I purchased a Ladybug the other day from a local dealer and had a question about it. On the Products page, the Ladybug blade is shown as 1 and 5/16ths inches long. However, my trusty ruler shows the blade to be 1 and 11/16ths or 1 and 5/8ths depending on how the blade is held.
I am measuring the cutting edge of the blade only. With the unsharpened tang, the blade measures 1 and 15/16ths in length.
This is being measured by laying the blade directly on the ruler, with the unsharpened tang resting against the end of the ruler at the zero mark.
Is there something wrong with the knife, or is there an error on the site?
Thanks.

However unrealistic it may be, blades are officially measured from the end of the handle to the point. Should say legally in most US jurisdictions. Apparently in England, they measure the cutting edge.
Some web dealers list both the overall blade length and the cutting edge. But, it's easier to just measure the entire blade, since that is what is most important, in most instances.
I believe the thinking is that when a blade has been stabbed into something, it likely will go to the entire length of the blade, regardless of the length of the ricasso/choil. Of course, such thinking was done before the onset of folders with thumbstuds. Blades with dual thumbstuds should, IMO, be measured from the tip back to the front edge of the studs.
A few knived are designed so that the cutting edge extends all the way to the handle. The new Camillus EDC is one. Many Spydercos are designed with a choil/ricasso that can protect the index finger of the user should the lock fail. The Wegner does the best job of this of any Spyderco with which I'm familiar.
Hope this helps.

I must have not been clear with something. With the choil, the blade is 1 and 15/16ths in length. Without the choil, the blade is between 1 and 11/16ths and 1 and 5/8ths.
Both measurements are significantly larger than the 1 and 5/16ths listed on the site. The only way I can measure 1 and 5/16ths is to measure from the middle of the first serration.
Hope this clears things up.

The catalogue lists the blade as being 1 15/16" and the cutting edge as 1 3/4" so I can only assume the figure on the website is an error.

Thanks, Clay. I didn't think my ruler would be that off. 1 and 3/4ths is 12/16ths, close to 11/16ths, so I guess someone made an error (maybe put 5/16ths instead of 5/8ths?).
Thanks for the reply. It's a great little knife, in spite of the chisel grind.

Boy,.....you guys are good <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
The correct bladelength on the LadyBug is 1 15/16"49mm and I have corrected the error on our website. Thanx for keeping me on my toes.
