Dudes,

I want to share pictures of a local knifemaker who produces the traditional "golok" [go`lork] or "parang" [pa`rung] This particular maker tempers and ground his blades out of vehicle leaf spring which is high in carbon...

Cool pics, Samo! Very interesting. I recently bought an E-Nep from a Thai fellow who haunts Blade Forums. Real cool knife, tho maybe not quite so handy for self defense as the parang. I like the look of the Bowie-type as well.

Can you give us an idea in dollar terms how much such knives cost?

FWIW -- you might try to suggest to your friend, that he's going to be very deaf at a fairly young age, unless he protects his hearing from all that grinding. I think even cotton balls in the ear would improve things. As long as he is grinding 5160, he probably can get by without a respirator. I just read about an American maker who was grinding a steel with only .02% vanadium in it who was seriously poisoned by it. Vanadium is toxic.

I think your friend would live a longer, happier life, and make many more knives, if he took some steps to protect his health.

Sorry, am off my soapbox for today.

Thanks for the feedback folks The golok is cheap and widely used in our farms and oil palm estates...
Stare ~ Thanks the for the input dude! I'll pass on the safety note to the maker. If you are talking about the e-nep, I think the person in question is no other than Khun Santi Senarat... I know this guy as well. For a good working parang, it'll cost you less than $50, but there is a long waiting list cos not many of these makers are active... I have to wait about six months before I could get something out.. Will post some pix as we move along..

Collaboration? Ummmm... I think there are little demand for such large utility blades.. Its quite easy to make a golok actually!
