View Full Version : Harpy, thin as a rod?

Since I now own the Hannibal DVD I've been seeing that scene over and over again, where Hannibal takes out his knife and uses it.

Now, when he wipes the blood off his own face (just a few drops) right after he killed Carlo's brother, you get a little view on the knife. It doesn't look like a big knife at all. The blade itself is, but the grip ain't. It's small and thin. Is that right on a Harpy, or is it custom made? It does look friggin' good.

I don't know if you understand what I mean. Grip? Hope you understand me, that's where my English ends.

Anyway, does anyone have a picture of that knife and know the answer on that? Plz?

Here you go.
I've not seen the film, but here are the two knives that appear in the book.
The Harpy is the one on the right and is the one Hannibal used on Carlo's brother. The one on the right is the Civilian that Hanibal bought along with his replacment Harpy when he got back to America.

The SS Harpy is 7mm wide (not inc clip), and the G-10 Civillian is 10mm wide (not inc clip)

Hope this helps.

Ya helped me allright, but God damnit, the Harpy is serrated. I heard Spyderco used to make non-serrated Harpy, but not anymore.

You know where I can buy a non-serrated, or at least get a picture?

The Merlin is the equivalent of the Harpy except that it has an FRN handle. It also comes in either plain edge or Spyder edge.
Sorry don't have a picture.

Try www.knifecenter.com they might have one or at least a photograph.

Am getting frustrated. Just spent quite a bit of time looking at many web vendors, looking for a pic of a non-serrated Merlin or Harpy. Totally fruitless. A few days ago, spent even longer looking for a pic of the Lum Chinese with a serrated edge. Nada.

Am beginning to believe that Spyderco simply does not provide wholesalers or vendors with pictures of all significant variations on their knives.

I know I've seen a picture of a plain edged Harpy or Merlin, but not at all convinced that it was on a vendor site.

Seems to me, that if a company is going to offer significantly different options, that they ought to provide pictures of the options, to help their customers make a more informed choice.

Sorry -- I usually am full of praise for Spyderco, but have to admit that this aspect of their way of doing things is frustrating.

I suspect (guessing) that Spyderco may have only had a limited run of plain-edged Harpys, thus the difficulty of finding images of them(?).

When I hold my SS Harpy in the position I saw Lecter holding it in the movie, mine looks very thin, too. But all the SS models are thinner than most other handle materials.

I couldn't tell if the Harpy in the movie was plain-edge or not, as I couldn't get a clear enough view of it. In the book, the Harpy is serrated. Later in the book, at a gun show (not seen in the movie), Lecter buys "a serrated Spyderco and a Civilian." It seems besides the Civilian and Harpy, Lecter had also purchased an unnamed 3rd Spydie knife.

I thought this post was about the Spyderco Harpy.

I want to ask you people a question. Has any Harpy user every used it for self defence?

Just to scare the enemy off, or even cut him a little?

I have a harpy and 3 others models and i never use this for self def. but i allways carry 2 spydies(often on this comfiguration:right hand Harpy left hand calypso Frn pe i think the Harpy is a good self def. knife also in reverse grip which i love.

Yes, well it would definetly work well for self defence. Only the way it looks would scare people off. But then I think the Civillian would also scare people off because of it's long blade and the small 'hook' at the end.

You are right. James' scans don't belong in 'your' thread. And neither do I.
