After seeing all sorts of suggestions on improvements roaming around here, I thought it might be kind of fun for each of us to pick up our favorite Spydie and move to fantasy land- that distant place where any changes you would make could be done. (Of course, my intention is not for this to be a place to beg Spyderco for sprint runs or changes, just a place to share our thoughts on our favorite tools)

Personally, my favorite for 90% of the time is my FRN Dragonfly. What would I do with it? I think it'd be kind of classy with black linen micarta and higher grade steel- like VG-10. Alternatively, fish-scale FRN handles and ATS-55 would be pretty neat. A reversible (left/right) clip would be great, too! (I have a couple of left-handed friends who'd buy a left-handed Dragonfly).

So, what would all of you do with your favorite knife if you could change things about it?

PS: Hopefully Sal doesn't ban me from the forums for starting a "wish list" thread!

OK, my favorite knife to modify a bit would be the Chinook. I really like the design, but I think a few changes would make a great knife a spectacular one.
1.) Tip-up carry. It's annoying for someone who always uses tip-up to suddenly have a tip-down knife in the arsenal, as the strategy for use is very different.

2.) A bit longer blade, with handle to match. Since the Chinook functions well as a field knife, this would only enhance its functionality.

3.) The most difficult thing I like for the Chinook to have, a bone or stag handle. I like natural grips for most things, and I believe this could go a long way towards giving the Chin legitimacy with those not completely comfortable with the knife.

While these changes would make the Chinook more a field knife than a self-defense knife, I believe that these options would sell well and provide another aspect to Spyderco's reputation.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

EDC:
Cricket
-green g-10 handle
-vg-10 blade
-3.5" blade, but keep the dimensions. The matriarch/Civ line is too thin for EDC, because the tips break...
This would make it the perfect EDC

Camp:
Wegner:
-Camo print on g-10
-440V or vg-10
This is already a great knife, and steel type would be the only real change I'd do.

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

Michael,
Your "fantasy land" Dragonfly sounds to me like a Calypso Jr. Jr. Where do I order?

I agree with the changes mentioned for the chinook. The only thing i would add to it would be either a Carson flipper, like on the CRKT M16, or an Emerson wave. I particularly like the way the wave opens the blade when removed from the pocket. I'm sure Sal could come up with his own version. I would also make the clip reversible for left hand carry. I would love to carry two Chinook's.

shootist16, Dennis, posted a picture of my ideal knife on Blade Forums, somewhere. It is a titanium-handled Wegner, that was changed into a frame lock. Unbelievable! I'd cheerfully pay in the $200 or $250 range for such a fantastic knife.

My other favorite, the Native FRN -- I once understood that it had changed the FRN grip to match the one on the Calypso Jr. Ltwt. I was wrong. That is the only change I'd like to see made to it. It is damn near perfect as is!
