Rust resistance, edge holding, sharpening ease, etc. How does it compare to others?

From this comsumers point of view Vg-10 is a dynamite user steel. It now ranks as a favorite along
with aus-8 & 440C. For my money Vg-10 makes a great using knife in any blade configuration.
It cuts and hold an edge like it's never supposed to get dull and sharpens like aus-8....easy.
The very worse steel I've owned is the the much touted ats-34. i dislike so much that if a knife
uses it for blade steel I loose interest right there. Game over. There are others and all have a good
point or two. It's all in what you like.

I too love VG-10. It is really easy to sharpen and holds an edge well. I was wondering what the difference (in performance and etc) between CPM-440V and VG-10. My military holds an edge well, but doesn't take a polished edge like my Calypso Jr in VG-10 will.

hi Mrbentheman. VG-10 is a fairlly new stainless steel (developed in the last 10 years). It is produced by a Japanese Foundry and ws offerred to the indusstry as a good knife steel.
Spyderco introduced the (then) experimental steel in a FB design by Bill Moran. Bill tested the steel and found it to be quite good. Our testing at Golden showed the same results so we produced the Moran with VG-10.
It's a ingot steel. Edge holding is quite good, certainly in the top 20% of ingot stainless steels. Edge holding is not a good as the CPM steels.
Corrosion resistance is quite good. Better than most of the ingot and CPM steels, but not quite as good as 440C, MBS-26 or BG-42.
It will get very sharp. In there with AUS-8 & MBS 26 which are very fine grained homogenous steels.
Cost is higher than many ingot steels and processing is close tolerance.
Difficulties lie in heat treating; preventing camber (warping) on longer thinner blades is difficult.
All in all a very good steel. We make a fair number of models with VG-10 now, with more on the way.
