When you are so excited but worried at the same time, and cant help but feel ill for days on end even though it is a small matter at hand. I had a job interview on Friday, and as soon as my background check comes in i start training. Its not the background check i am worried about, I'm just nervous about this new job. It is a good size pay increase and will be pretty steady hours, but it is a more responsible job and it is in a far more serious environment than i am used to. Even though i am told by many that i act much older than i am, i am still a kid for the most part, and i think in a way i am afraid to take on more responsibility. It makes little sense to me, but i needed to vent anyway. Sorry to lay this on all of you, but as always thanks for being here.

Hey John,

hahah...Don't worry about it. Nerves are natural and as you get older you will figure out that nerves are worthless... At least for me they are. All you need to do is put your body and mind together and do the best you can. I'm sure you will be able to tackle any obstacle as long as you have a clear head and you are determined to succeed.

Best of luck...Thoughts and prayers sent. ;)

Starting a new job is one of the most stressful events of a lifetime - and it doesn't end quickly. Accept the fact that challenging a new job will continue to cause stress for some time. I've was once told that it can take 1 to 1 1/2 years to really feel comfortable in a new job. Through experience, I can comfirm that it's true.

The secret is to learn to live with it and use the stress to urge you on to work harder and succeed. Interpret stress as excitement, enjoy the challenge and have fun!

Rock and David,
Thanks for the support. The one plus side is that i will have some spending cash now! So i can buy supplies and more Spydercos. I would have to agree that it takes about a year to get comfortable at a job, but after that first year time really seems to fly. I was at gander for over 2 years and can still remember the day we opened the new store and i was sitting behind cutlery and optics wondering what was the difference between buck and Spyderco. After time though i learned a great deal and turned that counter into my home. Until they decided i would perform better else ware. Either way, thanks for the guidance and support, and i will keep everyone posted.

Irish Lager: You will be just fine!! From the conversations we have, you are much more mature that most guys your age. You take the things that you need to take seriously, seriously!! I get the impression that you do not shirk your responsiblities!! They will be LUCKY to have a fine man like you working for them. You have a caring attitude. I think you are awesome!! I DO understand the nervousness. Relax, God brought you THIS far, He won't drop you on your head! You are in my prayers!! Let me know if there is anything I can do to help!

Reminds me of my first job as a doctor. Never been so nervous ever again.
More responsibility does however increase job satisfaction in the end. No need to doubt your abilities. You are a Spyderco forumite!

Congrats on the new job. Look at it this way, in most areas of the country these days there are more applicants than decent jobs. So if someone, or a group of people, who should be in a position to know the qualifications for the job you're getting decided you are the one they want, just relax and do your best.

Hey IL, Bro You'll Do Just Fine ;) . Don't worry about taking the responsibility. Apparently they saw something in you, Telling them You Can Step Up and Handle the Job. There is such things as "Being Wise Beyond Your Years". You can Do Anything You Put Your Mind to Brother. "We Can Do All Things Through Christ Who Strengthens Us". Keep Your Chin Up and Take Care My Friend. Prayers Already Sent from this end. ;)

God Bless :)

Everyone get's nervous when they start a new job, if you weren't nervous, that's when you'd better start worrying ;)

You'll be fine, but good luck anyway. A little extra luck never hurt

Hey Irish Lager, guess I'm late to this party and everyone else has already said it best but I've always found the first day to be much more full of pre game jitters than it is really worth. Congrats on the new job!

Hi John, congrats on your new job. You'll do just fine, if you remember to follow several simple rules:

Only the one that doesn't work doesn't make mistakes. And if doesn't make mistakes, it deserves to be promoted.

Work less than you can, and what you can, let others do.

What you can solve today, don't leave for tomorrow - but for the day after, because till then, either is solved, or it's already forgotten.

If you can't repair a minor damage, provoque a major one. This way they'll call the specialists (who will also solve the minor damage as well).

If you see someone taking a break, help him.

and finally: The job isn't a pub, to stay there after closing time, not it's a church, to come on Sundays. ;)

Thanks everyone. I knew this was the place to go for support and advise. They didn't get my background check back yesterday, so i am hoping for today. I know i am over reacting but like Scott said, if i wasn't nervous then i would have a reason to be.

Dialex,
Thanks for the much needed laugh. I tend to take things a bit too seriously and often to heart which is a side effect of my age I'm told, but i am truly excited about this job.

I forgot to mention the job, someone should have yelled at me for that. Ill be part time leasing apartments and the other half of the time working the grounds for the complex. I am the only person in the company that will be working in both areas, so it will be interesting to see how it works out. But on a side note it will be something different each day, rather than repetitive retail sales. Thanks again to everyone that posted above, i don't know where i would be if i didn't have this place in my life.
Take care my friends,
John

Aloha IL,

Hey buddy! Good to see you! :)

Hey, your "maturity" shows bro. You are concerned about responsibilities and such, and that's good. However...

NEVER lose the "child within you"...being "young at heart" preserves your youth, and keeps you pliable! ;) Plus it prevents you from becoming an old, rancid, bitter, disgruntled, etc. type of person.

Congrats and hey, FWIW, God bless ;)

Thanks Chad,
This forum is a wealth of knowledge and experience and without it i would truely be lost.
I'll tell you what, ill try and stay a little young while aging, as long as you stay young at heart. Take care my friend.

Congrats on the new job Irish, I'm sure you'll do great :). I know what you mean about the nerves, they've always been there when I've changed jobs, I guess it's kinda a fear of change thing .

Best of luck to you, and God Bless!

Just thought I'd let everyone know how it is going. I had my first day at my new job today. Granted it was a half day and was only training i think it went well. There are a lot of things about this job i think i will like. Including longer lunches ;), paid holidays, vacation time, more professional atmosphere, friendly co-workers. So far so good. I have tomorrow off because of school, but will be working thurs - sun, so i am already getting more hours than i was at my previous employer. Thanks again to everyone for the continued support and good faith. I will keep you all posted on my progress. Take care,
John
