View Full Version : What other knives do you like?

Hi guys. I am new to the collecting thing and have typically bought different knives from different makers in the past. This was done without any brand loyalty. I find Spyderco has , on the whole, a line that appeals to me. That said, there are few other knives out there that I would like to have some day.Are there any knives in your current collections that really called out to you other than Spydies? When you got it/them, did it/they turn out to be more or less what you expected, or did they actually strengthen your brand loyalty to Spyderco? Here are a couple of my experiences with other knives to date:I got rid of a William Henry knife because it looked too pretty to actually use once I got it home; a SOG Twitch II with assisted opening broke at the spring within two months and had terrible blade play; a Benchmade Mini-Stryker just didn't feel/look right in my hand (eventhough I really wanted it to!) and a CRKT M16 CF that still manages to find its way back into my pocket despite me knowing better! :) Thanks for any input.

Aloha flipe8,

You mean there are other companies who make knives?  :D

I revolve around :spyder: , but I do like a few of the "other guys" knives. I like Ontario Fixed blades, Older Cold Steel knives like their AUS8 stuff, I have a few CRKT's that i like, as well as a BM CE mini Griptilian. One Emerson Raven...that's pretty much it! :D A buncha FB's like Ceya's DMK's are cool, and I hope to get a CKE Custom too.

I like the byrd SS line, and I just got a Boker Helios in X15 steel from Terry Trahan. That is gonna make for an interesting tester regarding corrosion resistance compared to H1. The Boker Escrima Dagger folder is neat looking but a bit too expensive. :p

God bless

For me Spyderco and Benchmade vie for top honors in my collection. From there, I currently have a few Mictoechs, SOG's, and Emersons...

Now from my "olden days" I have a bunch of Cold Steels, Bucks, Case, Remington, et al... But I do miss the older Black Jack Knives... I had a bunch of them and made a MINT selling them on Ebay a few years ago, but I did like them alot.

I bought a Native a few months back. It is the best knife I have ever had. Since then, I have picked up a few more Spydercos. All very high quality knives!! I like them all. I would not mind getting a Benchmade Mini Griptillian sometime, and I have just seen a Swamp Rat Rat Trap folder that looks kinda sweet, although it is pretty close really to the 80mm Manix which I already own. There are many nice knives!!

I buy Spydies more than anything else, by a long shot. I have found a few others that I like, but not their whole lines, just individual knives. I find that every Spyderco knife I see has qualities that I want, are terrifically made, and where else can you get the 'service' you get right here? :) I have a few CRKTs and I like the Ken Onion Kershaw line (Chive, Leek, etc.) All I can really say is that :spyder:s are the best! God bless! :)

Spyderco without any doubt is by far my favorite commercially produced knife. There are just very, very few Spydercos that I don't like. I can name them all on one hand. But there are other knives I also like. Benchmade is a very distant second which is not even remotely close to Spyderco. But the handful of Benchmades that I like I really, really like. The Boguszewski Spike is an immortal design.

I wish that Phil Boguszewski and Mr. Glesser would get together for a collaboration. Some of Cold Steel's specialty items I like.

Boker is another knife company I find extremely interesting. They are a very innovative company. There are other knife companies out there too. I just have absolutely no interest in them :(

I personally collect Spyderco's only! I have a BUNCH of knives from my Dad, lots of older Case, Buck, Parker Frost(do not like at all), Straight razors, Bokers, Kissing Crane, Solingen, Buck Creek, the list goes on and on. But all I like are the Spyder's. They are built tough, they come sharp, they stay sharp, and they are user friendly, built to be a used! Sure there are other brands out there, but gimme a Spyderco over any of them!

Other than Spyderco - I have about 20 knives from a wide variety of manufacturers or makers. I have a few old users and gift knives which have sentimental value. Others than those, if I could only keep knives from one other manufacturer/maker they would be those made by John Greco. I have a flat-ground Falcon folder and a MST Mark II 7. Both are uncompromisingly tough. The MST is made from a 12 3/4' long piece of 1/4' a-1 tool steel. A 7" blade, full tang handle with integral guard and "pinky hook" I really think this is a knife that you can depend on to withstand anything!

Besides :spyder: , I have a fondness for Chris Reeve and Benchmade. There are others that have tickled my fancy, but any additions to the collection will be from Spyderco or BM. Would like to get a large classic Sebbie with micarta inlay, but it is doubtful.

Nice pics, David.... :)

I own about 30 from other Co's including; Bear, CS, SOG, Hibben, Kabar Microtech, among others. I own 7 BM, very good quality knives. A large Sebenza would be a nice addition. I just got into :spyder: about 4 months ago, and now own 13. I don't like a few :spyder: models, I like them ALL! IMO, :spyder: can't be beat for the $$$. BM makes good quality knives, :spyder: makes TOP quality knives. I mean; Can ya top a Lil'Temp!!!

Since I finally discovered Spyderco a couple years ago, have bought very little else. Am left handed, and mildly arthritic, so the combination of the round hole and front lock is hard to beat for ease of both opening and closing.

Did buy a Benchmade 42 - Spyderfly was not even a rumor yet at the time, and I wanted to try a balisong. Did make me appreciate Spyderco sharpness even more, although the butter knife dull blade may have saved me a trip to the ER.

Bought a CRKT VanHoy Snap Lock - had to see for myself how that concept worked. Turned out to be an interesting conversation piece, but not terribly practical. Spyderco could take a bit of a lesson from it however. Knife was ambi, but the shape of the handle required a "handed" clip, so it came with two clips, and a cheap but usable "L" handle torx wrench to allow making the switch.

And finally, have bought a couple Berettas - for reasons anyone who has ever visited my website should be able to guess. ;) :D

I mostly buy and collect Spyderco. I think no other knife manufacturer makes sharper knives right out of the box. I have 50 plus Spydercos!!!

I also have a few Busse combats to fill in where Spyderco has yet to go, the Massive chunk of steel fixed blade Knife! I also have some Striders which I find to be quite awesome, I really like the nightmare grind versions.

Busse Combat Battle Misstress with my beloved Native! Just for size comparison.

As stated before...I just learned about Spyderco a couple of months ago so all of my knives are by other makers. Most of my everyday pocket knives are hardware store cheapies. Mainly because I am hard on knives. I have a Cutco fixed blade serrated edge that I strap to my hip everytime I venture out into the woods. I have a nice little Case fixed blade I keep in my pack along with an old military knife my dad brought back from Vietnam. I have a Buck folder I keep in my pouch along with my Leatherman multi-tool. I have a Wyoming skinning knife that proved itself two years ago...it is nice to be able to replace the blade instead of having to spend time sharpening it. I also have a nice Case folder that a girlfriend gave me back in the 70's. I think that does it for name brands. I have a lot of others. I will try and get a picture of them this weekend and start a new post.

I carry a folder I made myself quite a bit with a Wharncliff blade of 1095 steel. I also like to carry my BenchMade 420 Resistor that I Waved. My Buck/Strider Mini 881 sees some pocket time these days also along with my Native, and my Salt that I personally upgraded. Usually for me the biggest decision in the morning besides what I'm going to eat is which knife to carry for the day. :D Life is tough.

My collection of spydercos is my favorite and largest (around 20 off the top of my head). I also like benchmade. The benchmade mini skirmish is probably my favorite benchmade with the sequel model 707 next. I have a spear point benchmade 9500 plain edge which is kind of hard to find. I also have an apparition, which was a major disappointment. As far as older knives, I have several case knives. One bulldog stag, a buffalo, two mint sidewinders (one of my favorites) with boxes, a hammerhead with box and a mako with box both stag handles. I also have a Buck Akonua. very nice. I never really got into Puma. But, spyderco is my favorite modern knife company.

In addition to Spyderco I like:

Chris Reeve - a large 2003 LE redwood burl Sebenza is my single favorite knife.
Benchmade - yeah the "B" word, I really like my 710HS and 42MC.
Opinel - they cut like crazy, are very inexpensive, and are fun to customize.
Queen D2 slip joints - I love my CSB whittler.
Ontario - my trusty machete has seen many adventures and performed superbly.
Victorinox - their Fibrox handled kitchen knives are very good.
Messermeister - a 10" Merridian Elite chef's knife is the best knife in my kitchen.

The last few months, the majority of purchases have been with Spyderco. I do have a LOT of others, and do pick up some during the "in between" times, when I either can't find or can't decide moments :) This weekend, I got a Gray Caly Jr (my second), but I also acquired a BM530 and Camillus Blaze (my Heat was getting lonely :D ) Last week I bought a Buck Bantam, before that a Timberline Envoy. Week before, I think, it was my first Gray Caly Jr. Almost bought a Military as well, but will probably get an Al-Mar SERE 2K first, unless someone gets a Mini Manix locally. For me, it just depends on what drives me at the moment. I'm expecting that the new Bryds should be arriving in Calgary shortly, and will probably get one of those. There is a very high likelihood that when the new Delicas appear, I will get at least one, as well as a Centofante 4 once I see one here.

Is "collecting" having many knives of many brands laying around getting dusty or just hoarding lots of knives for the fun of it? :D My Delica and Cricket get carried...everyday. I don't think I am a "collector" tho... :D

I only "discovered" knives (not just Spyderco, but knives!) this past summer. It all started with a little Spyderco knife. Now I have 6. But I also have two non-Spydercos: a Wenger Mouse II (which maybe counts as a cousin?) and a Benchmade Ritter Mini-Grip. Not counting the small Spydercos on my keychain(s), I alternate between the Spur and the Mini-Grip for EDC. Even though I generally favor Spydercos (my next one will be another Spydie!), I must admit that the Ritter Mini-Grip is my favorite at the moment. I really like the shape/size of the blade, and the knife just fits my hand well.

fret - Hi from Calgary!!

I don't know if "hoarding" would be the term - maybe "accumulation" ? :D I get a huge kick out of trying different blades out in the normal realm of day-to-day use. The ones that I carry the most often are the ones that I've found best for my EDC things. Lately, I've been "acquiring" a few to see if I can find something to replace my users. My current most used are FRN/PE/Delica, BM 556 Mini-Grip, and Ka-Bar/Dozier Folding Hunter - I do also carry a Gray Caly Jr., Centofante III when I wear cargo pants which is pretty well most work days. Those get replaced with a Paramilitary and BM Griptillian when I have to knock down server boxes at work. I bought a Byrd Meadowlark a while ago to see if it could replace the Ka-Bar. I wear the Ka-Bar IWB, and it turned out that the Byrd was too heavy (actually, it wasn't that bad - just gives me an excuse to buy the Crow when it shows up here :D ) This weekend, over and above the second Gray Caly Jr., I picked up a BM530 and Camillus Blaze. On the initial pass, neither of these will replace either my Delica or Mini-Grip in the immediate future, though they may get rotated in and out in my cargo pants or perhaps get stuck in my Maxpedition Jumbo. It's a little early yet :) I've had both with me all week over and above my "usual" so I have a lot of blades with me :) I don't use my Gray Caly Jr. or Cento III all that often, but it's sure a pleasure when I do :) For me, I learn lots and am having a hoot with this :D

Other than Spyderco, I enjoy Emerson factory knives and Striders.

I like all three brands. I've had excellent service with Spyderco and Strider. Never had to deal with Emerson yet, though I hear their service is good. Gotta say, I do love my Striders for their great performance and durability.

right on Joe, I don't know what was the MSRP on the warrior but I saw one up for sale on BF for 400$ (it might still be available). My guesstimation is they originally cost around 200-250$ and gain a little value when they stopped making FB after Al Mar's death.

Actually the first "real" knife I got was a Herder slipjoint from my Gandpa(was about 10 years old back then).

He always had one on him and so did my Dad.

You could make those buggers real sharp with little efford.
