Aloha ALL,
First of all, I am in shock to be home at this time and not at 0800hrs.
Anyway, they're at it at JimD's facility, and they were at it at the unit i was running tonight.
Long story short, two inmates started fighting in the bathroom. I dunno why this is, but I seem to always be the first to respond. Anyway, I saw one inmate pick up the other in the "fireman's carry" style and DUMP the other inmate on the corner of his head! I swear the guy broke his neck. Then the inmate who threw the other one (Matt Hughes style) is then raining knees to his face. All this happened in a matter of seconds...
I got in there and scooped the inmate up by his jaw, stood him up and he starts resisting, so I redirected him back downwards, and did a SWEEEEET hip throw using his head as a guide. We landed to where I was in "side control" or kesa gatame, and I was scanning around my area...something I couldn't believe I was doing since tunnel vision usually sinks in. Anyway, my partner drags out the inmate who got slammed. Can't believe the kid was still conscious! Partner almost got his left eye scratched out as this inmate appeared possessed!
As I was scanning my immediate surroundings, I noticed some "white foamy spit" flying up from under me. I had a choke hold on the "slammer" and when I looked at his face, he was coughing up spit and changing colors. I slacked off but maintained my position until my partner removed the other inmate. When I stood the inmate i had up, I still maintained an arm lock, and had my hand around the base of his neck...I informed him later, after all was said and done that I do NOT ever presume compliance until I am sure it's over.
I asked my acting supervisor where he was when this happened, and he says, "Well, I saw you throw the guy and then it looked like you were having fun with him, so I went with the other inmate."
Slammed my left knee (AGAIN)...cripes concrete hurts. Left elbow felt like I banged it although I don't remember how. :o Times like these, I am glad my center is lower than practically every inmate. I mean, I had to "man handle" the inmate I had, but then when physics kick in, woooooHooooo...he went flying, and I always seem to end up in the better position. Something I thank God for everytime this happens...
ANYWAY, no forced shift in Hell tonight, but I dunno what's worse. Forced shifts or the paperwork that follows such incidents! :p
Mahalo for the "vent"...and God bless!

Hey Bro!
Glad to hear you're on top :D Cr@p news about that knee! Boy, do you like to put it through the mill! Wear some knee pads under the BDU's! :p
You stay safe now...........BTW, when everything quietens down, make a template for the "use of force" forms, copy it and put them in the gear bag.........voila! Just fill in the date, times and name when required!!! ;) You want me to send you some pre-prepared! :p

Aloha Knifebro!
LOL, no kidding about the knee pads...cripes. I got a LOT of "weird looks" by the rest of the inmate pop after tonight...lot of 'em were from the "would be testers of the Daywalker". :D Oh well...as you know, it was just another day on the job. I do wanna invest in a good vest though...shakedown a few months ago revealed a buncha shanks.
You know sarge, I had some pre-made misconducts written up, for the most common violations. However, by the time the adjustment commitee gets to them, nothing ever happens.
Yes, I know...no tunnel vision. However, when there is an inmate who weighs solid 250+ charging at you, I just cannot help it! :o
Take care and I will be in touch. God bless and stay 360IJN always.

Yeah, I was thanking God all the way home, but i was thinking other things about my supervisor.
Will rest now sir, as I think I should take advantage of the fact that I was able to come home tonight. I know I am gonna feel this in the morning. :p Oh well...

I think CO's are limited to a billy club and their hands. I've heard of a lot of situations in hand to hand fighting where the victor armed himself with his enemy's weapon because it was easier to grab than his own. Those inmates have a lot of time to think about their situations and how to make opportunities, it's best to give them as few as possible.
Stay safe Chad.

Seriously though, glad to hear you weren't too badly hurt(make sure you ice your knee and elbow down, or they'll swell up like crazy), I hope your inmate pal has a splitting headache tomorrow.
Enjoy your time off today bro, it was well earned.
Why any other inmates would want to "test" you is beyond me, I know I wouldn't want to be on receiving end of an a**kicking by DAYWALKER, I wouldn't be conscious afterwards ;)
You guys need better support in there, administrative and CO. Having one CO break up a fight between two inmates makes me a little nervous.

wouldn't it be easier to just keep bouncing his skull off the cement, at least you only have to file paperwork on that inmate one last time. :p
I agree, invest in some good kneepads and a vest. Well worth it in your line of work.
Have to admit though, they won't try pulling anything with you in a while after another demonstration like that. As long as you keep taking down the alpha's, the rest co-operate until another one grows a pair and tries again.
Chad, glad you weren't hurt too badly. When it rains, it pours, eh? Obviously, you're trying to get a "One-Up" on me! :p
After having been involved in so damn many episodes such as this, when do we get a break?!
Oh, and to answer your question about which is worse...I'll do a mile of paperwork gladly in exchange for not having to do a forced shift.
Hang tough, bro', and if you need to talk to someone who's been there, don't hesitate to email me.
God bless!
Chad the more I hear you guys talk about your daily incidents in these institutions it makes me wonder if the government is doing nearly enough to ensure the safety and security of guys like yourself and jimd.
I can answer that: NO! Our administration, (not just mine, but where Chad, SimonG, and every other CO works) couldn't care LESS about whether or not we live or die. If we get killed, our families get a set amount, and that's it.
If an inmate is hurt or killed, there's no telling how much the admin will have to pay out (it'll be a lot, though).
Bottom line: The admin geeks sit in their air-conditioned offices, in no danger, and couldn't give a fiddler's f**k about us. And that's a fact!
how is that for the CO's anyway? i remember reading something about that you were not allowed carrying knifes at work, but that can be wrong..
guns, knives, tazers, pepperspray, whats your "tools"?
Tools? Well, I have a flashlight and a set of keys.
We only pull out pepper spray, stun guns, and real guns when it hits the fan, and IF the admin authorizes such toys.

Hey Chad, Like I said Brother, The Lord Has Your 6. I am glad to hear you and your WILLING :( co-worker are all OK. I noticed you stated that you kept looking around scanning the area/environment. Well when we train the way we do (visualization drills), we are always having to be prepared and ready for the unexpected. Even though we don't do it all the time, the training is always there and never leaves us. It's become part of our Survival Mode. I just wish some of OUR FELLOW Co-Workers/STUPIDVISORS (as I call them) had it . Outstanding Job Brother :D ! DYNAMITE Does Come in Small Packages ;) :p . Sounds like this Genius found out First Hand :D . Chad you Take Good Care Bro. a flashlight and a set of keys? oh well, that i consider to be the most mortal tools i can think of in a prison!! :D
and private stuff, like a nice concealed :spyder:? probably wouldnt work with the paperstuff in the end..
seems pretty strange to me that topic. no vests, no SD-toys, probably not even the stuff they caged our beloved hannibal lecter with.. :D well if all CO's look as massive as DW.. you must all be schwarzeneggers out there!! as you know i went through pretty some MA training. still i think "run and hide" is the best SD. but wont work in there. i couldnt stand that pressure..

I wish my arms were as large as Chad's. Mine aren't skin and bones, but they're nowhere near Chad's caliber.
There's no way I can consider bringing in a concealed knife into the prison, as we have to pass through a metal detector on the way in. Our employer doesn't trust us at all, and actually searches us more often than some of the inmates. Nice, huh? Yeah, I love the admin, too. Not!
I have a number of years of martial arts training. However, I've learned that it was quite a while, having gone through several actual incidents, before I could attain the presence of mind to be able to actually use my training in real life.

if its designed for, yes. there are different types outthere, some can take handgun ammo, some can take rifle amo (around 20kg, know that from protecting embassies with the armed forces) and some CAN take knives and the like. or even all together. but hey, you are looking at price range beginning (at least in good old swizzy-country) from 1'000 - 3'000 $, highend will even be custom made..

Hey Axlis, I can't speak for the COs, but on the LEOs side well...........for me anyway. Because I live in a small town (everbody knows everybody), I'm much more careful when I'm Off-Duty, most people know I'm in Law Enforcement, and I run across a lot of people I've arrested at one time or another. There have been a few times the tires on my personal vehicle have been slashed, vehicle has been "keyed"(paint scratched), beer bottles/cans thrown at the vehicle, life's been threatened serveral times. A while back, my son and I were walking in town, and a car "back-fired". I pulled my son behind me, went to draw my weapon (of course it wasn't there because I was Off-Duty), began scanning the area, and my son tells me "Dad! Your not at work, Relax"! That's when I noticed a little car struggling to get up a hill in town. It got to the point, when I want to spend time with my wife, I just go out of town where nobody knows me. Even then I'm not exactly relaxed. When we go in a store, I'm constantly looking over my shoulder, looking for cover/concealment. My wife gets very upset, and reminds me often "Relax Already, You're Not At Work or Even In Town...........So, Quit It"! :(  I am always on Edge. But, I'm Praying the Lord Will Help Me Relax. I am doing Better Though  :p . This is kind of an idea what I'm like outside of work. :(
I am much more relaxed when I have handlebars in my hands and a view of a BMX Track in front of me from the starting gate. Or, Of Course A Spyderco, which I enjoy flicking opened and closed as I "Annoy" the Wife :D.
God Bless :)

Aloha flipe8,
ALL off the job training. We had been taught some ground tactics and the stand up stuff was simply unrealistic, especially the WHEN to apply PPCT. Strange thing is, we got trained in the use of batons and PSpray yet we are not allowed to use or carry such things. Which is good in a way...I do not trust a lot of the staff who would be carrying such items. :o Much of my "training" if you can call it that was learned right outside my front door...on the street. Yes, I have dabbled in traditional and MMA, but from the start, I have always loved the simplest techniques. ESDS and Blauer's tactics I enjoy. We were doing something similar to the Blauer SPEAR a long time before we even saw it...cool, at least we were on the right page. However, my "combat training" for Hell has always been a prayer to start my day. :)
One of the worst things is friendly fire. I HATE when I am trying to get an inmate subdued and then WHAM!!! I feel about 2-4 guys jump ON me...cripes they think the inmate is a Rugby ball! Sure, i appreciate the assistance, but they gotta remember, piling up on someone blindly hurts your partners!!! Escpecially since most of my co-workers are 2plus...i'm only about a buck 50!

Aloha Joe,
Yes, we have the authority to initiate a 23hr. lockdown, with one hour of out of cell time. However, try finding a supervisor with the guts to do that here...no way. Example being after a fire was set at two of our main units, when all was said and done, our Captain goes on the MP Floor and "asks" the inmates for their cooperation, after that, everything was run as if nothing ever happened. Staff got hurt that day...some even hospitalized trying to save inmates. My dear Lt. died from the stress of it a short time afterwards... :(
Yes, we could run things better had we the means and the backing to do so. We just need a COS to have the guts to know when to tell the warden, "Look, this is a security issue and I will handle it." *sigh*...
Thanks Joe, and God bless you too.

Aloha Scott,
Well, I have been instructed by my supervisors to WAIT for adequate back up before trying to break up a fight. However...
Back-up sometimes takes forever to arrive. Now, if an inmate gets seriously injured, Internal Affairs steps in and asks, "Why didn't you stop the fight?"...Now, doing it my way, yes, I get banged up, but there is no further injury to either inmate involved. Now the higher ups say, "Why did you not wait for backup?"

Aloha buddy,
Already answered this one. However, I do have a cool billy club that the UK guards get to carry... ;)
Hope your job is going well. God bless

wouldn't it be easier to just keep bouncing his skull off the cement, at least you only have to file paperwork on that inmate one last time. :p
I agree, invest in some good kneepads and a vest. Well worth it in your line of work.
Have to admit though, they won't try pulling anything with you in a while after another demonstration like that. As long as you keep taking down the alpha's, the rest co-operate until another one grows a pair and tries again.
Aloha Terminator Bunny,
Uh true, true, and true! :D
God bless and take CARE!

God bless!
Aloha JimD,
Thank you brother...same offer applies to you. As for getting "One Up" on you, no way I could do that...you got too much seniority. :D
Take care and 360IJN always

Again, I am Glad Our Lord Kept You Safe (He Never Leaves Us, or Forsakes Us), I am Thankful He also ingrained your SKILL. Prayers Sent Bro.

Aloha ALL,
Okay, my eyes started tweaking from trying to reply to everyone's posts here. :o So thank you TKC, Terry, thombrogan, deeker, zackerty, ghostrider, Axlis, and anyone else I did not mention.
Saturday night: Takedown, right?
Sunday: I report for duty like an idiot and get forced to stay back until this morning. Shoulda stayed home, but nooooooooooooooo... :o
I did stay home today though, and went to see my doctor. He was shocked that I dinged the same knee from an incident almost a year ago, and wants me to get xrayed, skip the MRI, and go see a specialist. Funny because he doesn't even work in Hell, but he was getting PO'd about the whole thing! :D
Oh man though...I hate to be whining, escpecially after what vampyrewolf goes through, but when I woke up from a short nap today...WHOA!!! Felt it in my right knee and right pec also. Left knee down alongside soleus...ow. This is nothing new though...but it doesn't mean I have to like it. :p
I am just glad to be home...
God bless all you guys and mahalo
PS: About the "guns"...I dunno where you guys are getting your info from, but mine are the size of .177BB's! :)

I find muscle relaxants are the only thing that control pain now... otherwise I live with it. Have about 6 flexoral left, nothing like having your body go numb to kill pain(not a feeling you like having).
if you're looking for pain relief tips, find a hot tub and soak till you feel boiled. I make good use of my free student pass into the pools here, if my knee or shoulder is bothering me I soak in the hottub for a good hour, and then dry out in the sauna. Lots of penetrating heat, and I'm usually good for 4-5 days. The jets in the hottub can be used for massage quite nicely.
