Bitten by a Spyder

Well it had to happen, I finally got blooded by a Spydie.

I've only ever been bitten by knives maybe 6/7 times in my life, and never by a Spydie. Well, this morning my G-10 Civilian arrived (complete with clam pouch - nice), and even though I was late for work I couldn't resist giving it a look over. My normal method of closing a lock-back is to press the lock, lightly flick the wrist so that blade swings over and is stopped by the large unsharpened area behind the cutting edge (tang ?) coming to rest on the pointer finger.



I found out the hard way that the Civilian's lock is so far down the handle that the unsharpened area doesn't easily come into contact with the pointer finger.



Gently lifting the blade off the top of my finger I inspected the lightly throbbing digit. Strange, even though I know I have cut myself, there is no sign of a cut, not even a hairline scratch. I watch the area, it's going to start bleeding any second now ... any second .... Nothing. I wait a little longer, then bend the finger ..... there was blood everywhere.



Damn, this thing is sharp <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>



No matter what time I am out of bed and moving, I am never awake before 10.00am.

Hey, hope the cut wasn't too bad. Cuts from Spydies always heal fast due to the extreme keenness of the blade.

All you did when it started bleeding was tear open the thin membrane of flesh remaining after the Spydernip.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

those reverse S blades can be nasty. I still remember my cricket biting me back in march.
Had my hand in the normaly cutting postion, hit liner lock, closing blade to 90 degrees, moved middle finger wrong, and cut the side of my finger. small cut, but deep with serrations, lots of blood.

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

I once trapped my middle finger between the handle and edge of my new police. That was fun.

Nah worries.
I was too impressed with the sharpness of the blade to worry about any scratch I got.

I can relate to your story. Three months ago got three stitches from a delica, first knife cut in a long while. Well I thought, if u play with fire long enough you'll get burned. Got a new harpy at SFO last week, and I got myself again. Not bad but spyder bites do bleed. Great stuff these spyder blades. Good thing I know how to suture...;}

'Why don't you scan in the wound next time you get another one? I think that would give the beginning spyderco users a good warning to be extremely carefull with the companie's knifes... And it's nice to see. Isn't it? Allows me more to give you more sympathy.

That's the thing with spyder bites, they're so clean the two halves go back all but seamlessly. It would never show up on a scan.

But tell me, when I get my own spyderco Harpy, is it wise to test it on myself, or do you think the cut would be accidently TOO deep?

testing your knife on yourself probably isn't the smartest thing to do. Although whats really neat is when you first get the knife it's so sharp you can shave with it!

Heh heh, I wouldn't like to think how much arm hair I have lost testing a newly shapened knife ;-))

I have armhair? My Arms have been bare as a nuclear testing ground for the last 2 yrs.
