View Full Version : Will the police be switching over to the spyder-bug logo?

:spyder: instead of the word "police", like the military and para have done? If so I might be getting one. "police" stamped on the blade just seems a bit too aggressive and jury-spooking for me should the need arise to wield it rightiously for self-protection. Beautiful design, though. :spyder:

Hi there
as a commited Police-knut I would have to say that it would be a shame to fold to the sheeple completely. However there are a number of C07s that don't have POLICE or POLICE MODEL on the blade, and the late production knives seem to have it very lightly etched, buy one and have at it with a buffing wheel and some compound.
Phil
It's a shame when things have digressed to the point law-abiding people need worry about a word like "police" or "military" being printed on a blade; or that a company with a fine reputation feels it necessary to remove them.
The police model was the very first Spyderco model I'd ever seen (At least I think it was the "police".) It was the mid-80's and an officer whipped one out in patrol briefing and passed it around. It was big, heavy, and fully serrated. A lot of officers had them before long. I didn't get one and still don't have one... although it's on the list.
Our thought at the time was that knife was perfect for the utility applications we might face... cutting seatbelts, rope, etc., etc... no one said much about using them for defense, although it didn't need saying that we would if it was all we had left to keep our ticket from being punched. I'd use a 2 X 4 to defend myself with if that was all I had left. The main thing is to be right when you do it, and be able to articulate justification afterwards.
Most all of us carried a back-up gun anyway. When I see that word on the blade it brings to mind a stout cutting tool that might be utilized to slice heavy materials in a hurry. It could just as well say "firefighter", or EMT, etc.
In reality, police shoot people sometimes but I've never known one to cut anybody. I doubt the military cut many people either. Too bad that point can't be stressed during depositions, trials, etc. Most of us carry Glocks anymore... that doesn't mean private citizens shouldn't buy them too.
Yesterday, a grandmother shot a man who broke into her home in an effort to hide from police who'd been chasing him. I saw her on the news this AM... she told the reporter that "I told him I'd shoot him if he didn't get down... well, he didn't and she did. She's pretty popular around here today if the local talk shows and TV news are any indication.
We've had carry laws in Texas for years now. I like them and think every law-abiding adult should be able to go armed if they take it seriously. There ought to be a national program.
I hope Spyderco never takes "police" off the blade.

Good question,
Id rather insted of seeing a spyderbug on the Police model ,have the text take up a smaller portion of the blade that still allows effecient cleaning with wire wool in those rusty spot situations. One thing id like to say is any item focusing on law enforcement or military should have the majority of names and brand icons removed, taking from a good saying here
"good kit is ugly as f**k"
Id honestly be happier seeing a knife labelled with "Military" or "Police" over a blade etched with "Physco's Stiletto #1", or embossed with a pentagram even if thats an extreme figment of imagination. The Military and Police are labelled for the Jobs they are mostly applied in, anyone seeing those knives used outside their designed for usage will get a little sheeped in any case.

Well said. I couldn't agree more.

Dear Friends,
I believe that the Police etch will firmly remain where it belongs.
Trust me on this one. :D

Well sgt, for my part I'd rather not look like a buff or a wannabe. I don't see it as caving in to political correctness, but rather as not flying false flags. That said, the presence or absence of the engraved lettering on the Police and/or Military is of no real concern to me personally, as I find both knifes too long to ride comfortably in my pocket.
Michael, as far as I know, there was never a production version of the ParaMilitary produced with ParaMilitary on the blade. The almost uninversally negative response on the forums to the presence of that word on the prototype pictures caused it to be removed before production started.
As for the Police, as Phil pointed out, the POLICE lettering has come and gone several times in the twenty some years that it has been in production. Perhaps that will happen again, perhaps it will not. It does seem to have been brought back before to satisfy the users, so I tend to agree with Dr Lecter that it will stay. Do wish that if they keep it, they'd consider bringing back the old POLICE MODEL serif font lettering as it looks far better than the present style.

My police I got from Deacī has the sign engraved. Lucky to have it, its one of my favourites. Hope it will stay there on the future models too. Thanks Paul;)

The engraving of "POLICE" or "MILITARY" should stay on. If someone is concerned with looking like a poser, then pick a different spyderco model to use. The engraving of those words probably helps sell them. As a deputy sheriff, I vote to leave it on. Its a branding that has made that model what it is.
