Here's one that's really off-topic! How many of you absolutely refuse to shop at Walmart? I find that alot of my money ends up going there, grocery department mainly. Someone took a census on another board, and it astonished me as to how many people say they don't and never will shop ye olde Walmart.

My Dear Friend,

When living in Snakenavel Wal-Mart is sometimes the only real choice unless one is willing to drive at least one additional hour round trip out of one's way. If I had any real choice, heaven knows I would exercise it...

My Dear Dr. Snubnose,

I like Wal-Mart...Clothes last for about a week!

I would rather buy from a yard sale.

LOL, Don't think I could ever buy food there

It doesn't generally qualify as food as I understand the definition of the term... ;)

...other than that they have some good prices on certain things.....

What good are great prices if the products suck?

The Walmarts in China are better then the ones here IMHO...Now there's a trip for you Doc :p ...Doc :D

China, hmmm? Alright, smart guy... :p

Don't remember ever being in a Wal-Mart, sounds like I should not go out of the way to get to one. Target is my store of choice. :o

I'm not a big fan of Wal-Mart. Like greencobra I tend to find myself in Target, my girlfriend loves it there.

The first wal mart supercenter was built in my town. Sadly, we get most of our food there. Reasors has much better food, better deli, and a real butcher. But it's 40 miles away. There are smaller grocery stores in our town, but they don't clean them very well.

The only things I would like to buy at another store are meat and fresh veggies.

I don't buy clothes at wal mart, but I buy fishing tackle, shotgun and .22 ammo there. 15 bucks for 100 shotgun shells is a hell of a deal. 3 bucks for 90 clays. I think it's amazing that such a huge store still sells guns.

I've never had a problem with wal mart's customer service. They take everything back no questions asked. I've seen people take bbq grills back that look like they were ran over by a pickup truck.

I've been to wal marts headquarter in Arkansas and I've been to the first wal mart. Sam Walton was a humble man. He was a billionaire and he still drove an older ford pick up truck. You always hear about wal mart treating it's employees bad, but any full time employee gets health benifits, dental, 10 percent off everything in the store, and they used to get stock options, I'm not sure of that any more.

The meats really aren't all that bad. You can pretty good steaks(at least they are after I'm through with them) at a reasonable price. What I do not like to buy is produce. The quality is very inconsistent, and they have such a high product turnover that they do not bother to rotate stock. As far as name brand goods go, I have no problem shopping Walmart.

Just like anywhere else, you just have to shop with your best consumer hat on...many things will be cheaper...and act like it under normal use...some things will be of good quality for less, and of course some things will be more than elsewhere, especially if you want a high quality item, your chances of finding it in Walmart are less. Often DVDs on release week are a great deal at Walmart (good luck trying to return an opened DVD :p ). Thankfully they still support gun rights and sell the same.

I have about ten each, long and short sleeves, so each gets worn at least once every two weeks for six months out of the year. They range in age from five years to a few weeks. Have had a button or two fall off, but other than that no problems. Ditto on jeans. Faded Glory may not last as well as "the best out there" but they last a decent while for the price and Levis and Wranglers are the same whereever you buy them. Aside from clothes, I don't buy much there - DVDs, and curio cabinets to display my knives in are about it. :D

I do not,my wife does.
We were in one for 3 hours last week and it was all I could do the find 11.00 worth of stuff to buy.

I don't really buy that many clothes there, just under-stuff, socks and such. I do get alot of good deals on video games there. I don't know how it is in the rest of the world, but we have TEN Walmarts within a 30 mile radius! Kinda like we don't have much of a choice. Has anybody ever been to a Sam's club warehouse? You can get really good deals on bulk items there, and they have a quite decent stock of clothing. As far as groceries go, the best we have around here is a Fresh Market, which I frequent as well. A local butcher gets our business too.

I'm the kind that not only buy a product, but also a service... Yes, I bought at wall-Mart in the past, but since then, they closed 2 stores in Quebec under false reason ("We were not making anough money" ...The store was open for less than a year. ) because the employees wanted to unionized. The Quebec court even proved the company was wrong and the closing "kind of" illegal ... Anyway... We used to buy there a lot of things but not anymore. I'd rather asked a small store owner if they would take something back in two weeks if I'm not satisfied than go there...

And here, we have Canadian Tire...Very good price. Bought a Dremel for less than 30.00$ a while ago (70% off). They would take a box full of crap after one year as long as you have the receipt.
They even refunded a toaster that died after 6 months. No box, but I had the receipt :D ... And employees are happy...

It's me again... I don't know about other Wall-Marde( :D ), but I used to not really like shopping there because customers were allways rude and didn't care if they block your way... It was the only large surface store where I noticed that... Is that the same everywhere... Do they have a motto like "be rude and crude at Wall-Mart"...???

The term "predatory capitalism" fits wal-mart like a glove. IF Sam Walton the company's original founder and visionary knew the direction his store has taken he would be puking in his grave. Sam tried his hardest to stock the shelves with Made in the U.S.A. products and really treated the consumer with respect. But this new leadership has made the store nothing but a garage sale outlet for Red China.

The store who I dis-respectfully refer to as "rip-mart" should actually put that on their signs. They get rich by selling the same item over and over again. The quality of this junk made by poor Chinese slaves is deplorable at best. The stuff wears out quickly so therefore you just simply buy the same item over and over again. :(

The big trick of rip-mart is to go into these small to medium sized rural towns and set up shop. They first price their items so low that the consumers first regard them as "heaven sent" only to find out that they came there to put every "mom & pop" business bankrupt and then suck every consumer dollar out of the poor town  . AS Doctor Lecter says in some cases you just simply don't have any choice but to buy your stuff at wal-mart because they are simply the only choice in some areas. That is all by design. Nothing else needs to be said at this time. :(

I wish we had Target stores here. My wife and I do shop at Walmart but selectively. Very little food from there - usually Safeways or Co-op for us. I think this is like shopping for anything else - there can be bargains to be had - tough to beat those $6.88 DVD's if you like the older movies :) We have these stores called Superstore in Calgary - they are actually cheaper than Walmart on new release DVD's. If you buy food in larger quantities - pretty hard to beat. We also have Costco here. I'm personally not a big fan of Costco, for instance - if I have shop there on a weekend. The price saving, to me, is not worth the difference in waiting in the FOREVER line-ups that occur there. Yes, Walmarts can be busy but nothing like Costco on a weekend or noon hour  Superstores are the same - OK during the week, but not weekends. A bit of my money goes to Walmart but then again, it's a convenience thing for me. If it's handy and they have something I need, fine. I've purchased a couple of Garrity LED flashlites there - couldn't find them anywhere else. If I need that something and I'm closer somewhere else - fine. If I'm looking for something very specific and Walmart has it, then sometimes a bit of comparing falls into the equation. Sometimes Walmart wins, sometimes it doesn't.

Pretty much happens at all the big chains I think. I returned a defective cordless drill to a major home do-it-yourself chain store. I watched as the clerk put my returned one back in stock and grabbed another for me. I once bought a gallon tub of Spackle at the same place, opened it, and 1/4 of it was already used. Holy smokes, we're really going to hell.

Doc,

The story about Target being owned by the French is nothing but an internet rumor. The company is still American owned and based in Minneapolis. I'm not sure what difference it would make in the first place. And as far as not allowing the Salvation Army to stand outside collecting money, that was a reaction to guest feedback. Target had actually been making an exception to its policy just for the Salvation Army. Then they found out doing so was illegal, since they would have to allow other organizations solicit on their property as well. Since Target wants to provide a distraction free shopping experience for the people that shop there, the SA had to go.

The only time I go to Wal-Mart is when I have to buy ammunition. Even then I try to get in and out as quickly as possible. I'm not sure I'd want to even shop their produce section, because every time I've been in there, it smells like a garbage dumpster. After watching the employees that were working the deli section, I'd be worried to try any meats or seafoods that came from behind the counter. Another thing that bugs me about Wal-Mart is that all the stores in my area are almost always dirty. I guess that comes from being open 24 hours a day, they never really have a chance to clean the place. I feel like I need to take a shower whenever I come out of the place.

I have agree with you here Deacon. Especially about the availability of big mens clothing. I can't afford to pay the big & tall store prices as I'm college student with a part time job and Wal-Mart has a good selection at decent prices and they last as long as I need them to.
