View Full Version : You can just call me a criminal.

Just had to share this one ... city council is proposing a ban on ALL knives other than those required by work.... Not even just a length limit or locking ones... but all.

Welcome to Gattica State. Where the next thing they'll do is tell you you're wiping your @ss wrong.

Call me a criminal, but I could care less if they want to ban knives. What is it? 2% of stabbing are done with a folding knife, 90% with a kitchen knife and the other 8% screwdrivers... trying to think of the paper on weapon control I did in grade 12 history.

Soon, they're going to burn books, as a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. And I thought humanity was improving

edit: gimme a sec and I'll put a copy of the article on my space

Good grief. That does seem a little extreme. What prompted them to do it?

Thats the way politicians ''solve problems'', specialy when they want to show the public how good they are in making bold decisions without any knowledge on the subject. Quite common.
Btw, hold on to your catalogs. You might need them when you have to go underground resistance.

edit: though if you consider it, I've been living with a criminal since the firearm registry came out .... when hell freezes over we MIGHT consider registering them, but until that point the politicians can't dig thier heads out of thier lower recepticals enough to see how sh|t stained the idea is to make responsible citizens liable for criminal acts(ex: someone breaks into your house, finds the guns... if they're registered you are now liable for ANY crime commited with it)

Is this a reaction on their part to a specific event? Or is it an election year there and everybody needs to look like they're doing something about something? Have no idea how things are in Canada, but here in the states the "good news" would be that city ordinances only apply within city limits, penalties are generally just fines, and convictions don't mean much when applying for a job.

Mind you, I agree that it, like most weapons laws, is a stupid idea, if for no other reason than because, as you already observed, most stabbings and slashing do not involve folding knives. Kitchen knives, scissors, screwdrivers, letter openers, ice picks, and garden tools are far more likely to be the weapon of choice.

Yep, it's an election year up here for both Canadian gov't and local mayor... At least getting the conservatives in power will help somewhat(they want to remove all funding from the gun registry and scrap it)....

in 03 saskatoon was the crime capitol of canada, with the most murders per capita(15 himicides for 205K pop)... but they also have to consider that for the roughly 1mil ppl in the province, they have just over 1K gang members, or roughly 1:900 ppl. Lets see... 205K/900ppl... 227 gang members in the city... 15 homicides is nothing.

 I don't understand why politicians believe putting a ban on knives, or putting a legal carry limit on them will reduce crime rates, it will not change anything. If a person is corrupt and stupid enough to commit the crime, he is going to do it regardless of law and with whatever weapon he or she can obtain. Not a very posistive out look I know, but these laws just hurt US while the badguys are still out there hurting others.

Their way of thinking is like cutting of a person's head to cure a headache.

If they keep going, they'll be able to arrest and jail someone for moving too fast

Doesn't matter that humanity has been using knives for a few millenia, we're gonna ban em.

All depends if they get this thing passed, I can get arrested for owning, never mind carrying a knife.... see how far that flies when it gets to court, considering the lawyer I have playing for my side(think 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin in a suit, only the lawyer doesn't play well with others :p).

VW, "Call me a criminal, but I could care less if they want to ban knives." I would call them "criminals". I suppose their excuse is to protect everyone from terrorists? First guns, now knives. :(

My sympathies. I left a state (California) that had oppressive weapons laws, it was one reason why I moved. It DOES allow carry of folding knives but bans for ownership or carry darn near everything else. No-saps, metal kubotans, blackjacks, batons, knucks, sjamboks, a check at their infamous penal code section 12010 lists all kinds of things. You can even get in trouble there for having a tire iron or baseball bat on your back seat. Or carrying a non folding knife. The laws in California truly suck.

VW, that really sucks.

Is this a guaranteed thing? Or is this still in the debate phase(meaning it can be prevented). or is it practically set in stone?

This is just bizarre. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I just despise all government (and corporate) efforts to reduce individual freedom. Here in the US, both main political parties seem to have some agenda to diminish freedom in a way that speaks to some prejudice of their core of supporters.

Does Canada have some equivalent of the NRA?

WOW!
Sorry VW!
God forbid but, wouldn't he think twice if he or a loved one were trapped in a vehicle that was going to explode or in water and the seat belt was jammed and the most practical, possibly only way out was by cutting the seat belt with a knife. I know that would probably (hopefully never) ever happen, but think of the irony!

i wonder, where all the housewifes and houseman obtain now their knives? order them from ebay? omg..

BTW, a friend of mine was stabbed some time ago, in her case it was a bread knife. ban all bread knives then? they're bad!!!

Ide think a all polymer spyderco would be a better idea.

Rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6

I truly feel for you, sir. That sucks!

I agree with you; I'd not stop carrying knives, nor owning them. Screw it. There comes a time and place when you simply have to say, "Enough!".

I'll follow idiotic laws to an extent, but when it gets to the point in the article, those laws need to be ignored by everyone.

I've sent a PM to both Sal and Kristi, asking for any help they could send in the way of files or info... plan to drop off a folder of stuff at city council. SO FAR it's just a proposal, 90% of which fail at the vote.... hopefully it's one of those 90%.

Can't hurt to edge-ucate them though before it gets to a vote(if it even does).

That really stinks. I hope it does not get passed!!

That's the modern way of handling crime: outlaw the instruments used in the commission of crimes and the crimes will stop. You know, outlaw guns and no one will ever be killed by a gun again. Outlaw knives, and no one will ever be stabbed again. Outlaw leatherman minitools and no one will ever hijack a plane again.

Modern societies are all backwards. BEHAVIOR causes crimes, PEOPLE commit crimes, instruments are USED. You can outlaw and restrict the instruments all you want, but criminals will find new instruments, or more likely still use the old ones. Like the old saying goes, if you outlaw guns only the outlaws will have guns.

If you want to stop crimes, PUNISH THE PERPETRATORS, instead of slapping them on the wrist. Societies without consequences enforced for breaking laws are doomed.

Just my two cents worth. :)

Under the city council's theory, writing instruments (pens, pencils, printers) misspell words. If we'd just outlaw all these instruments, no one could ever misspell another word again!

I have Carried some sort of edged tool (knife) for 35 years and have never had an issue with the law. Though I have needed to use one several times in bad situations. As for the governing body where ever you may live deciding what type of utility/tool can own or carry is unconstitutional. Sorry to hear this story...

Sorry to hear about your troubles, VW. I hope that things work out in your favor, as well as for all your fellow law abiding Canadians. I'm sure that Sal will try and help in any way that he can. ;)

Good Luck!!
