just a quick question

Does anyone know of a way to treat/coat an ats55 delica blade so it is a non reflecting black without screwing up the steel?

Use a black "Sharpie" marker, and color it in. It will last a little while.

A little alcohol will take that sharpie right off of your blade also.... ("permanent" is a relative term, apparently)

wouldn't that just make it black, but not do anything about it being reflective?

i think he was referring to the black/grey powder coat a lot of tacknives have.

but, if thats the only thing one can do, i might just try it- especially if its so easily undone by a bit of alcohol <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

I actually was referring to something dark and nonreflective. I had tried the sharpie before, but I decided to give it another chance and it looked like crap but did come off with alchohol.

Places like Brownell's sell a spray-on flat black enamel coating. It is nowhere near as robust as the black coats many manufacturers are putting on these days, it goes on kind of thick and can be a bit brittle especially around the corners, so I'm not sure I'd recommend it, but if you're in an experimental mood you might try it out. I blacked out a pocket clip with this stuff. I remember having to bake the clip in an oven after I sprayed it, but as I recall the temperature was 350 degrees or under -- you should check with Spyderco, but that shouldn't be anywhere near hot enough to affect the blade's temper.
