View Full Version : Para's compression lock and Manix strength

I have a Para and I really like the knife. The compression lock is, without a doubt, the smoothest lock I've every used. I am either plannig to purchase another Para (for backup in case something happens to mine) or a Manix 80mm for the backup.
I want to know about the relative strength of the two knives. I realize that the Para has steel running partially down the inside of the G10 handles. How does this compare with the Manix. Other things constant, I would tend to opt for the lighter weight of the Para.
Also, does anyone know how thick the steel liner in the Para is compared to the thickness of the G10 handle? Is it treated to have high strength.
What about the feel in hand of the two knives? Is the Manix 80mm much thicker than the Para?
Unfortunately, I don't have a convenient opportunity to put my hands on the Manix and compare it to the Para before purchasing. So, I ask for your input as I make this decision.
Thanks. You folks are always helpfu.

Locks almost never fail because their "strength" was overcome. It's much more common for a lock to accidentally release (e.g., torquing a linerlock or squeezing down the bar on a lockback).

You can do a search here and find some comparison pics of these two. I believe PJRocco did a Sunday picture show with some good ones. It's nice to see another Para fan, I couldn't do without mine!

Para is the best!!! (current available)
The Para is very nice and is lighter, but I really do like my 80mm Manix. When opened up it is almost like a fixed blade knife. Very solid!! Here are a couple of pictures of it with the Lil'Temp. Sorry, I don't have a Para.

Here is a photo of mine showing the Manix 80, Paramilitary and UKPK together. Sorry, I didn't take one showing their relative thickness.

Thanks to all of you.
Axlis, thanks for referring me to PJRocco's Monday pics show. They are helpful (by the way Axlis, it was your pics of the blue Dodo that my wife fell for...If you didn't see my posting titled "Soph. Lady falls Dodo" you may enjoy the story).
ront and rs2, those pics are very helpful too. It's very nice to see the Manix compared to other knives. The scale of the knife seems to be similar to the Para, but heavier.
You know how this thing will probably work out...I'll probably get another Para (because it is a great knife) and get the Manix 80 too :D . I don't know yet.
You guys have been very helpful. Thanks a bunch.

The Para is probably my favorite EDC knife. G10, compression lock, light... and as tough as a truck.. But the Manix 80mm is right up there with it. I think I prefer the Para simply because of the compression lock. It is by far the best lock I have encountered in my day.
I would highly recommened the Manix 80mm... But don't forget.. they are both production pieces.. So you have some time..
Good luck on your desicion.. I hope you get both. You will not be dissappointed with the Manix 80mm.

I have both, but carry the Para more than any. Why, thinner, lighter, and still has that thick strong blade. That blade is just a hair over 3" and perfect for me.
Good Luck!

the Manix80 feels much thicker in the hand than the Paramilitary...the Manix 80 actually feels better in my smallish hands than my Little temp...both are "built like tanks"!
