My sharpmaker really isn't that great at restoring a damaged edge. It does fantastic at maintenance work and minor edge repair - but not so good on heavy repair work. So I've got a Lansky. My question is - the angles on Lansky systems aren't the same as on the Sharpmaker. I'm putting a new edge on my Delica VG-10, and it looks like the 25 degree setting on the Lansky is closest to the factory angle. Does this make sense? I thought Spyderco did 15 degrees per side for a 30 degree total. Does the Lansky 25 degree setting mean 25 total, or 25 per side?

I'm confused.

BTW - I'm getting my next Spydie in the mail tomorrow. A Manix, plain edge. I'm giddy with joy.

That would be 25 total.

A good way to check this is to set up your Sharpmaker, then hold the Lansky (with the knife clamped in place) up to the Sharpmaker. This method can tell you for sure if you are at 40 degrees inclusive. One of the things about the Lansky is that the angle can be “different” depending on where you clamp the rod guide onto the blade of your knife. This can also be affected by the width of the blade. If you have both systems, it doesn’t hurt to use them both to check for proper angle.

A 2" x 6" medium or course DMT diamond stone will do great edge work.

I have a Lansky but rarely use it. When I do I tape the blade to avoid scratches and on large or curved knives I have to reposition. The Sharpmaker is easier for touchups like you said.

The Lansky at 25 degrees inclusive would probably work letting you do the final sharpening at 30 degrees with the Sharpmaker.

I have to respectfully disagree with rycen on the inclusive angle. I held my Lansky clamp up to the Sharpmaker, and the 20 degree hole on the Lansky lines up perfetc with the rod set at 40 degrees, so I think the "20" degree setting on the Lansky isn't inclusive, but instead 40 degrees inclusive.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'll go with the 25 setting. It does seem to match the sharpmaker 30 fairly well. The Lansky doesn't seem to do the "finishing touch" quite like the sharpmaker does.

Like an idiot - I was setting the guide rod all the way into the stone. Next time I'll read the directions. :D

???

So with 18 degrees being the lowest you can go on a Lansky... then 36 degrees is the sharpest edge you can obtain?

Damned if I didn't measure it with a protractor and found out that it is NOT inclusive.

The lowest setting of 18 degrees gives you 36 degrees inclusive.

I guess I'd have to set the guide rods deeper into the stones and use a protractor to line them up with what angle I want. How much does THAT suck?

That is a drawback of the Lansky. It doesn't allow for a 30(-) degree angle :( . That may be why people recommend the Edge Pro, but I don't know anything about those.

Still, like I said when I used all six stones on the Lansky at 40 degree inclusive, my PE Crossbill got sharper then my CE Crossbill on the Sharpmaker at 30 degrees inclusive. Of course, the Lansky took a lot longer.
