Joyce, does the survey positing on the Military PE and Calypso FRN models information jibe with sales, or does it just mean that forumites prefer flat ground blades for everyday use?

I too am curious as to how this survey compares with actual sales activity.

It's interesting that no one on the Spyderco forum listed the Endura, which is suposedly one of the most popular among the ELU, but the Military was listed twice(a model that I think most ELU would think is too expensive). I guess we really are a 'different' catagory.

Have you noticed we're sort of like lab rats? They test out new ideas and such with the dedicated ELUs. We make most of the purchases, and convert new collecters to our side...

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

Hi Guys!

We were surprised by the preference of plainedges most of you had! The one conclusion we did arrive at as a result of the survey is that all of you are not average knife buyers. This has to be due to experience, education, the fact that most of you are knife savvy to start with.

I think once Sal gets out of meetings he will probably have comments to post as well.

I seem to be an oddity even for here.

I prefer SE blades and aside from the SE Military, none of those are my EDC. I do have some in my collection but not for real use.

Huh? I know there are more dedicated Endura fans out there than that! Strange that a model that is near #1 in sales isn't among the top 10 in forum usage.

I'll be lookin to glasshart for an Endura soon. I love the Native, and have been useing it every day since I got it, but, I have two Endura's that have broken FRN clips to send to the Spydie factory. I will look forward to a new Endura with the steel clip. SE even. Might replace my Native, or get carried -with- the Native. Oh, the two broken Spydies are in Red and OD, and will become part of the seldom to never carried collection (unless they come back with re-spydied-edged's).
Just gonna keep the bug goin!

A lot of us here are users of knives that are kept unusually sharp, as that is our habit. I believe that this situation lends far more usefulness and versatility to the ole' plain edge design than it would perhaps demonstrate otherwise.

Thanks, Ted, I'm only a couple of month here. I only checked the topics from the last 100 days when I signed in, so that's the explanation. Well, I'll dig further and add my opinion to that thread <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

I think the poll is not really a reflection of the majority of owners out there, who probably do not read forums or collect lots of knives. I think I read once that the top sellers for Spyderco are the serrated Delica and Endura models. That might have to do with the fact that most non-knife specific places that sell Spydercos (i.e., outdoor/sporting goods stores, etc.) tend to sell only the fully or partly serrated versions of knives, and even then, I've never seen a Military in one of these stores. Which leads me to believe the survey is not a true reflection of the top sellers.

It seems most top sellers would be influenced by price, utility, and availability for non-knife nuts.

I think the average J.Q. Public type knife buyer buys what looks cool. So, cool looks =&gt; high sales. Knife people buy anything sharp, but we USE what works. Sometimes cool looking knives also perform great, like the Military. Other knives that perform superbly, like the Calypso's, don't really catch the average buyers eye, so they don't really sell that well. Thus we lose out on some truly fine lines sometimes. It's sad because future knife lovers that don't get in when they are available miss out on some super tools.
