Aloha ALL,

Okay, I won a Raven, Crow, and Pelican from the byrd Slogan contest. Initially I received the Pelican, but got two Crows! :p No big deal, but the Forum Goddess Tazkristi sent me a PE Raven, which arrived this afternoon. Mahalo much Kristi! ;)

Oddly enough, my Raven arrived in a byrd box depicting a Crow model on it. I already brought this to The Marketing Goddess' (Joyce) attention to avoid headaches and she said that they were already aware of the Raven/Crow "mix up" on the byrd boxes. :p

Upon opening I noticed it was very smooth. In fact a bit too smooth for my taste. I will tighten her up a bit. Of course the handle filled the hand very well due to it's width. Blade was pretty sharp, love them fine texture grooves! Then I noticed "it"...

Corrosion. The blade was pitted under the black coating and the liners had rust spots here and there. I used some Mother's Polish and got the spots off the liners, but the blade I could not help being that the rust appears to have formed under the nice flat black finish. Memories of CRKT knives I had here! The Crow fits my hand better, but I will be using this Raven to test out this byrd line. Why?

The rust on the blade, the rust on the liners...it's gonna happen eventually anyway with use here in Hawaii. Also the liner lock. It engages in different areas all the time, and is almost touching the other liner at times, missing it by about 1/16". Will it fail under normal use? Doubtful, but we'll see. The CE Crow got a good cleaning and back into the box it went. The Raven will get it's pivot tightened a bit and carried under the supervision of my C83. ;) Due to the rust, it's primed and ready for Hawaii use! :D

NOTE: Special pic for ghostrider. As you can see, the place on my Raven's blade where the linerlock engages is NOT coated.

Mahalo for reading and again, a BIG mahalo much to our Forum Goddess: Tazkristi! :)

God bless

Wow! DAYWLAKER. Can't believe the pitting on that blade  . Too bad that.
I'm experiencing some of the "lock travel" your getting, but not as bad, and I thought it was because of the coating wearing off the lock ramp. greencobra said that the lock ramp on his Crow was coated. Interesting...

Thanks for the updatd and pics. Looking forward to your report.

You say the Crow fits your hand better. Can you explain? Any chance of some in hand pics of the Crow? Time and light permiting, of course.

Aloha ghostrider!

Yeah, I couldn't believe it myself! No way for me to remove it either unless I lose the coat! No biggee...the Raven is now my user/tester because of that awful brown four letter word! :D

Ooh...lemme see if I got any in hand pics with the Crow, as light is no more right now in Hawaii bro! Dark and raining hard, it is. Uh...okay, you see the Crow handle has a pinky divot and is generally "fatter" in that area than the Raven. I guess those features of the Crow cause it to fit my hand like a glove. A plus on the Raven is that I can hold it in every grip except reverse edge in. I can just barely hold it well in that position. I'll try to take some pics later for ya.

Both this Raven and my Crows are not coated in the area of "engagement" with the liner lock.

Mahalo for reading and God bless

Aloha Chad, glad you finally got a Raven but sad to hear that the overseas flight across the Pacific caused some R**T! Hope you give the Raven a good Soda Can Test! ;) H1 rules in HI! But how about that H1 steel? I'm pretty impressed so far with my Salt pe...I've sharpened it a coupla times on the Sharpmaker at 30 degrees....quite the slicer even tho it's hollow ground instead of flat! :) Take care and thanks for posting this thread. :spyder:

Aloha jaislandboy!

I gotta agree with you about H1. It totally proved it's "worth" to me when I used my Pacific PE on Oahu.

Anyway, no soda test on the Raven...I dunno if I could pull it off! :o

God bless and H1 rulez  Thanks for reading :)

Aloha ghostrider,

I figure you'd chime in later, so i simply took some pics in the room. I don't know what the pics will say, but IMHO, the Crow fits like a glove while the Raven simply "fits". Hey...why is it that for some odd reason I feel like I am holding an R2 when I hold the Raven? :p

I also posted a pic of the Raven/Crow mix up on the boxes, and one with my Persian to show how big this Raven is.

God bless

Thanks DAYWALKER. Wow! Those pics make the Raven look huge. I thought the Persian was supposed to be a big knife.

I guess I never thought of the Raven as a large knife because it doesn't feel unwieldly in my hand. I knew the dimensions were definitely bigger than that of something like the Delica, but it is smaller than the Pelican , and it is dwarfed by the Cara Cara. I kept looking at the Saber Grip pic and thinking that the pic makes the knife look bigger than I think it is. Then I went and compared it to my in-hand pics and I think I now understand why. My thinking is biased. Kinda funny because the Raven fits my hand like a glove, yet it doesn't sound like it's larger size is too much of a problem for you. I've noticed that many of the Glessers' designed knives can work for larger hands, while accomodating smaller hands at the same time.

Not real sure about your reference the the "R" since I've never handled one (unless your talking about the over/under jimmping). Deacon and I both thought it looked like it might feel somewhat like the Stretch based on appearences.

Thanks for posting those pics. Every day I learn something new. ;)

The Raven and R2 are quite similar in size, the R2 is on the Southbeach diet though. So much slimmer than the Raven. Chad, it looks like we have an almost identical hand size! That's just how the Raven fits my hand as well, lol! :D The handle of the Raven is IMO most similar to the Stretch, but again the Raven is thicker.

I hope you are not too disappointed with your Raven DayWalker. It must be great to win those knives.

Very Nice Chad!

I have been enjoying my Crow... The Raven is just a bit big for my small hands. :)

Chad,
The "rusting" you mention, is it on the edge? If not, it's not actually rusting. It's an imperfection in the black coating (nothing to worry about though). Let me know if it is on the edge.

Take care!

Kristi

Aloha ghostrider,

Yes, the Raven is a pretty big knife...bigger than I thought it was gonna be! No "camera tricks" though. In some ways, the Raven is bigger than the C83.

LOL, I tell ya, that is NO easy feat...to make a knife handle fit almost everyone regardless of handsize. I hate it when I ProtoPlastic one of my designs, bring it to work, and then a staff member with big hands just makes it disappear. :o

In reference to the R2, yeah, it was the texturing and the back 2/3rds of the blade. However, in terms of "lines", it does resemble the Stretch a lot, and The mighty Deacon would know about that!

God bless :)

Aloha redhawk44p,

Disappointed? FAR from it. A bit o' rust is something ya get used to living in the Islands! :D

Yes, it is an honor to have won these *fine* knives...still hasn't truly registered yet!

Ahhhhh, speak of the Tasmanian Devil! :p

Taz, there was rust on the liners, the pivot screw, and the blade. Yes, there was some on the edge also. You can kinda see it on the pics I took in my initial post. Either way, no big deal! I got all the rust off the mentioned areas except on the blade coat.

Mahalo much once again Mrs. Hunter! This raven model will "represent" well...

God bless :)

I left my Raven for few days in the jacket pocket and when took it out noticed few new ones (in addition to the ones it came with) rusty spots, this time on the blade itself.

Have anyone figured the best way to get rid of those?

Very interesting thread. I am wondering why you don't return the rusted knife. Am I missing something here?...... Just wondering.
I have a Raven also which I really like a lot. Had some problems with the clip screws but overall I like the weight, feel and lock of the blade. I think it is a super knife for the $$ providing you don't get a rusted one.... :~)
