My Byrd Byo9BKPS Crow arrived today. I won't get technical, that's been done, so I'll just give my impressions. Fit and finish, pretty damn near perfect. No blems, scuffs, or allignment issues. Open/closing motion, glass smooth. As mentioned before, the blade is very sharp. The handle fits all the fingers on my big, fat hand and I have two positions to choose. I can grasp the entire handle for basic cutting or put my index finger on the serrated Manix style cutout up under the blade for precission cutting and more control. The opening hole is sharp and crisp, the way I like it. Speaking of handles, the design on them is cool. I first thought it was something like a petrified fish fossel but looking again I suppose it's more like a birds (or Byrds) feather. Cleaver I think. This is a cool knife and really does blow away the concept of "entry level" knife.
Now, being a box and packaging freak, get rid of that cheap insert slider inside the box, spend a few cents more, and put a nicer, more heavy duty slider inside. That's my only negative comment.
Thanks Spyderco. A super nice knife I'm very happy to own.

Congratulations greencobra.
Is this your first byrd?
I'd be nice to have a slider comparable in quality to the Spyderco boxes, but just so you'll know, these boxes are a drastic improvement over the old byrd boxes. They were jus a plain, white box, with the sku sticker plastered on the face. They'd get crushed during shipping, and looked bland. No slider either. Your right though. These boxes would be awesome if they were the same quality of the :spyder: boxes.
I also think its such a testement to the quality of these knives that the worst you can say is that it needs a better box.

Thank you, and to you also.
Yes, it's my first Byrd and you can tell, I'm impressed. I wasn't expecting the first class box it came in, a happy bonus, nice grapics, and yes, a SKU sticker.
I forgot to mention, mine is a 50/50 Combo Edge which again I'm happy about that too because I don't own one of those. I will edc it soon and I'm sure it works as good as it looks.

greencobra,
I meant to ask. Is the lock ramp on your Crow coated like the blade?

My inexperience is gonna show, what exactly is a lock ramp? :o
If it's what the lock rests on when open, yes.

I may not have termed it properly, but that's what I'm talking about. DAYWALKER said his are uncoated, while my Raven was coated (most of it has worn off by now).
Thanks for your reply. I can't wait untill they are available. Any chance of in-hand pics?

Sure, I'll try. Results may vary, my camera is a 2 MP number, high tech 4 years ago but lost in the dust now. Tomorrow I'll see what I can do.

greencobra,
Do you think you could keep an eye on the performance of the lock as to the travel on the ramp(?). Once the coating started to wear off of mine, the lock bar started traveling further on the ramp. Just curious.

Oh, too easy. I can do that, not a problem.

Aloha GC!
Congrats on your prize! Wasn't the box a blast!?! :D
Enjoy your prize, and BTW, what Byrd is pictured on your box? Is it a pic of your Crow? Look carefully now...
God bless and congrats on "the other thing" ;)

Thanks greencobra, they give me a good idea of how it might work out. Looks like it might be close to size of the Caly Jr. but 1/8 inch shorter and a bit thicker.
BTW: Did you check the box like DAYWALKER mentioned? My Raven box has a pic of the Crow on it, and his have Crow boxes have pics of the Raven on them. . We were wondering what yours has.

I don't know what's on the box frankly, looks like something prehistoric. If it's a crow the artist should be looking for work soon.
OK, I'm with the program now. I thought you meant the box art. Yes, it does look like the crow thats on the box. Below that is written BY09 Crow and below that 2 check boxes, one for Plain Edge, the other for Plain/Serrated Edge and of course that's the one checked off. Sorry for the confusion.

Not the artwork, the pic of the knife towards the bottom of the box.

Whoa, let me try this again. What a morning so far.
No, it's not a Crow but the Raven that's pictured on the box. I had to confirm with the pic in the catalog section so I'm sure on this. :o
That is a very cool and utilitarian looking knife!! I like it!
How much do they go for?

I think in the Catalog portion of this site, it's listed at $29, the crow that is. Not sure about the rest of the line.
