View Full Version : Q about original D'Allaras

Just got a LNIB D'Allara that appears to be from an early run. Three things I noticed:

The newer ones have the flat spot on the scales to prevent chewed-up pockets. Good move.

The newer ones appear to have a completely pointy point, whereas my older one has a slightly rounded point--probably as a safety thing.

Not sure if this is a difference, but on my older one, the little T-shaped piece behind the ball bearing appears to be plastic. Can anyone confirm this? I would expect it to be metal, like on the Dodo.

I'll do a review after a little while, but I can say right now that this is probably the single best value in the knife world. Spyderco could charge $20 more and it would still be a deal. Or they could add $10 worth of G10 and finish time and charge twice as much as they do. But I understand and agree with the idea of using FRN on this knife. It is a Griptilian-beater for sure.

I can't be the only fan of this amazing knife--right?

I only have one of these so I have no point of comparison. It would help if you posted side-by-side photos of these knives. I did get to hold a proto drop-point d'Allara at Blade. The handle had several improvements. These are indeed robust knives!

I never really like the D'Allara for a few reasons. I thought that it was just a little too bulky for every day carry. The blade was just a little wider than I like. Like Spyderkknut I never ever saw an early prototype so I can't compare the 2 you are referring to.

I recommend you try the Assist I with the carbide glassbreaker. I find it is far and above the very best "rescue" type knife that the Great Spyder Factory has put out so far. GOOD LUCK :spyder:

You stold the words right out my mouth. When I EDC'd mine, I felt like I had a TV remote in my pocket.. :D Plus, no PE..

The new one will be a little slimmer with easier access for your thumb to actuate the ball. I do like this knife and can't wait for the drop point. It looked like a lower-priced Manix-tank with a ball lock.
