View Full Version : Big Calypso: too good for a safe queen (a little praise) pics

Greetings you all :)

As of yesterday, I put my big Calypso into the EDC rotation.

What a great knife it is. I read that Sal designed this knife for himself. Well it seems that he put the knife together personally by hand too. The fit & finish is flawless(and I'm very picky as you will know by now) When you open the knife it feels as if the knife is one single piece. No play it either direction.
Furthermore, the knife doesn't weigh a thing and cuts like a chainsaw. This knife is too good to keep for collection only.

Since I don't want to sell this knife, I decided to carry and use it. I gave the knife a little ride on my sharpmaker and it's shaving sharp now.

This would be a great knife to bring back with G10 handles with 1 liner on the clip side. I don't think it will be a second Military or Police, because the blade shape is so much different.

Just one thing; how will the Micarta hold up to the screws of the clip?

By carrying and using it you have to wonder whay this Spyder is "forgotten".

These are not the best of pics, but it's that time of year over here, that you hardly get any good light all day.

Mine's a safe queen, but I do sometimes think about getting another for a user.

Aloha guys!

spydutch, I give ya credit for using the C54! I had saved up a long time for one, only to have someone beat me to it. Thanks to The Deacon, I now have one, and I did entertain the thought of using it awhile back...however...

I decided against it. :o

As for the screws holding up in Micarta, FWIW, I gave my father the Jr. version and it has not left his pocket since I gave it to him. Not the most "knife educated", he uses (abuses?) this knife daily, and when I last saw him a few weeks ago, three screws still held the clip to the knife. :p

Enjoy your pocket lightsaber...and freely use the Crocodile Dundee line of, "That's naw a knaweef..." :D

God bless and take care!

Awesome catch. I say...carry it if you got it. :D This is one of the only Spyderco's that I really want that I haven't snagged yet. I will one day though. I love the lines, ergonomics, full flat grind, light weight, fit & finish, etc. Pretty much everything about it. Enjoy that fine hand tool. It's a good one.

Judging by the photos it looks like either a longer, narrower Endura or a Police model without the stainless handles and top edge. Nice looking item, for sure.

I don't think the Caly' Jr. Micarta is thinking the same after seeing how my dad uses knives! :D

No wonder you like it. Yet, the full size Caly is IMHO among the most underrated :spyder: knives and I can't help wondering why... :(

I was blessed to find one of the C54s, numbered with #074V under my Xmass tree! (Thanks many times Santa ;) )
Its the BEST KNIFE EVER, only words I can say.
I would like to see a sprint run or as I call it, "resurection". ZDP 189 blade an option?! :p

I EDCied it only once, to be honest I am affraid of losing it.. :(
I will carry that one, but only for special occasions! Great knife, sleek lines, superb blade, everything you can dream for.

Paul, thanks for making my dream true ;)

Btw. the hamon is not real, though, but imagine the ZDP... :p

I am fortunate enough to own the Calypso and Calypso Jr. with micarta scales. The Calypso line is close to perfection for me and both are part of my EDC rotation. (It would cause me great pain to lose them, but it is a shame not to use them) Comfortable in pocket and grip, flat grind and excellent all-around blade shape. Many might be similar, but none compare.

No worries at all concerning the clip screws. The clips themselves are a little loose regarding tension. When I get around to it, I'll pull off both clips and bend them a little more to give a better grip to my jeans pocket.

My dream knife would be a mid-sized Calypso in micarta. There are enough times that the full size is a tad too large (you should see the saucer eyes when I whip it out in public), and the Calypso jr. can be a tad too small at times. Sal, show me a Calypso that splits the difference....Knife nirvana!!!

I can't blame you for using that beast Arend, "pocket chainsaw" no doubt about it. This is one of those knives that looks to be of much use in the kitchen as well. Thanks for sharing with us!

BTW- Welcome to the forums pizzaman :)

Thanks to all for the warm welcome.

I've been a knife buff for many years (After all, you can't own a pair of micarta Calypsos on accident). I have lurked here a few times in the past and decided to jump on in this time (hey, they water feels warm).

I'll try to toss in a few nuggets as I am able (and keep the turds to a minumum).

Cheers, TR
