View Full Version : Got a left-handed question

I have been using my Dragonfly stainless for several years and have been very happy with it...but I am extremely left-handed and due to the placement of the clip, I have to pull it out of my pocket, open, and then switch hands. Does this model come in a left-handed configuration (clip on the other side)? If not, is it possible to modify? And if that can't happen, are there any other models of similar size? The small blade is just right for me...anything longer could lead to bloodshed!

One solution is to attach a Berkley mini-clip to the lanyard hole and clip it to the top of your pocket with the knife suspended inside.

I'm also left-handed, and have found the now-discontinued Meerkat (but can still be found), to be a excellent "low-profile" EDC. The blade and size is similar to the Dragonfly (think you're stuck with the clip), but the Meerkat has an ambidextrous wire clip. The locking mechanism takes a couple minutes to get used to, but works well once you've got it down. Paid about $25 for mine.

Welcome to the forums tootmed.

There is a fellow forumite called STR, who does a very great job on modifications. Maybe you could contact him.

I have both the Dragonfly and the Meerkat and agree. It is a little convenient for a lefty. I'm pretty well a left when it comes to cutting, but can open with either hand, so it's inconvenient, but not unmanageable. For me, I only use these guys when I need to open a clam pak, or something fairly small, so there's no real urgency either. I actually prefer the Meerkat over the Dragonfly for most smaller tasks. I carry the Dragonfly loose and clip the Meerkat (that may be why :) ) on my right pocket (BM Mini Grip is on the left). The majority of times, I'm using either the Mini-Grip (clipped on my left pocket) or FRN Delica (rides loose in my left pocket), though.

You could try a Mouse, Meerkat, or Poliwog. Those are all ambi and small blades. The Dragonfly is slated for an update, but who knows when that will come and if it will include more carry options. You can always drill holes on the other side to mount the clip. There are various people that can do that mod for you if you don't want to attempt it yourself (I wouldn't know where to begin myself).

STR can do clip conversions if you ask nicely. He's the one who converted my Persian for left handed carry.

You may also choose to carry the knife in your left pocket. It's a little awkward to use, but being left handed, you'll get use to it quickly.

strip off the clip, and either carry loose in your pocket or get a kydex sheath for it(few ppl that can do em).

I'm lucky, natural left, trained to be fully ambidexterous. Still prefer left handed knives but at least I can use right handed ones just as easily.

Mouse and the Poliwog both would cost you around $100. Mouse is nice and light, perhaps even a bit lighter than the D'fly, but hard to find. Poliwog is a brick, I swear the handles are depleted uranium. As Scott said, STR can convert your D'fly to LH carry, which would seem to me the best solution, since you like the Dragonfly.

Aloha and welcome tootmed!

I figured the barrelbolt would have graced the Dragonfly by now...however, that would cause some mods, as well as adding steel liners, etc...The FRN version is one of the sole surviving Integrated FRN clip models. On the SS model however, I wouldn't think it'd be too costly to add lefty holes.

Hey, God bless and take care

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum and enjoy your stay here. I love the SS Dragonfly too.
While drilling a set of extra holes in the SS handles is feasable, I wonder why don't you carry it on the left side. You only need to twist your wrist in order to extract it properly.
I know I do this with my knives I carry on the left side. Most of them were ambidextrous, but I quit reversing the clip as I found I can safely operate the knife just the way it is.

And I do that my whole life, except C10FRN and C52PGY...
I know really what you think! ;)

As a fellow lefty, I dropped the clip on the 'fly entirely and carried it in my backpocket. That was before the SS Kiwi though. :D
I've also become good at retreiving and opening right-handed knives from a lefty carry position with the left hand. From that perspective tip-down spydies seem easier to retrieve.

Ted, ehh.. Wouter.. :D ;) Yes, the tip down is easier to open with the left.
Simply take out, towards the front and open as for the pikal grip.

As a Lefty myself, I've found the ami clip on the Dodo very good, even though it is a wire type. Get a Dodo while you can.
