I just returned from vacation in Colorado. While I was there, I had the good fortune to make a long arranged visit to the Spyderco factory.

I was delighted to meet Sal and Joyce. In addition to looking at some of the new prototypes (I missed Atlanta), Sal gave me a detailed explanation of how a compression lock works. This lock is unbelievably strong.

I can't wait until some of these new knives come out. In particular, I'm waiting for the new Impalas to come out.

By far the most impessive part of my visit was my tour of the factory. Some of the specialized machines were certainly something, but it was the pride of the craftsmen that just blew me away. I met a dozen of them, and every single one of them delighted in demonstrating both how professional and how excited they were about the work they were doing.

There are a tremendous number of hand done operations (which adds cost to the manufacture of Spyderco knives), but that's what makes these knives such high quality pieces.

Roughly twenty five percent of Spyderco's production is made in the Golden plant. The craftsmen work on small batches and dilligently work to insure that each knife is consistantly made from one knife to the next.

From there, the sharp eyed quality control people guarantee it.

The bad news is how many more Spydies' I'm going to end up buying. Of course, I'll have the confidence of knowing I'm buying the best.

Thank you so much.

One way or the other, you pay for your tools!

Congratulations, gadfly! Sounds like a cool trip.

I envy you. Keep thinking am going to go check out Tucson one of these days. If I do, will try to schedule a side jaunt to Golden.
