View Full Version : burgundy micarta jester stamina?
so i've been thinking of putting one of my burgundy micarta jesters on my keychain for awhile now but just can't seem to bring myself to do it. :( you know getting knocked around all the time in between all those rough keys. plus it can get -40 celsius up here in the winter and +35 celsius in the summer. so my question is how will it hold up under this type of regular edc and exposure? (i know the deacon has one he carries...)

Up till now I really haven't taken any of the Ladybugs or Jesters very seriously at all. Until I aquired a Burgundy Micarta Jester in a trade. Then shortly thereafter a lady friend of mine got a Carbon Fiber Ladybug. Having REAL handles on these little knives makes them completely different. I will probably end up keeping my Burgundy Micarta Jester. I have even given some consideration to trying out a stainless handled Jester. Who else but the Great Spyder Factory would have really little knives like these with the quality they have. :spyder:

This first shot was taken back in early December, shows what my key ring looks like. It's as light as it's ever been, at various time over the past couple years there has been quite a bit more junk on it. Jester has been on it for almost twenty nine months now.

These are close ups of the Jester, taken a week or two ago.

Has anyone ever use it in rough environment?
I really would like to know if this little can take up the abuse in the real life EDC situation. Similarly Benchmade Benchmite I, I know that someone use it to finish a deer without resharpen it. So the question is, Jester or Ladybug would be able to do something similar to that>
I recently feel the SS Jester in PE. It is quite strong n feeling. The finish is supurb. But do not know about the edge quality and their retention.
Anyway, I also would like to get the micarta version for my collection as well.

Bouncing around in pockets, hanging from the ignition switch of my car, tossed in trays at places with metal detectors a couple dozen times and dropped on concrete and asphalt a few. Other than that, it has led a sheltered life. It does not get used a lot, since I almost always have something larger with me as well. Blade steel on all versions of the Jester is AUS-6. It is a quality steel, takes a great edge and holds it well, but not as well as VG-10 or S30V. On the other hand, it sharpens much easier than either of them, so in the long run everything evens out.

After seeing all these pix of the micarta Jester, I have to say I hope Sall decides to make another run of the burgunday micarta... one of my favorite colors on a great keyring knife!!!
Dare to dream.

I really agreed with you. I wish Sal can have some sprint run for the burgundy micarta or even CF and some other blade material as well. That would really bring this knife to the top desired list.
For me, I spent most of my time in office and city. I think small knife like Jester has the most use. And even in the camping/hiking trip, I think Jester handle just fine for most of the jobs (of course, not chopping woods, though) with a bit inconvenient.
So making them in better steel would gain their utility a lot.
jeez deacon, i guess your pics say it all. i guess i don't have to worry bout that jester holdin up. thanks a million to you all! :)

Deacon, can you give us some more picture of yours? I would like to see when the knife is open and in your hand. That might give me the feel of the relative size of the knife.

Yes, that would be a good idea...
And to see what it looks like after nearlu 4 years of use...
I got one coming my way....
(Thanks again RLR)

SimonBit dark here right now, but will take some this weekend. Still looks great, by the way.
Congrats on your win Simon! I must admit I thought about defecting to Canada to be eligible for that contest. :o :D

I've carried my burgundy Jester together with a JIL CR2 flashlight on quite a few occasions. The Jester does attract scratches and dings a bit easier than FRN. However, micarta can be brought back with a little copper polish and WD40 (twas all I had around at the time and it did the trick).

When the true Jester was discontinued, I took my Micarta Jester out of the safe and have been carrying it every key day since. Other than looking a bit thirsty, the Micarta on mine looks great.

Had some decent light today, so here are some shots of the one that has spent going on 4.5 years on my key ring. First a shot with it's "playmates", you will notice that some of them are capable of playing a bit rough...

...and a couple closeups of the little guy. A few minor dings, but not bad considering I've dropped the ring more than a few times on asphalt and at least two or three on concrete. The small white dots are just dust, evidence of my lousy housekeeping, but nothing more. ;)

I'd guess FRN would show even less damage, but would probably look grubby. Matte or shiny CF would probably look about the same. I'd expect textured CF or G-10 would have some smooth spots by now, plus collecting some gunk in the valleys. But am sure metal would have fared the worst, I figure Almite coated aluminum, titanium, or stainless steel would all look pretty thoroughly beat up.
