Hey Samo,
Those looked like some nice fish. What kind of carp was that? Do you use artificial or cut/live bait over there to catch the larger species? Over here in the states I mainly fish for large cats: FLATHEAD, channel, and blue. The flathead beeing my fave, because of its unusual character. The flathead has been known to chomp down on 10 pound carp, and send scales flying.
Scince we are booth fisherman and knifenuts, we should make a blueprint of the ultimate fillet knife for sal. Maybe an offshore---Thickblade with spyderedge , Small fish fillet knife 7 inch PE, and a general use with a 9 inch blade. What do you think, handle type, steel, grip ect?

Hey Samo. More great pics! I've been away from fishing too long.
Is the first fish a catfish? Looks quite a bit like ours, except for the coloring. Can't remember the fin pattern exactly anymore. Too many years.
I agree that the carp is beautiful. Am not convinced I would kiss it as your friend is doing, but a beautiful fish, nonetheless.
Are both these fish edible? Could you give me a ball park figure on the weight? Damn! If I could catch anything that size, I think I'd get out there and get at it again.
Don't think the Catcherman is enuff knife for that carp. Maybe not for the first fish either. Never eaten carp, but catfish is about my favorite of freshwater fishes.
Looks like you had a great time.

Thanks for the input!
Sorry for not quoting the species.. De Paul! Yeah, its a Masheer alright! Its our very own Malaysian Red Masheer. This one is wild carp which weighs about 29 pounds, captured using fermented tapioca and released after we've implanted a microchip onto the dorsal fin of this biggie! About one week later, another giant was landed and tagged. This one weighed about 43.8 pounds!
I must add that there is a little bit of Spyderco influence here because I gave some Spydies and a 204 to the villagers who assisted us in this conservation programme.
Stare ~ The Red Masheer (tor tambriodes) is high up at the end of the spectrum. Its an excellent food fish which is now being threatened by overfishing. The old man in the pix who held the fish is one of the very few experts left in my country. I think I gave him a little moran to do his daily chores! Well, to the trained hand, no task is big enough for the catcherman!
Oh yeah fisherman ~ I think Poppa Spyder and the Spydercrew will appreciate your input towards making the perfect Spydie fillet -- Catcherman FB! Personally speaking, VG-10 would be an excellent choice for an offshore angler's utility blade... One such example is the Fallkniven F-2 fishing knife.. I'd prefer krayton impregnated G-10 handles for texture and feel, well, why not FRN as well?

Hi Samo,
Great pics. Can't believe that part of your job description is "go out fishing". You are a lucky man my friend.

Howdy Joyce!
Guess the hunt for Ronin had kept you on your feet eh? Been busy doing some in-country travelling for some feature stories.. And I'm really excited with the prospects of some new fillet Spydies!

Hey Samo, tomorrow, I am out fishing. Let you know, if I get something. The goal is to catch some whitings.
Last time I caught 75 of them. They are very small and I usually fry them in oil without removing the bones. They will be edable anyway. The only thing I´d do is to remove the contains of it´s guts.

Good Luck and Tight Lines dePaul!
Yum-Yum! Whitings! They are tasty alright!! Do you jig 'em with multiple rigs or hook em up one by one! '
Oh yeah! Sweden is famous for making knives! I guess Fallkniven is one of the exceptional companies!

Nice pictures Samo . Good luck in the future.
Since we are talking about fishing, I might as well say that I enjoy a different kind of fishing.
We usually go out for tuna, marlin, shark, and any other offshore fish.
Don't know how to post pics, but I'll tell ya my standings...(I'm 15, by the way):
Shark: 250+ pounder
Marlin: 79 inch white marlin
Tuna: 87 pounder (hooked up with a possible 300+ pound fish, but lost it at boatside)
Wahoo: 58 pounder
Mahi-Mahi: 28.7 pounds
I like your fillet knife idea ...i'd buy a couple Sal .
An honest man's pillow is his peace of mind

Samo, I use a single hook and no float. The technique is just to put on a bait (a tiny bit of a herring) on a hook, size 12 (diminutive) and let it slowly sink to the bottom.
Somewhere in the middle, (8 meters) they announce them selves by hitting the herring quite hard for a fish of this size. There is no need for a contra stroke. Just lifting them up is all that is aquired.
However, I was thinking. Your proposal to apply multiple hooks is very good (thanks)!!! I´ll try that tomorrow!
Yeah, Fällkniven is a well known brand around here. Unfortunately, they do not make folders (they will though in near future).
I own the first and original F1 featuring ATS-34 (!!!) and made by Solingen, Germany! My knife has #154. Quite a looker too IMO, nicer than the latter ones.
Take care!

Hi Turbo! Thanks for sharing and the kind words! I can surely look forward to the Spydie fillets! The one thing that I miss the most is offshore fishing. Done some gamefishing over here.. We have warm water billfishes and tunas as well!
DePaul ~ Thanks for the tips! I used to jig mackerels with mustad multiple rigs. They are imported from Norway and cost a bomb over here! The fun thing is lifting five to ten fishes from the deep with these rigs! I have a collection or Martiini fillet knives including a small puukko. They are marvellous!
