View Full Version : Thinking about a G-10 Police next...

I know, I know...

I just got my serrated Military, but I have to dream, don't I? Can't let the imagination cool down now, can I? And it will be a little while before I get it.

Anyway, I think that maybe a plain edged, flat ground G-10 Police model might be a great companion for my serrated stainless steel Police, or for the serrated Military - for those days when I don't want to carry two Millies. The other knife I have been thinking about is the stainless Police w/ plain edge but w/ my serrated version, that's a lot of stainless. The G-10 version would allow me to experience that variation as well. Sal speaks highly of it, as do others here. It occurs to me that it's flat ground blade w/ it's not-too-deep profile might be just the thing for cutting the centre out of apple slices for instance. You know... "making the curves" during a cut. Something that is hard to do with a "tall" blade design like the Calypso, etc.

I know, I'm getting silly. But If I can't talk to you folks about this then who can I confide in?

Well, I'm kinda' thinking now that I should buy another stainless Police model after all. A plain edge would go very nicely w/ my serrated one, and they are so very classy looking.

Another thing attractive to me about the stainless models is their thin profile. I was kind of wondering about this aspect of the G-10 Police when I began this thread. Does anyone here have a current G-10 Police model? Are they noticeably thicker than the S/S version? I know that they are lighter...

I've found my G-10 Rookie to be just a bit too thick for comfortable IWB carry, which is my preferred method for EDC's. I suspect that part of this effect is due to it's small overall size and width as well. Perhaps a similarly thick knife that was wider would not be uncomfortable in the same way. I haven't compared the G-10 Rookie to my Military for instance, and the Military is extremely comfortable IWB.

So folks, how does the G-10 Police "ride"?

I ordered the plain edge stainless steel Police yesterday. I'll write back once I've got it to report upon it's relationship to it's brother; Mr. serrated Police. Jeff/1911.

Hi Jeff. I have a serrated SS Police and a plain-edged G-10 Police. I agree with you that the SS models--although "heavier" than other handled models--are otherwise comfortable to carry, especially IWB.

I think you made a good choice with the SS PE Police. IMO, the blade on the SS is sturdier than the flat ground blade on the G-10 model. Also, the G-10 and its sturdy clip seem to have more drag when deploying the knife from my pocket. However, if coring apples is a priority for you, I think the flat ground blade on the G-10 Police will do a better job. At times, I am tempted to buy another Police (PE SS) but there are so many other knives out there begging for my money. (I'm waiting for the Spyderco balisong with the Police-like blade). Well, just hinting and hoping.

Toothed,

Thanks for your reply, and the benefit of experience.

I really came close to buying the G-10 Police w/ it's flat ground, plain edge blade. I decided to buy the s/s version because of the reasons that you state to do with ease of "holstering" and perceived sturdiness. I may still buy a G-10 Police in the future although it seems to be quite similar to my large Calypso in practical function, so like you I would likely look to another model for more variety.
