I figure on buying one this week and was wondering, which is better steel wise. The navigator is GIN-1 while the dragonfly is in either ATS-55 or AUS-8. Which is better in your opinion? I'm taking about edge retention, rusting, hardness, and the likes. Thanks for the help.

PS- Which do you prefer and why?

I'd pick the navigator 'cos its light, solidly built, good ergos, excellent edge retention and just about everything you'll ever hope for in a small package.. And least I forget : Excellent for air travel too! For a piece of mind, I'll chose the SS dragonfly!

All three are good steels and will serve you well. While ATS-55 is the hardest and thus should hold an edge longest, I am very fond of AUS-8 as I seem to be able to get a better edge on it than any other steel (with the possible exception of VG-10). Check out the "Edge-U-Cation" link above to get an idea how they compare with regards to Carbon content etc.

Of the two knives I prefer the Dragonfly. I really like the performance of its thin, flat ground blade and it seems to fit my hand better than the Navigator. The stainless Dragonfly makes a very elegant and practical "gentleman's" knife. OTOH the Navigator's design might make it more suitable for heavier cutting and it is tip-down whereas both Dragonflies are tip-up. Either way you won't be disappointed, they are both excellent little knives.
