From the appearance of the clips on my Dyad and Native, which were purchased used, I would guess that they're just painted. I don't think the teflon coating say CRKT uses would wear off in the same way the clips on my 2 used Spydies has.
But, my ignorance about the subject and pain is pretty profound. Hopefully, someone who for sure knows what they're talking about will give you a definitive answer. Good luck.

My carry Matriarch's clip started losing some of the coating (not much but it wasnt looking good) so I thought "noooo ways", last night I decided to remove the coating and buff it up to a nice shine.
MAN!!! what a job!!!!!!!, that stuff just wont come off.
I tried heating it off with 1 of em hot paint remover blowers, no ways, lol, didnt work.
I went as far as to carefully heat it with a small hobby blowtorch (at distance), no go on that.
Tried paint stripper, no go on that, lol
Finally a got some good ol sand paper, got most of it off (nearly down to the metal), then polished the rest off with a waterstone.
It was alot of work, I thought it would just come on off, but yeah, lol
The clip is all shined up and polished now and I must say it looks damn good.
I like the Matriarch far better with the shiney clip, will go nicely with my Gunting when it arrives *Grin*
Seeya guys, I donno what Sal uses on those clips, but its darn tough

hmm... the clip on my native is shiny... i could have gotten a dark, nonreflective one? i'd have liked that better. (also, a way to blacken and matte out the blade too)
oh well. i haven't had these knives 12 hours and i'm still looking for stuff to cut... i don't think theres a box or newspaper left in the house that doesn't have my effect on it <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Hawkins, I got a black clip on my Native, but have seen ones with shiney clips, to be honest I was hoping to get a shiney clip, I think it goes well with the blade and the black FRN.

We've tried a number of coatings, and we're always trying new ones. Keeping in mind that we have found no permanent coatings (assuming use), the coatings that we are currently using on our clips is one of the better ones.

Thanks Sal.
So I'm guessing this is a coating that can't be redone at home.Never mind I'll polish it instead.

To keep this thread going, I have a Benchmade Mini Stryker. The clip appears to be "parkerized" or "gun metal blued". I have carried and used this knife many times. I am wondering if anyone else knows what this is? Also, has Spyderco ever considered this approach?

To make the black clips really nice looking, one can use a Green ScotchBrite pad. After a while, the black does come off, leaving a satin finished clip with the black Spider outline. For those who want even more "nicety," use 600 to 1000 grit sandpaper and adjust the "shine" to taste. The bug will stay black with a little care.
