View Full Version : Renegade rebirth?
Sal or anyone who knows,
I was wondering whatever happened to plans to bring back the Renegade? Last I remember, it was pulled from production for 'redesigns/improvements', will it ever make it back to us? Even as a sprint run with upgraded steel and Boye cutout would be fantastic. This model IMO was the first really 'sexy' Spyderco and I still love the design.
Please tell me this hasn't fallen off the board. If the Renegade isn't slated to come back, how does it look for the large G-10 Native(Pride)? Still possible or fallen off as well?
Thanks,
Ken

Never heard about this "Pride", Ken. How far back does one need to search to find some threads about it?
Have only seen a couple pictures of the Renegade, and they were interesting. As you say, a very sexy design. Well, the Native may not be too sexy, but it sure is a good knife. I'd be quite interested in a larger, G-10 model. Would love to read about it on old threads. I'll try search here.

The links to the pix don't work any longer so here are a couple that do.

Thanks for the links/pictures Chinook, seeing those images again just get me even more fired up about it. It would make an excellent companion piece to the Military, Police and Starmate models, that isn't a 'jr.' but a peer.

First time I see a picture of the Native Pride, and I'm already in love. If it ever gets made, I'll buy it - period!

That Native Pride looks like an excellent design.
But whats that in the middle of the second picture that looks like a stone age skinning tool ????
I believe that is the ULU prototype, to function similarly to the alaskan Ulu, but with a retactable blade(2 position, if I remember right). G-10 handle. Can't remember much else. I don't think it got a whole lot of enthusiasm, but I could be wrong.

Chinook,
Would it be possible for you to email those pictures to me. I used to have them but had a rush of blood to the head at some stage and deleted them. I saved them from your link but I would rather have them as a jpeg than HTML.
TIA

Clay...
I'll do even better. I'll tell you how I stole them. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
When you see the picture on your screen, it has actually been dowenloaded to your computer and resides in a temporary directory somewhere on your computer. All the little pictures and logos you see on these pages are actually pix that are in these temp directories. You can browse these directories and see these .jpgs and .gifs with a viewer. So you actually have the pix already on your computer, somewhere. Finding them is the problem.
Butt you don't need to search, if you want to save a pic to another place where you can find it, just right-click on it while it is onscreen and select; "save picture as" and save it as a .jpg
This assumes you are using Windows, I don't know the process for other platforms. If you have problems let me know. Also the pix in here are limited to 400x400 in size and that is all you will get when you save it from screen. Mine are usually much bigger. And I'd be happy to send the larger version. These two happen to be links to the large versions so they are exactly like the ones I have in my collection.
good luck
let me know if you get them

If you are on a Mac, just click and drag the picture off the browser screen to the desktop and then you should see the JPG or GIF icon on your desktop.

There is no doubt that I try to monitor too many forums. I also post way too much. I'm really embarrassed Chinook, that I didn't remember to go back and see if anyone answered my question(s). Thank you very much. The thread link didn't work, but I can search over there as well as you. The picture links were great.
While I'm not so fond of handles that get smaller towards the butt, I still think that I would probably cheerfully buy the Pride, were it released. I love the shape of the blade, and the fore part of the handle. Looks like an excellent knife to me. Might give my Wegner a real run for my affections.
I sure wish I could get a Calypso Jr in that maroon/dark red. Looks great. Sometimes I feel that if I never again saw a black FRN handle I'd get by just fine. Saw a picture of the Snap-It in red in AG Russell's catalogue, and seriously considered buying it, until I paid attention to the interference with the blade posed by the snap part.
Thanks, Chinook!

Do you know what the dimensions of the Pride are. I am curious as to know how big it is?

That search link doesn't work for me either now. That is strange as I tested the links after I posted that. Probably because Spark reorganized/renamed the forums since then.
I forget the particulars on the maroon/green Calypso Jr Ltwt availability. I seem to remember a small number were available, maybe to forum members. (hell to get old) I too would love to get one of the maroon (micarta preferably).

Chinook,
I believe the maroon Calypso Jr was only a prototype. Being the trouble maker that I am <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> I hassled Sal and Michelle for a while to see if they would do a production run, but it doesn't seem as though sales of the Calypso warrant it at this stage. Who knows, maybe coloured scales is just what the Calypso needs to find its niche in the market.
I too would love a burgundy micarta Calypso Jr but I'd go for an ivory one even more (with VG-10 blade of course). Add some scrimshaw and there's a knife to leave to the grandkids <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>.
BTW thanks for the pictures. I still find I can only get them from the screen as HTML and haven't been able to find a way to convert them. Makes it hard to send them on by email.

Hi Ken. Sorry to be so ong in getting to this. We have found some parts of the Renegade and Blackhawk. We are going to finish them and release them some time this year.
The Native "Pride" will not likely be made. The Renegade/Blackhawk were the predecessor to the Native, so there is certainly a resemblance. The Re-intro Renegades are black G10.
The Ulu is scheduled for next year in FRN, about 75% the size of the prototypes. Cutting edge length is about 3". Not bad for a blade that is only 1/2" long.
sal
Thanks for the udate Sal, I know your are very busy(probably one of the most active CEO's in the industry). Your time is much appreciated.
Fantastic news on the last of the Renegades! I'm ready and waiting for them. Please keep us updated on their release status.
Thanks,
Ken

How long is the blade on the Renegade, and also does it have more belly than the Chinook?

The blade on the Renegade I just got off ebay is just a hair under 4", unbelievable dagger point and a solid feel to the knife.
As much belly as a Chinook? Are you making fun of me??? <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
Here is a pic for comparison, not near as much as the Chinook.

I don't think I can describe my face as my jaw dropped below my knees when I saw the pics Chinook posted.
I am in dire need of a Pride/Renegade (whatever) and THAT BOXCUTTER THING! OMG, what is that????
Sal, please, keep us posted on these pointy developments. I have now added a third knife to my immediate purchase list (immediate, as in the next 5 months):
1. Viele
2. Ayoob
3. Pride/Renegade (the one in the pic, darn it!)
4. Ok, also that "boxcutter implement"

Is it me, or does the Chinook look like a stretched renegade, although the Renegade is much older?

You can bet I will pick up a renegade and a blackhawk. Does the renegade remind anyone else of a baby Chinook?

Anu update?
I just received a sample of the reborn Renegade and Blackhawk models. Very nice.
A few minor changes from the original version;
The "cut out" in the handle to access the opening now is cut out on both front scale (as before) and the back scale.
There is a single stainless liner for the clip screws. I think the fit, finish and general quality are better.
They should be available shortly.

Will this be a short run or will they be joining the line up permenately? Will regular dealers get them or should I call SFO to reserve one?

I will be in for a plainedged Blackhawk. I was contemplating making that same handle modification to my Renegade. The clipside G10 slab can be rather sharp when used hard, and I find myself trying to actuate the nonexistant linerlock. ><g>
The new mods should make for strong comfortable users.

Will it have the David Boye Dent?
Also, would it be possible to put one in my Police If I sent it in?
Edited by - Knife Knut on 11/20/2001 7:08:13 PM
Sal, those specs sound great! My only concern is the added weight of the liner. I know this offers extra strength, but I thought the original without the liners were plenty strong and very slim and fast in the hand. I hope these qualities weren't sacrificed.
Regarless, please keep the forum informed as to their release time and place, I'm betting they'll move out at a quick pace.
Ken
Dealers should be able to get them.
No David Boye indent.
The single liner doesn't add much weight, but does provide for a stronger fastening of the clip screws.

My brother has on older Renegade and loves it. I think it is an excellent design, and cannot wait until the updated version comes out. Hail the Renegade! <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
