If your main purpose is defense, go for the Matriarch or if it is of legal length, the Civilian. If you want a more utility/defense oriented knife, go for the Harpy.

In no way do I wish to discourage you from purchasing a Spyderco. However, from the choices you suggest, one can't help but think you are interested in an effective self-defense knife.
In either the Custom Knives or Shop Talk forums at Blade Forums, Jens Anso, of Denmark, I believe, has just posted pictures of a knife he named the "Talon". It is the most wicked looking knife I've ever seen. Am sure it is more expensive than either of the Spydercos, so it may well be out of your range. After seeing it, I can't help but recommend that folks interested in pure self-defense take a gander at it.
As I understand it, the only significant difference between the Civilian and the Matriarch is the handle material. As a long-time believer in Kydex/FRN, I'd suggest you go for the less expensive Matriarch, and buy another knife with the money you save.
Happy choosing!

Sorry. Couldn't remember if this software converted URLs to links automatically or not. Guess you have to copy it and paste it into browser address bar.

I donno about that stare, its a beutifully crafed lill blade, but personally if some1 had to come at me with that or a serrated Civie, the civie would make me soil my pants, lol.
I reckon you cant get more wicked looking than a fully serated Civilian with that loooooooooooooooooooonnnnnng curve on the tip.
Im actually thinking of purchasing another Civilian,I love my Matriarch for carry, but the "wickedness/ugliness" of the Civ has its own beuty, it almost says, "play with me and see what you get/or what you lose, lol"
But yeah, hope spyderco doesnt ever change the design of the civ/mat, that shape is luuuuuvvvvvvvvvverly *drooooool*

If you want it only for self defense, out of those Id personally pick the Civilian if you have the spare cash for it, if its a all around util/self defense blade, Chinook is the one, beutiful blade, solid as they come and it makes razors seem blunt.
My fav spyderco I own is my plainedge Chinook, a work of art.
