she's not really into carrying a knife like i am, but i would like to get her a knife for her purse. i know she'd like the blue so i want to get the Yojimbo or Dodo for her, i know she'd think the dodo was cute and all but would the yojimbo serve better if she wanted to cut up food in a lunch opening a letter or whatever? and which one would serve as a last resort self defense knife? the dodo looks like a slash only movement where the yojimbo could be slash or stab?

thanks

:spyder: Giving a woman who isn't interested in learning how to use it defensively isn't a great idea, same as giving an untrained person a gun. For food prep neither will win awards, go with a stretch. :spyder:

A Calypso Jr. might work, too...I gave my wife a Grey FRN Caly Jr. last year, and she uses it at work a lot. Now that she has one, she's learning to appreciate the utility of a good knife!

My wife, who trained for about three years, and still practices, carries a Native, but practices with a Delica drone. Either knife might work for your wife.

For an alternative point of view, Graciela Casillas-Boggs, see:

favors a hawkbill, says that it is easier for women to use. She is certainly a competent martial artist. She designed the LadyHawk, which can be see on the cover of Blade magazine on the web site.

I don't like giving up working with the point, and some hawkbills are really wide when closed, and hard to carry, but that's just personal preference.

If your wife isn't really into carrying knives I doubt the Yojimbo will make it into her purse and see much use if any. The Dodo may be a better choice but for general utility a yellow Salt for instance may be a better option.
I am not sure the design of a knife makes much difference in a SD situation if the knife is in a purse in the first place. Being able and willing to defend yourself is far more important then the object used if any.

My wife likes her blue Dodo because it is a great utility knife and works for what she does most - opening things (blister paks, parcels, etc.) in conjunction with her quilting hobby. She has a permit to carry, so knife fights are rare. :D
Not bad for a grandma.

I agre with Michael Cook, but if pressed, I'd say a Yojimbo. You can do more with it other than SD situations. Try peeling an apple with a Dodo.

Aloha marshall,

I agree with Mr. Cook and Mr. Breuker completely.

I say to go with a Pacific or Salt I yellow. I know she likes "blue" and all...However, I am sure the Yellow could win her over, and the H1 series are pretty much maintenance free! :D

God bless and choose wisely...

For the wife ... oh come on ... Get her one of the new PE Delicas ... Great price, safer blade, .. and it will peel an apple .. :D easily.

Well then pick the knife you really want...after a month of her not carrying it you can say "well somebody better put this to use" ;)

(Of your two choices, the Yojimbo would be better for food prep.)

Don't buy your wife a knife for her purse and hope that she'll be able to dig into her purse and obtain it should she need a self-protection implement. If she would carry the knife in a pocket or her waistband, it could make a quickly-deployed implement. For self-protection, a Kahr or Glock with an IWB holster, a new wardrobe to comfortably conceal said firearm, and more hours of training than she'll ever let you live down is a better choice. There are several other non-weapon/non-tool choices for enhancing self-protection as well.

Get the Dodo because it's super useful and cute as heck whereas the Yojimbo is super useful, but funny looking.
