View Full Version : Thinking about a C17 Catcherman

for a upland bird cleaning knife. Anyone have any thoughts on this? It looks like it would fit the requirements, if I could find a CE, all the better. I do like a flexible blade for this chore because I breast out smaller birds.
How about the blade steel? MBS-26? The steel chart confuses me to no end, MBS-26, doesn't look that close to H-1 which I think would be perfect for this but maybe H-1 can't be manufactured into a flexible blade.
Good or bad idea on this?

My Dear Friend,
I believe that all of the Catcherman knives are CE, 75/25 PE/SE. I have a Santoku in MBS-26; you will not find a better blade steel for this application.
I will wish you good luck in your fall hunt; more importantly I will wish you good skill. :D

The Catcherman far exceeded my expectations. Not only is it a great fillet knife but also very handy in the kitchen and for any food prep jobs. The serrations make short work of the biggest bones in fish and the MBS26 blade takes and keeps a great edge for much longer than the H1 PE Salt 1 I have. It is a great knife. Get it you won't regret buying the Catcherman. It is one of the best purchases I have made in 05.

Few people here in Spyderville even know that there was for a time an AUS-8 fully serrated Catcherman in production. I have 3 of them. One of them with a Yellow handle that has made it to the "Sacred Cow" part of my collection. There was a fully serrated Catcherman that went a week ago last Saturday on Ebay.
That fully serrated Catcherman is a jewell for cleaning fish and game both. Now Doctor Lecter is right about the newer MBS-26 75/25 version being a great knife. The newer blade steel is a real performer for sure. The Catcherman is a permanent fixture in my workshop, tackle box, kitchen drawer and whereever else I need a slendor blade. But do try the Fully Serrated one. It was completely overlooked. I only know of 2 collectors that knew they existed. JD :spyder: O

"I have 3 of them." Between that & all your dyads & hawkbills...if this were Busseville, you Sir, would be called a HOG! :D

I have a FS black handled Catcherman in AUS8 that I routinely use to cross-section my salmon into 2 1/2 to 3 inch steaks that I then fillet using non-Spydie blades. (Where is that fillet knife we saw in proto?)
Here is a pic of the yellow FS C17

I have heard a RUMOR that the Catcherman is now discontinued  . IF so are they coming out with a newer, better fillet knife? The Catcherman is an icon of the Great Spyder Factory but I don't feel like it ever got it's due respect. What's the scoop. I bet you know don't you Chad :D

I heard the same thing thats why I'm pretty sure I'm going to get a couple, one to put in the game bag and the other to "keep".

I've heard it as well. But then again, I'm not the most reliable source, because I can never remember where I heard things ;)

It was posted here on the Forum about the Catcherman being discontinued. It was even about a month ago. I think it was either Ms. Joyce or TazKristi I forget which.
But what I want to know is what are they going to replace it with  ? Their drawing board must really be getting full now  . I wish they would do a fixed blade fillet knife with a first class sheath.
