I think it's officially a classic! It pulled in almost  $230  on the bay! I thought I had it with a pretty high bid yesterday. Woke up to read my email, and I was outbid. I figured I'd check out what the bid was, and to my suprise, $182  and change! Oh well, I still got a Chinook I NIB for $86.00, so I can't complain. I am glad to see the Ayoob is getting it's recognition, but $230  WOW!

Hey BN, did JDSpydo take over your brain? This is exactly the type of thread I would expect him to start...in fact I thought he would when I saw that Ayoob go for 2 Benjamins and change. :p Only a matter of time for the Persian to go this route...cancelled before its time... :(

LOL :D I think he's starting to!

I agree with you on that Persian, it died way before it's time!

I was watching that auction, as well as the rest of the items that seller had.

I cannot figure out for the life of me why they commanded such high prices. Sure they're all great knives, but the Ayoob in particular can be had for $120 on a regular basis. I should have held onto mine longer, I could have really cashed in.

Seller made a killing though, I never have that kind of luck on Ebay, I think I'm just jealous. ;)

Nope, not gonna happen, and I'll tell you why. Because I have several of them ;) I bought several for future projects, in case they got expensive later, and I have such bad luck with that, I'm sure they'll go DOWN in price, and I'll be left looking like a moron :p

That one was listed as having G-10 scales. Were there many made in G-10? Maybe that is why it went for more?

Lol, your glass is half full not half empty bud. You gotta have faith Scott! Everyone I've shown the persian goes "wow! I really like that handle!" I think it is a fair better overall knife than the Ayoob.

If you are hoping for a quick buck, buy Las Vegas Property, but if you can hold out, I'm sure the Persian will reach that "Classic" status. Remember there stands to be a whole slew of Walmarters that will be turned onto Spydercos, not all of them are penny pinchers. I shop at Walmart and I just ordered two Police necklaces "just to see if it would work". ;)

Hey, it's worth a shot! :D

I have no bones to pick with the Persian model. I own one. But I maintain that I like the ergos and blade configuation on the Ayoob much better. My opinion to which I am entitled. One thing that Zen and Scott definitely bring to light is that not everyone's hand will grace the Ayoob and find it to their liking.

The Ayoob design is really ahead of it's time. I just don't think at the time it came out that anyone was ready for such a "non-conventional" knife like the Ayoob. It is one of the Spyders you either love or hate. Me, Blackninja, Doctor Lecter and a couple of other Spyder brothers are among the few that do indeed like it. I actually started this thread hoping to find out who else here on the Forum appreciated it. But unfortunately a lot of people dislike it.

I will concede that G-10 would have been a better handle selection for the Ayoob and I hope MR. Glesser is seriously thinking about a sprint run with different handle material and different blade steel. That's what's great about this Forum. We can truly agree to disagree without it getting ugly. Ayoob in G-10 & D-2 blade steel>> bring it on!!

Brain Takeover? Am I being accused of witchcraft, mind control or being an operative in the MK-Ultra project  ? And if I did start a thread similar to the one Blackninja started then what would be wrong with that  ? Hmmm  ? Or could it be that we got good people appreciating good knives that I coincidentally happen to like? IF I like it then it ain't no good :( ?

Actually this is probably poetic Deja Vu in a sense. I remember the first time that I ever laid eyes on a Spyderco Shabaria. I thought it was the uuugggliiiesst knife I ever saw. But I challenged myself to get one and give it an honest and thorough evaluation. While doing that it really lit up a bulb inside of me. Mr. Bradichansky I discovered was an engineering genius. That knife which I used to think was an extreme oddity has now become one of my all time favorite Spyders. By using and carrying one I soon seen that it's design was solely based on "function". If people would give the Ayoob a chance they might just discover that the Ayoob was a knife designed to fulfill certain purposes. Genius designs are sometimes hard to understand and accept. I know I was in the same mindset but sometimes you got to dig a bit deeper. And Blackninja certainly did ;) :spyder:

Than someone is in for a rude awakening, because there was never a G-10 Ayoob.

I gotta say though, the Persian and the Ayoob are both GREAT knives. The Ayoob was an EDC for quite a while til I finally let it go :( The Ayoob seems to me the more SD ready knife, while the Persian is much classier.

Though the blade shapes are nearly identical at a glance. Open a Persian half way and you have what looks like an bolstered micarta Ayoob ;)

Both are extremely comfortable in the hand though. I prefer the size of the Ayoob's handle, but the curves and choil in the Persian fit my hand better.

How about a combination of both, a slightly larger Persian handle with the negative blade angle of the Ayoob. :D

Not gonna happen, but hey, it was a cool idea

Definetely G-10 or........ the new Caebon Fiber! ;) I love it on the Millie, it's so "grippy!" Cost would probably be a factor with the latter, but I would buy at least two!
For steel, I like the SE better than the PE on this particular model (like the Police \ Rookie to name a feww) VG -10 would work for me, (as well as ATS-55, which I think is no longer used...) I don't know how ZDP holds up with serrations (maybe someone can chime in.....hint..... hint..... ;) but if they do, that would be my 1st choice! Second; What the great :spyder: factory has up their sleeve! :spyder: ;) :spyder:

Sticking with almite? Something in green would be cool. Though textured micarta would be my preference, to add some grip to it.

Hey now! My comments were tongue-in-cheek only. I own both common forms of this model. I've been reading Ayoob gun knowledge since the 80's and his tactics are sound. The Ayoob is like the Civilian except designed for those of the thrusting school over the slashing school for non knife people fighting a last ditch fight to retain their primary sidearm. Personally I hope it fades back into obscurity and that this purchase was an aberration...I would like a few backups so I can carry one edc.

Actually Zen,
I LOVE SD knives and this one is for stabing and slashing! With the latter having advantages over most knives becauce of it's uniquely angled blade.
IMO, this knife is better for slashing rather than stabing.

Jd's not taking over my brain, he's just on the same "wave length" as I am!

Ha I knew someone would comment on the slashing part! Since we both put forth it does the opposite rather well, then it must do of them both really well!

Damn I should have bid $300! genius!

green textured micarta then

I'm all over it. :D

I'm gonna have to agree with both of you on the slashing/thrusting part. The blade angle makes both of them intuitive. The tip is perfectly in line for a thrust already, and no wrist angle is necessary, which allows the whole forearm to align with the tip better, and provides more strength during a thrust.

On the other hand, there is no wrist realignment need for a slash either, and the blade pretty much leans into whatever you're cutting.

You're both right, and I want another Ayoob, I'm missing mine now :(

No Zen my comeback was meant to be somewhat comical too :) . You know me better than that. Trust me I'm not going to get my skirt blowed up over someone's like or dislike of a pocketknife :D. I actually think it's kind of neat to be challenged about why you prefer something. My whole point is that looks are incredibly deceiving. You wouldn't believe the amount of "Crow" I had to eat over that Shabaria. But I got to admit when I'm wrong about something and I was sure wrong about that design. I wish now that I had 6 of those Shabarias. But when I first encountered one I wouldn't at that time given a $5 bill for one. Man was I wrong about that one. And I do believe that the Ayoob is seriously misunderstood from that standpoint.

I'll be the first to agree that my tastes in blades is sometimes unorthadox compared to the Spyder community by and large. Actually I learn more from disagreements than I do from preaching to choir. But I meant every word I said about my comparison to my take on the Shabaria which somewhat is parallel to people's perception of the Ayoob. I even bought one on a dare more or less. The Ayoob is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. I don't think that Massad Ayoob even ever expected that to happen. Let's face it we all have our own predilections toward certain knife makers/designers. I have a buddy who is one of my very best friends who literally hates the Bob Lum knives. But that's what's cool about the Great Spyder factory. There is truly something for everybody in their line up. Peace my friend :) . I didn't take yours too seriously and didn't expect you to take my comments to heart either.

There are just so many Spyders you have to actually use to see what the designer had in mind. I think with the first run of the Ayoobs I would have liked a more grippy handle material for sure. But the overall design to me is superlative. :) Bottom line of what I am saying is that the Ayoob along with many other misunderstood Spyders need to be checked out thoroughly before you dismiss them as un-favorable. :)

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum :) . The rules here on the Forum pretty much forbid buying, selling or trading knives. Most of us here that like to buy, sell and trade go over to Bladeforums.com

It's easy to join. I think for about $25 a year you can get a GOLD membership which will allow you to do a lot of trading, buying and selling.

We look forward to your participation here on this Forum :)

Don't worry about it, most of us make the same mistake at least once. ;)

Your best bets on finding one are over on Bladeforums or Ebay, but I haven't seen one on either for a while now. Good luck.

And welcome to the forum.
