That's absolutely ourtageous.
How do they substantiate their demand for such sum of money?

I have had problems with UPS too. Nothing like yours, like Vincent said "Thats insane". I will NOT for ever, forever ever, forever ever, use UPS again.

psimonl,
Sorry to learn of your unpleasant situation. :( This is sadly just another article in my justification for never using UPS whenever another shipping option is available. If not, I shop elsewhere or do without. UPS for Canadians is the most aggravating courier service imaginable and they will not get one more cent out of me if I have anything to do with it. There is no end to the stories I have heard and few experiences I have had with them that I am not surprized that your situation has occurred with them. There are enough cost effective solutions with better or equal service to support my decision. Some companies seem to shun the post office, but I have had good experiences and good service for reasonable fees. Please let us know how it turns out for you, hoping for the best.

Dearest Simon,
My sincerest condolences for the lack of consideration visited upon you by the United Parcel Service. They are never my first shipping choice either.

UPS is the worst courier service ever, in terms of quality of service and customs fees... I'm really afraid of what I'm gonna have to pay for my forum Adventura.
Spyderco would do a big favor to its customers if they stopped using UPS... at least for worldwide shipping. USPS Global Priority or Express Mail is way better!

Unfortunately, we haven't had any luck (in fact it was worse) using USPS in any form of service. Tracking was very inconsistent and unfortunately, there were numerous packages that went missing (and never found).
We're always looking at other options. We are considering one now, but we have a few tests of our own to put them through first.
We have found though, just like all things commercial if one looks in the "right" place, you can always find challenges. No one is perfect.
We'll keep you updated though if we find another source for shipping.

About a year ago I did a knife trade with a lady up in the Ontario province in Canada. I used UPS because the knives had about a $300 value and I wanted to insure that they at least got there. They did get there all right. But like Simon experienced she got a Customs invoice for $202. Now I believe that is Canadian dollars but that is still a total outrage. Like Simon experienced: That is 2 thirds of the value of the merchandise. Since then I have been very reluctant to send anything overseas or to Canada. I sent a Spyderco knife to a Forum brother here recently to England through the Post Office of all things and it did much better than UPS.
I wonder if Fed Ex would maybe be a better option? What have you all decided?
What's ridiculous and totally corrupt about this is that I thought the NAFTA agreement was supposed to open up trade with Mexico & Canada with the USA. Gosh  do you think we were lied to again  .

It's not really fair to blame UPS, or the US Postal Sevice, for things that are the fault of laws in Canada and other countries. When a nation decides to tax private imports at absurdly high levels, that is their decision. At the very least, having made that decision, they should have a simple way for their citizens to return an item for repair or replacement and get it back without it being taxed yet again, but if no such procedure exists, once again, it is your goverment, not the carrier, that is picking your pocket.

With all due respect Paul,
I know exactly who has "picked my pockets" in the past. It is fair to blame UPS in some cases. When I order $200 worth of goods and use 2 different shipping options, one that costs me $25 total, and the same value of goods arrives with $25 of shipping plus $68 worth of brokerage, it is not the fault of the government (they have enough of their own :D ), it is the shipping firms fee structuring. If psimonl owned the goods and they have been serviced and coming back, I fail to see where the government enters the problem. I strongly doubt he is being asked to pay tax again as my last knife order was substantial and was not taxed, but rather shipped and handled quite well for reasonable fees, certainly not the $87 psimonl is being gouged.

my fist :spyder: 's order was a cara cara byrd for 29$ shipped by UPS. They send me a 27$ payment advise fot the customs and internal charges. i refused to pay their charges because i thought i paid enough with 25$ for the shipping. So i just paid the customs (helas...) because UPS is always controlled by the french customs (as Fedex with my Spyker but it is more clear  ).
The only customs free way is USPS with a low value notice of the flat enveloppe.
That's why i don't buy knives on Spyderco online store anymore (helas too... :( )

I know how it is, been there too. I received something from Spyderco once, everything was paid in advance and when the package arrived, they charged me (about 40$ IIRC, the story is already a couple years old) for "delays". I asked "what delays?" And the guy said "delays in our warehouse" When I asked why should I pay for their delays, the guy replied "I just work here, they told me to charge you this amount of money, this is all"

I always get items sent from the US to come via USPS Global Proirity Mail. It is cheap, insurable, trackable and I only get charged canadian taxes on the price I paid plus a 5 dollar handling fee. Quite unlike the gouging that goes on at UPS. I could say a few words on why their trucks are brown, it reflects their crappy pricing.
I'm really sorry to hear of your UPS problem. I've had some problems with them too, but of a different nature than yours. I was out of luck. I hope you can find a resolution some way. God bless...

Just to finish this off...
A week ago, UPS send me a new bill with a "Pay the amount of 47.85$ RIGHT NOW"... (Capitals are from me...) dated around the 20th of November...
I called them up and they told me that it was strange because the file had been closed since November the 15th!!!
Odd, ain't it???
But you know what, I noticed at work that people pay bills without knowing what it is for. Like people who try to cash in sweepstakes fake check!!!
I think I will put up a business and send bills just to see how many companies and people pay
Anyway, I just wanted to end this thread with a final...

almost none of us gun dealers use UPS, FOR ANYTHING. they are like rabid antigunners, they charge outrageous rates on firearms.

It wasn't always thus...in the early 90s they used run a ton of guns...if they could keep their people from stealing 'em maybe they would still deliver guns at reasonable rates.

Yeah you could just have in normal print at the bottom of the paper asking for money...This is not a bill. ;)
