I was thinking "The only knife you will ever need" but that might be self defeating for business to sell. Then I thought "the All-American", but the "Patriot" works better...1 more vote for the Patriot.

I don't want to be a Party Pooper, but I fail to see the point of this interest in a knife made to appease some weak-bladdered lawmakers. The UKPK is just a Calypso Jr in sheep's clothing. Sure, it is collectable and all that, but why copy it AND add a lock AND give it a new name? Is the Calypso Jr not good enough ? Just bring it out the Caly again with G-10 scales, S30V steel and a wire clip. When a locker is legally OK, why make a slip-joint ?

Why not bring out the Military with a slip-joint and a DK hole. Now wouldn't that be exciting ?

Just my feelings on the matter.

For those who don't know :
UKPK - United Kingdom Pen Knife. Blade does not lock.
DK - Made for Denmark, with a highly bevelled opening hole to prevent one- hand opening.

This Calypso is a very popular model for the knife knuts...the UKPK can be thought of as the next generation Calypso, as many find the ergos better etc. Many find it exciting to update the Calypso to the Calypso II (with happens to have the same handle shape as the slip jointed UKPK) Sal's quote from one of the many UkPK threads going on at the moment explains further:

Current design calls for a bolster, lock-back, full flat ground VG-10 (& ZDP variant). Two scale materials to distinguish the VG from the ZDP.
Any suggestions on scale material would be appreciated.
If the pattern is well received, we'd follow up with a smaller version and a FRN version."sal

Based on reading many of Sal's thoughts regarding the necessity to push the envelope in steels, cars, and of course knives, I get the feeling that Sal would rather improve an old model and produce the improved version rather than just slapping a new handle material on an old model that never sold well to the general public.

What about Caly Supercharged ?! (as a joke..)
Really, Colorado Whittler is my choice.

The obvious choice: APK (guess what the "A" stands for?) :p

I like "Patriot". It works well if you think about it being an American knife based on one originally designed for the British ;)

I thought it was going to be called the Calypso Jr. III, that's what Sal is calling it so far at least. I'd say go with that.

Salerico made me chuckle.

If it locks, is it still a 'PenKnife'?

Since it's Sal's design (and one he's fond of), how about the "Sal Glesser Patriot"? I don't know how he'd feel about it, but I think it would be fitting.

I know I am not supposed to get into this as I live north of the border  , but "Patriot" does not feels right, as it is for a knife that has been prior made for the UK market.

I know the UKPK design was based on the much loved Caly Jr, just like the DKPK. So I like the idea of a APK.

And just to be sure to go on with this Idea, how about a CPK (Canadian Pen knife): G-10, S30V, but UNFLICKABLE!!!

SO  ;) :)

Hello psimonl, You have a right to your opinion, just like anyone else here bro. I apologize if I was in anyway inconsiderate towards any of our neighboring countrymen. That isn't my intention. The reason I stated "The Patriot", is in everyone of our Country's, we all have "Patriots". Which to me means, "One Who Loves His or Her Country". When this little beauty makes it's debut, it will be in the hands of all of the Spyderco Fans around the world. So, thats why I said "The Patriot". I felt like the name kind of fit. Not just for our Country here in the USA, but every Country that all our Spyderco Brothers and Sisters are part of. :) Again, I apologize. ;)

God Bless :)

I think "Patriot" has a little too much of a "freedom fries" angle. "Esquire" wasn't bad, but I still like Ampik (American Penknife, or AMPK). Dialex sort of agrees.

I really don't understand why putting a lock on the UKPK makes it a "USA" model. It seems like it would just make it a non-UK penknife and not make it a knife specifically for any one other country

exactly what you said David! the PK is a non locking spyderco among locking spydercos and soon an auto (;)), no need to be in UK to carry it and like it...

I came within a click of ordering the UKPK from Hennie today. I just could not overcome the visual of that blade slamming closed on my fingers. I know the odds are that it would not happen but s#@t does happen. I wonder if there have been any reports of that happening in the UK?

I still think Salerico is a good name. It gives credit to Sal and Eric for producing so many great knives.

Hello redhawk44p, How about a combination. I agree, lets give credit where credit is due. Sal and Eric have given us so many awsome quality knives, collaborations, great service, advice, and always seem to amaze us and suprise us with something new. So, how about "The Glesser Patriot", "CGP" (Colorado Glesser Project), or "CGPK" (Colorado Glesser Pen Knife). It will symbolize where it was made and who made it. What it boils down to, are the two gentlemen and company behind this awsome design that all spydie fans will appreciate, or grow to appreciate. Just a thought. :)

God Bless All :)

Sal seems extremely modest. We will need an big response to the Glesser Patriot name or he will not go for it?

"Glesser Patriot" sounds great, and would be a fitting tribute. Patriot describes anyone who loves their country; it's not limited to Americans.

Just because it's an American version of a UK knife, doesn't mean that its name should center around the "American" theme.

Given the sharp flat grind and the handle with great ergos and a grippy material like G10, how about a descriptive name that also leverages the knife's brand equity and heritage?

Like the Spyderco "Scalpyl."

That one's free if you decide to use it, Sal. I normally charge $100 per hour for marketing consulting. ;)

I think that continuing the Calypso name would be perfect. Many people here make a direct connection between perfect ergos, scapel sharpe blade and great size with the Calypso name :spyder:

Long live the Calypso! :spyder:

HI Guys, interersting thread, thanx for the kind comments.

Actually the name "Patriot" has been used, I believe by SOG.

also, my "attitude" towards naming things with my name has never felt right. The farthest I go in that area is my "tag".

The current "in-house" names are the "Caly 75mm" and the "Caly 63mm". The 75mm is waiting on a concept model.

Calypso was the daughter of Atlas so why not Atlas.
She lived on the island of Ogygia,so theres another good name. Her lover was Odysseus and that is yet another great name.
