Does anyone here use the Maddox much? I bought one when they first went on clearance and have to admit that it has not seen a lot of use. The design is pretty good and the blade cover is genius but I just like classic kitchen knives more. What do you all think?

For someone who doesn't need it, the Maddox configuration might seem awkward. However, for someone who only has the use of one hand, the Maddox is genius. I have a brother-in-law who has very limited use of one hand. I used to watch him struggle to use a regular knife and keep his food on the plate. I bought him a Maddox and he loves it. He carrys it in his pocket whenever he goes out for dinner now.
The Maddox is an example of form following function. It is designed for a specific purpose and it fulfills that purpose extremely well.

Just saw this thread and had to say that 4 s ster did a "good deed" to help your brother-in law. Tell him that I am really pleased that it is helping him. I called this the "helper-cutter" in the beginning but Sal wanted to name it the Maddox. and , well, he is the boss,,, actually he was right. Yes it is a helper cutter but the secret is that it can out cut most knives and be very usefull to the rest of us folks with two good working hands. So we didnt want to limit peoples thinking on this knive with a more limited name.
Spyderco did a guttsy move with this knife. Not too many folks out there willing to make something to help folks with some physical diabilities.
I have calls and letters from folks that this knife has literally changed their lives for the better. and . That is the best "pay" that I could hope to recieve. Best wishes to you all and keep doing good deeds.

My girlfriend teaches kids with disabilities. I dragged her to the SFO sale one day, and I tried to get her interested by showing her the Maddox, figuring she might find a use for it with some of her kids.
She recognized it immediately and said, "I know that kind of knife. My kids use it all the time." So it's the real deal.

My best friend recently lost his arm and I would love to get him this knife as a gift. We went to the police academy together so he means the world to me and to be able and get him something where he doesn't have to depend on another to cut his meal all the time would be great. I know this knife is out of production but I was hoping, maybe some here maybe could help out and point me in the right direction.
I would love to be able to give him a piece of his pride back even if it is for a such a small thing as not asking his wife to cut his dinner and have people stare even more.
Thank you
Charlie

As someone who can't use their left arm I probably should of gotten one.
My go-to steak knife has been my SE ZDP-189 Delica. Granted if it is a good cut & cooked right I usually do just fine with their so-called steak knives.
The Maddox always did intrigue me though.

Joe Maddox found someone else to produce it and, given Sal's comments in this thread (http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47035), I don't think there will be a problem posting a link to where one can be purchased (http://indetools.com/tools.html).
FWIW, I have the use of both arms and have still found mine useful for mincing garlic, chives, and fresh herbs and it has also worked well for removing inspection, registration, and parking permit stickers from the inside of my windshield.

go to the site Paul linked to. countryknives.com are selling them for $75 compared to $34, unless of course you want it to say Spyderco on the knife.
