View Full Version : I've Been Unfaithful

After using Spyderco’s VG-10, I told myself I would never buy another knife that had a “lesser” steel. I also decided that thumb studs were no longer desirable since the hole felt so much better once I’d gotten rid of those bad “thumb stud” habit.

Then came the byrd line, offering knives that well, I just couldn’t get in VG-10.

Then came last week:
Two of the many knives I’ve always admired were the Timberline’s Wortac Supreme, and Valloton Liner Lock. I used to own a large Wortac with the Zytel scales (and liked it enough), but sent it to a fellow forum member who I though may appreciate it more than myself. When they came out in the winewood scales, I really liked the look of them, but never went after one because for the price they commanded, I’d rather spend my money on Spydercos.

Last week I was in a store with another forum member looking at close out knives when he pointed out the Valloton to me. I’d been wondering about them for awhile, so I took a look. I figured that at the price it was marked at I couldn’t go wrong. I didn’t really want a combo edge, but them who am I kidding. I’ll never use it anyway.

While looking at the Valloton, I noticed that they also had a Small Wortac Supreme on display. I’d had one of these in the back of my mind from some time back, as I like the look of the wood scales, and the large version was just a little big for my hand. I’d always liked the deep choil, and that round, lobed butt gave me something substantial to hang onto. And again, it had those wood scales!

I was doomed. I’m not one to spend a lot of money on knives (okay, I’m just plain cheap), but I figured that at the price of these two, it would just be wrong not to buy them. I rationalized it by thinking that I could always get my money back by reselling them.

BTW:
Something I want to add about Tiimberline. Their customer service is excellent. I sent my old Wortac in for repair once, and had it back within less than a week from the day I sent it.

I suppose we could forgive you, but only because of the good pics! Sometimes it good to have a little variety, only in certain areas though, only in certain areas! :D

Enjoy your new additions! :D

God bless,

Simon.

Aloha ghostrider,

Hey bro, if you like a knife, you like a knife. Period.

I am a Clipiteer by heart, but I do like a few CRKT's, BM's, Boker's, and *gulp*, even Cold Steel...

A well known knife designer once said, "Variety is the spice of life." BTW, I won't mention that it was DiAlex who said that. :p

God bless and nice Wortac!

I'm with you on those other brands Chad. Still keep a couple of them myself.

Simon,
Thanks for the compliment. I've been trying to improve my pics, and the digital camera helps.

There's nothing wrong with straying once in a while, it helps to appreciate how good your Spyders really are. ;)

Heck I've got knives from multiple other companies, and most of them are pretty decent, even if they're not quite up to Spyder standards ;)

Boy, that's the truth. Not that there's anything wrong with these Timberline's, but like DAYWALKER, I do like my Clipit's.

How's the liner on the Wortac? I read a couple of complaints from people that said it was a little weak.

It's different seeing a "tactical" knife such as that, with nice wooden scales.

I heard the same thing, but never had a problem. I use to EDC the large, Zytel one without any problems. I never spine wacked it, nor do I do anything that would put a lock to the test. It seemed pretty secure.

The wooden scales are what draws me to this knife. Tactical, with a touch of class.

Just did a few spine wacks. Use as much force as I dared since I'm not to worried about messing up this knife. No failure or resultant blade play.

I LOVE knives, and I buy what I like. But it is funny, when I buy another brand (And I am NOT talking about customs mind you.), it makes me appreciate my Spyders more. I bought a Ritter Mini-grip; which is my first knife with the Axdis lock. And I have a D'Allara DP. I like the Axis lock, but I think that the Spyderco ball bearing lock IS smoother and easier to use. (I have said so on many a forum.) See, it made me appreciate my D'Allar DP MORE; which I LOVE anyway. So, buy what you like. I know I do.

Don't be afraid that the Spyderco Forum police are going to hunt you down... but maybe leave those other brands outside on the doorstep just to be safe! :D

You cheating tramp!

No worries David...If you like a knife, then buy it. No one will fault you for that. Heck, I have some Benchmade and Boker products.

I'm also one of those ones that buys what catches my eye. I have the Timberline Envoy that I picked up not that long ago, and I agree the liner is a bit thin, but it mine held up to the spine whack test OK, though I didn't beat it up either :) Just this last little while, though, only Spydies have been catching my eye. If I like one a lot, I will typically buy two - interestingly, I now have 3 Delica 4's  One of them, a CE one, though, is being saved for an upcoming project - sort of a donation..... :) I couldn't wait for Rowland at Target Knives here in town to get his new Spydie shipment in so I ordered online, and danged if he didn't phone a couple of weeks later and said they were in. One of my co-workers asked me to pick up an Endura 4 for him as well. I was with my real estate agent at the time (we were on the way back from doing a final inspection on a revenue property I bought, so I couldn't stay very long, otherwise I may have picked up an E4 as well :D
