View Full Version : Amsterdam Meet 2006 Knives & Pictures !
OK here it is. The list of prototypes and concept models, and if possible with pics. All proto's with pic should be available with 6 months or so, but well, you know, some might slip ...
For availability, it's best to wait for the official announcement from Spyderco, before calling your dealer.
The show was awesome. Still amazed that Spyderco's takes the time and effort to do this. Thanks much to Sal, Eric, Jack, Jurphaas and Ed for arranging everything. And thanks much for the goodies! There were some interesting ideas for the show for next year!
KOPA
Pearl & Turquoise. Very bling-bling-bling!
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/kopa.jpg
CO-PILOT
Spyderco's first little big knife - sprint run of 1200. Almite coated aluminum. VG-10 steel. Nice clip. A modern classic. Now with torx screws. Forgot to take a picture...will do that at the IWA
SPIN
Eric's two-finger knife design for a special occastion ;)
There were two concept coatings which looked good but will make it more expensive. My point with them is that I wouldn't mind the extra costs, as long as the coating would be on both sides. Tazkristi already posted the pic!
LAVA
*Cool* very ergonomic. Great work Chad - must have been a dream come true! I hope the model sells well so that Spyderco will consider doing it with G-10 scales.
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/lava.jpg
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/lavaback.jpg
BUTTERFLY's
All SpyderFly's were there, including a trainer of the B01. Pics are in the 2006 catalog.
FLAT GRIND CHINOOK
The 3rd generation of the Chinook. Now with a flat grind. See Wouter's thread here for pics.
CAPTAIN
What a monster. Two different edges for different type of work. The recuve for pull cutting and the 'belly' for skinning. Very heavy weight. Lot's of screws. Smooth action and rock solid lock-up. The top grind on the blade is not sharpened and is there to remove weight.

WAVED ENDURA/DELICA
Pics say more then words...
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/waves.jpg
P'KAL
Very technical knife. Lot's of interesting features like the removable wave. The small ball-lock with the release piece. Very scary when Sal deploys it in a few nano seconds :O
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/pkal.jpg
S
The successor to the 'Q' and the 'R' is logically the 'S'. It's the Salsa pattern. Aluminum handles with cut-outs. Wireclip (shorter then the Salsa).
Blade also has a pattern, which can be custom ordered (minimum 500 pieces). Made in Taiwan
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/s.jpg
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/sback.jpg
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/sclosed.jpg
VOLPE
The Volpe wasn't here. Probably because Joyce & Kelly took it to Italy where they were vistiting there Italian business contacts.
There were also two mini Volpe's. Nice little knives with on-lays, slightly bigger then the Ladybug/Jester. Probably more appreciated by women.
CALY 3
The long awaited updated G-10 Calypso Jr. Very similair to a locking UK Penknife with dual steel liners. Wire clip. Very nice piece! Could have used a lanyard hole in my opinion however.
There's an extra pic with a plastic prototype of the UKPK next to it. Spyderco makes these plastic proto's when they design a model. Some models can have up to 25 revisions of the plastic proto before they make an actual model.

with a plastic prototype (from the UK Penknife)
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/caly3plastic.jpg
CALY 4
A smaller version of the CALY 3 (2.5" blade). The concept model was with bolsters and cocobole wood. Very nice! A bit heavy though...
CATBYRD
A big big big Byrd in concept stage.
G-SAKAI CARABINER
A very technical concept knife with a built in carabiner. Very small and thin.
ED SCHEMPP KRIS
Ed Schempp explained the Kris design, and the ergonomics. Interesting things about the number of waves, the type of grind etc.
Great to hear and makes you appreciate the knife even more.
ED SCHEMPP BARONG
A beautifull damascus concept based on an ethnic design. What a knife. Sorry no pics of this beauty.
ED SCHEMPP CORSICAN NAVAJO
Another beautifull damascus ethnic design concept. An interesting feature was the ratcheting effect when you open and close to blade.
ED SCHEMPP CAMP KNIFE
The big big camp knife. Great to hear how Ed Schempp really supports and stands behind his product. Only the best will do. No compromise. Most other contenders in the cutting competion use custom blade, but Ed only wants to use a production blade, so that we as users can have the same blade that he's using.
TUFF
The Tuff concept model Tough Tough Tough - very heavy titanium integral compression lock
ZDP DELICA
The 4th generation Delica with the solid ZDP-189 blade. As Wouter said, a sort of greyish blue. Very nice.
URBAN
The urban is a concept of a smaller UK penknife. Same notch-lock. There were two concepts, one blue G-10 with a wharncliffe blade. The other with bolsters & wood. Should make a great office piece. Very 'non-knife-people' friendly
SUPERHAWK
A concept model of this mega mega hawkbill. The same peel-ply carbon fiber as in the Military. The lock in this concept model was a compression lock. (Like the Para-military)
DIVE KNIFE
An H1 based dive knife in concept stage. A very 'fugly' design ;)
FRED PERRIN STREET BOWIE
Smaller version of the FB04 - The hole in the blade is actually a forward lanyard hole. So that you can slash/chop but still can secure the blade - production piece will be slightly different - no tapered tang but drilled tang to reduce weight.
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/perrin.jpg
ANSO ROCK LOBSTER
A concept model of the Spyderco version of the ANSO Rock Lobster. Massive piece, but the final model will need some ergonomic tweaking.
AIRBORNE
Don't remember if I can tell any details about this one, so that will have to wait.
DOMINO
A normal and spring-loaded blade with a kicker. Very nice, medium sized G-10 folders with a drop-point style blade. Nice!
MICRO DYAD
Honey colored jigged bone - 1200 pieces. Beautifully made. (MOKI if I'm not mistaken.) Got to have one of these.
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/microdyad.jpg
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/microdyad2.jpg

http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/microdyad4.jpg
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/microdyad5.jpg
BLACK POLIWOG
A black coated version of the Poliwog, but with polished ball. Classy looking!
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/blackpoliwog.jpg
BLACK ADVENTURA
Dialex's Adventura in black. *cool*
http://www.spydie.nl/show2006/blackadventura.jpg
FOLDING SPOT
A very smart concept design of a folding spot. You would need to see it to understand it. Can't describe it here.
MAGNETIC MODEL
An interesting concept model, a 'magnetic' slip joint. Works with rare earth magnets. ?? - Nice shape and size!
FIELD SHARPENER
A very flat and smart field sharpener. It has all the required angles for field touch-ups. Diamond coated (600 mesh?). Will be part of the Byrd line, and very affordable.
AUTOMATICS
At last there were the concept models of the automatics/assisted openers/dual action models. Apart from the lock, I really liked the blade and model shapes!
MOSAIC DAMASCUS
Between the proto's and the concepts, Ed Schempp talked about mosaic damascus. What an amazing craft is that. Way too complicated to explain here, but very interesting. I'll cherish my 25th aniversary pattern tile even more!
G-10 BYRDS
The G-10 Byrds. A lot of knife for a very very good price.

Missing were the bolstered Navigator II, but that's still planned to come out out with a nice wood handle. Also the updated Lil Temp wasn't there. The new Bison concept model wasn't ready for the show but it's still in the works.
What a day! :)
So, that's it. I hope everyone enjoys the pics. Hopefully at the IWA I can take some more of the Volpe and the Kiwi's and others that I forgot! :o
My favorite of the day was the Micro Dyad!
Enjoy

Awesome job Ted! My favorite of the day was the folding SPOT concept model and the Captain. But I liked the silky smooth action of the Caly III.
Too bad the micro dyad isn't really set-up for left-handed operation.

Thanks Ted! Great job! This is always one of, if not my favorite part of the Spydie year. I wish I could be there, but the pictures are always nice for those of us who can't go.
I have two requests, not sure if either are allowed. I'd like to see a real picture of the Spin, not the official Spyderco released one that Kritisi gave us. Also, if possible, can we see the ZDP-189 Delica, I'm just curious and excited!

Aaaha, thanks for info,
This knife look awesome Simona, if you have not already seen it, take a look at this page (http://www.cuttingcompetition.com/), and scroll down to the picture of Ed and Sal in the left margin, then click on the picture to see a larger copy of it. Gives a better idea of both the size and blade shape.

Yes, the Caly3 and the Lava felt really good (although I expected the Lava to be a bit bigger, but it's still a nice "gentleman's knife").
They looked good also, so I guess I should start saving for those, too.

 Oh my god! I need a caly 3! And that P'kal is looking nice too... And the micro-dyad... I'm so gutted I couldn't make it :( Any news on the yojimbo trainers? or the P'kal trainer? is the P'kal still coming as a package with it's trainer?

Great pictures Ted. Some of these knives look even better here than they did on Sunday. As always I was surprised by the actual size of some of the models. Some of the little ones like the Spin and the micro Dyad are really small.
Did you take any pictures of the other tiles Ed showed us? Some of them were really amazing like the :spyder: tiles and they would make a nice addition to the pictures, if he agrees to let you show them of course.
thanks ted! super cool! love that calypso jr. 3, micro dyad(need more than 1 for sure), p'kal, and black poliwog.

Thanks for the images and write-up!!
Some great new knives in development. Personally, in addition to the Lava, P'kal, and waved Delica, I really like the look of the new "S" and the Perrin "Street Beat". My "must have" list just got longer - this is one time when I hope the development time spreads the cashflow requirement out a bit. :(
A tip-up Calypso 3 might be enough to get me to buy one of that model also :D
Thanks again!

Dear Ted - On behalf of Spyderco, I would like to thank and compliment you on your post and efforts. The pictures are awsome and the texts are brief but complete and give correct discriptions. You have out done your self once again!

There are a bunch of knives I'm drooling after already... :)

It look like tanto with holes in the blade spine ;)
Hmm..look really interesting ..
LOL - I figured someone would try to do that. Well, the others already explained it and since there's another picture already floating around I wasn't too worried about it. Luckily the other concept models are too small and the picture is sharpened to much to upsize it.
Any plans on coming to the IWA show Simona? It's not that far from Prague...

Excellent job. I was interested to read that they are planning commercial versions of the "S". It will be interesting to see the varities(sp). I wonder if our company "actually the major owners" would ever want to have one :D
Now how small is that dyad.
Thanks to Jur and Spyderco also.

Thanks for the pics and the report!
I'm very interested in the new Fred Perrin Street Bowie. Full tang, what looks like smooth g10 or micarta scales... This could be the start of Spyderco really jumping into the fixed blade market.
I'm very interested in the dimensions. It looks like it may be a good EDC piece.

Hi,
You will go??
..so yes, of course, im thinking about it!, yees, it would be great, without doubt, say "hi" to all Spyderco Crew and Ed Schempp! ... :)
Yes, its circa 300km from me, not so far, but damn - still is bad weather, snow, ice...and i have sport car on 265/45/17 summer tyres, so i dont know...this is big problem on the snow, its like when you are driving by smooth melons...
And hotel i have not, i dont know, if when i will go, i will find some hotel there, thats a question, i dont know, - if IWA is so big or not and no hotel rooms will be free..and i will be finishing somewhere under bridge :D
Thats really big dilemma, i will see...
Simona, a hotel in the centre would be very difficult. IWA is so big that all the hotels are booked. You could probably find something close to Nurnberg since you're driving. I'm going indeed (leaving friday and going back on sunday).
Wouter (Mr Blonde) is also going, and some other forum members from germany and other places.
Sal, Eric, Jack, Joyce, Kelly, Olive, Ed Schempp & Jurphaas will be there from the Spyderco crew. Joyce has free passes.
If you're going, let me know and I can probably arrange something for you to pick up the passes.
Mr Blonde
03-08-2006, 09:25 AM
Yep, I'll be there as well, but 'regular' hotels were booked up already in may of last year. At least according to a quick online check. I'm staying with relatives though.

Some very intriguing blades coming out. The Captain looks like a tank. Very cool stuff on the horizon.

Ted:
You said both of these were "smaller" than the Caly3/UKPK cousins. Are just the blades smaller, or are the handles smaller as well? I'd love an even smaller (lower profile) UKPK. :) Maybe the Caly 4 (if the whole package is smaller) will replace the dragonfly?

They are smaller allover, size is about that of the Walker. Nice and convenient.

Ted,
Thanks very much for the pics and info. The Captain really appeals to me as does the Caly3. I'd like to get one of the Co-Pilots as well. When they talk about sprint runs, does that mean a pre-order should be, or can be taken?
Thanks flipe8,
Sprint run means only one run of the model in a certain configuration (steel/color). This run of the co-pilot will be 1200 pieces. That should be plenty supply to get yours. No need for a pre-order IMHO... Otherwise just contact your dealer and reserve a couple if you want to be sure.

Smaller version of the FB04 - The hole in the blade is actually a forward lanyard hole. So that you can slash/chop but still can secure the blade - production piece will be slightly different - no tapered tang but drilled tang to reduce weight.

Anybody know what handle material is planned for the Perrin Street Bowie? Looks Micartaish but who knows?
The proto was Micarta, but there will be some changes in the final model, so I don't know if they will keep the handle material.

Ted, did I get correctly what you said
- production piece will be slightly different - no tapered tang but drilled tang to reduce weight.
Does drilled tang mean the skeletonized full tang, something like liners with 'drilled' holes in Manix? IMO, a half tang would be a huge step back from the proto.
Franco

Don't know - Sal said drilled tang instead of tapered tang. My guess is that a full tang is also easier to make?

This is what a drilled tang looks like. Put the handle slabs on and you'r done.
It's a lot easier to do then to make a tapered tang and you have the same result in weight distribution. Very important if you have to work within a price range.

Boy, I love the handle design of the Breeden(captain). Wish it had nicer blade!
Very nice the Caly is a dream and the Perrin looks terrific. Can't wait for the Lobster either.

uh...FB03 Tanto, FB09 Ronin...
Ted your examples don't show the grain very well bro. I'll post some pics when I get home. ;)
Hi Guys, We're back home. it was a marathon trip but worked out well.
We had a great time at the Amsterdam gathering, thanx to all. A special thanx to Jur for the arrangements and Ted for the pics.
Thanx also to Karim for the pics of the disaster at the store. Also a great testimonial for the Salt models.
And thanx to Ed Schempp for his help.
We learned a great deal and I feel the meet was definitely worth the time and effort from our end.
It was good to see dealers there as well.
We'll need input to make next year even better.

Sal and everyone from the Spyderco crew,
glad everyone made it back safely. I hope you had a good time in Germany, although you probably didn't see much of the country, standing at the IWA all day.
It was great to meet everyone there, thanks a thousand times for inviting us.
Looking forward to seeing you on the Messerforum.net,
blessings from Hamburg,
Keno (cheez at the Messforum.net)

Hi Ted, as promised once I got home...not the best pictures, but hopefully enought to illustrate the difference between ho hum micarta grains and hot and sexy grains.
First the ho hum....knife on the right.

now for some sexy grains...my studies show they do indeed cut better... ;)

Nice Randall! - IIRC the micarta on the Perrin wasn't as sexy as that last shot...but more shinier then on a Ronin. But, I guess it all depends on the type of micarta (paper, linen or canvas), the colors used and the type of finish.

Fantastic pictues and story! Thank-you for sharing! I am still after a 2004 model (Manix!) but I'd sure like one of those waved Enduras as well! And buy does the g-10 byrd line-up look good. As do the black Polywog and Dialex's futuristic Adventura! The black sure sets it off nicely.
A note on micarta: the texture and look of micarta does depend on the type used (paper or cloth of varying coarseness usually) and the finish applied. I made a knife that was going to be a gift for a fellow who hunts and camps and such. I used micarta, but finished the handle off with fine synthetic steel wool. Well, it kinda looked dullish, for sure. I oiled it too (brings the rich color back), but the finish was still "dullins". But holy heck does the knife grip well! You can get micarta to shine sooo nicely, thanks especially to the fact that it is made of a laminate material and essentialy glue! But the sniny sexy surface can be slick.
These are trade-offs you have to deal with. I agree that polished handles look way better, but a blasted surface or one sanded with steel wool will grip better. This is an important concern especially when fluids may be involved. That outdoorsey knife I made I knew would be used on animals and around water, so I had to make sure the knife would stay in the guy's hand when heis hand was wet. So coarser surface it is!

It isn't out yet though - the other company has a fixed dive knife in a highly corrosion resistant metal (Benchmade), if she is leaving soon.
