Hello all!! First poster here, I have been "lurking" for a while, but i have a good one to get me on the board. My Father has been EDCing a SE FRN Delica for an age, which i bought for him to replace his first PE FRN Delica. He's a south paw that has gotten used to carrying/opening right handed.
I want to replace it with something but have some criteria to work around:

must be tip up, cause i don't want to try to retrain a guy that has adapted to a rightie world
Will be PE cause that's what he likes, and he's my Dad
Should be about the same size as the Delica

So I am thinking a PE Yellow Salt 1.
But i would kinda like to introduce a new design around the above criteria. So...
PE Native 1
-or-
PE Caly Jr.

ideas, suggestions???

Hi Tyler, welcome to the forums. Hope you enjoy your stay.
The Native is a nice knife and the clip can be changed for left or right tip up carry. Have you looked at the new Delica4. It has changed quite a bit. Very nice with VG-10 steel, nested steel liners, stronger tip and it can be changed for tip up/tip down, left and right carry. Very versatile. It will be alot different than his old Delica. I hope that is ok that I added this picture??

A big hearty welcome to the Forum here Tyler :) . I would recommend based on what you told me that a Golden Colorado made Native with S30V is just what the Doctor ordered for you. IF you just have to have a "tip UP" knife then I would go with either the bigger or smaller 80mm MANIX. I just don't think you could go wrong either way. A LIttle Temperance would actually be superb but good luck finding one. :) :spyder:

Ront,
Fantastic advice! It's in keeping with tradition, which has it's values. He got used to carrying rightie because his first Delica had the FRN clip, so when he got the left/right clip, he changed nothing.
I'm not finding any pics anywhere, I would like to see what Delica 4 tip-up/tip-down handles looks like.
I do like the Salt 1 for it's rounded(ish) tip and enlarged thumb hole, don't care too awfully much about the whole no-rust thing.
I am VERY utility-minded when it comes to my Spyders. My EDC for work is my Remote Release 1(soon to be 2).
Again, thanks!

*edit* I see the picture this time around, Good Show! :D

Hello Tyler, Welcome to the "Family" and Enjoy Your Stay. I agree with ront, the New Delica 4 is an Awsome upgrade from the older model. Particularly the tip (stronger and somewhat rounded now) and the adjustable pivot pin. This should fit him just fine. The Salt 1 and Caly Jr. are also very good choices. Good Luck and Take Care :) .

God Bless ;)

Tyler, the new Delica4's are just starting to show up at dealers. There are not many pictures of them around yet. Please take a look at this excellent review that Scott did on the new Delica4. It pretty much covers all the bases(except picture, since he spends all of his $$ on knives and not cameras :)). http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19162
The handles stay the same, just the screw holes are there to change the clip around. Very nice.

Hope that helps, Ron

Welcome to Spyderland Tyler! The Native sounds like a good choice, you can't beat the bargain for S30v steel, and it's ergos.

Hi Tyler,
Might take a look at the Adventura. It's not FRN but rather Stainless but its a slick little knife. It's been my EDC since it arrived. Plain recurve edge which I have grown to love and its 4 way carry so left right TU or TD. I carry mine Left TU personally.

BTW,, welcome to the forum.

Peace

Thanks for the warm recepition! You guys are getting me in the right direction.
I'm on my 3rd Native these days, probably my favorite overall, ever. But i surely like the versitility of the Delica 4, for someone else. Me, I know what I want, that's why I have a box-full of Spyders.

I was going to suggest the Native myself, and the Delica 4 as the second option. I do agree that the Delica's handle is less specialized, so I'd go with the new Delica, sounds like a winner to me. Stronger tip, enlarged hole, nested liners, jimping. Seems like if your pappy enjoyed the other Delica, he should like the new one as well. If not, let him handle your Native and see what he thinks.

:spyder: I recommend the soon discontinued dodo. Superior ergonomics with multiple hand positions vis-a-vis finger choils, ambi tip-up carry and a wickedly versatile cut-anything blade! :spyder:

Welcome to the forum Tyler.

I'm going to cast another vote for the Delica 4 as well. I'm left handed as well, and I think it's a great knife. Even if your Father has gotten used to right handed carry, he may want to try left handed carry, and the Delica 4 has that versatility.

It also has the slightly rounded tip that is stronger as well. Not to mention it's inexpensive and begs to be used hard.

It's been beating the famed Dodo out for rear pocket carry.

Hi Tyler, the cally jr only comes tip down....Delica4/Native/and Salt are all great choices...I guess the S30v Native for 39-40 bucks at Wally World (if you can find it) and the Delica4 would be the least expensive choices.....add on about $5 for a Salt if corrosion resistance is a factor.

Hi Tyler,

If your dad loves really (and I mean REALLY) sharp knives, try to find him a Caly jr ZDP!! It's tip down carry only I know, but it's cutting ability is outragious. Full flat grind, great ergo's, lightweight! Need I say more....

Men (and women)! I think its been decided, Delica IV shall be the next to find a home in my Dad's pocket, for these reasons: it's a design I know he likes, if he wants to carry the same way, he can, if he wants to try a different carry, he can.
no one knows what the future holds, I'm not above getting him another knife, later. Next time i will get creative. and i never met a Spyder I didn't like, but for now I'm going with a fail-safe.

where can I get a cheap Delica 4 already?
I think i cought a hint of a late-christmas Centofante IV at dinner last night.

*edit* I really like the Caly Jr idea as well, those seem to take some finding, to ge the right one. plus i would like to get TWO :D
