I've finally decided to purchase a military. I plan on using it as an every day carry. Should I choose plain or serrated? Which blade steel is the best to get? And does anyone know the most reasonable place to purchase one? Thanks for the help.

I'd recommend the CPM440V steel in plain edge, and you could check with shootist16/Dennis Bible. He sells knives, provides excellent service, and usually good prices.

I also like Bayou LaFourche. They're still putting together their web page, and don't yet list the Military. Still, I'd be very surprised if they didn't have it in stock. BF is usually at the bottom, price-wise, have excellent service, and use UPS ground for standard delivery, which isn't as speedy as priority mail with the USPS, which Dennis uses.

G'day Clay, how's your little'un?

I'd say to go for CPM440V. It seems to take a finer edge than ATS34, once you get the knack of sharpening it, and hold it longer. The trick seems to be to finish off with lots of very light strokes on the white rods, assuming of course that you're using a Sharpmaker .

Plain or serrated will depend om what you intend to use the knife for. I often use my Military for food preparation and so prefer a plain edge. OTOH if if you plan to use it in the garden, I've seen the serrated Military described as a pocket chainsaw. To each his own .

i only have the serrated and it is like clay says a "pocket chainsaw" though rope cardboard a bush whatever, one the nice thing that i love about the serraed blade it is almost like a 80/20? the non-serated tip is big enogh to do some good non-serraded taskes. i might get a plain edge one day. good luck

Thanks guys, I'll probably go with the CPM440V in the plain edge.

Clay the baby is doing fine, she's growing like a weed. How's your new addition?

That's good to hear Clay. My little bloke is also doing very well. Sleeps soundly and is happy when he's awake, what more can you ask .

Take care,

When,oh when will the Military come out in a 50/50 serrated format. If the choice existed i'd be interested on the uptake. Methinks alot of people would go for the dual blade type option.

Hi V34. I've been carrying one that our crew in mfg made for me. They said they thought it would be a good model to add. It has not presented any problems.

What do you think?

Hi Sal.
On the subject of testing, have you thought of testing prototypes in different climatic conditions ?? I would be more than willing to do the testing for constantly wet climates (UK), just send them on over ;-))

i like a large utilty 50/50 blade myself. i have a fully serated military but i'd get a 50/50 too. with a compression lock?

Folks,

I will soon be carrying a plain edge and a serrated model Military, once I get the serrated model. I guess it would be convenient to have both blade styles in one knife for some tasks.
