Well I just got a competitor's new sales catalog in the mail today. They announced that they are making some knives with a new blade steel called VG-1. Now my first guess would be that it must be a cousin to VG-10. But I would love to see a chart on this potentially new, stellar blade steel. They also showed one of their knives with a SAN MAI III laminated VG-1 as well.

Is anyone in the know about this new kid on the block? Have any of you had first hand usage of this new, never heard of before>> blade steel?

I don't have any 1st hand knowledge about it. I noticed it on the aforesaid competitor's website yesterday - kinda wondered about it then. I googled it and found this link, not much info, but maybe for starters:

http://www.e-tokko.com/eng_vg1.htm

Maybe it's either a REALLY new steel or a proprietary name for an existing grade.

It looks similar to VG-10, but missing some key elements in it's composition.

I would expect it to be on par with 440C.

It looks decent, but I like my VG-10

Yeah this company whom I won't name at this time really does a great marketing job pumping up something that ain't all that great. Just like the fact that they still use AUS-8 in a lot of their main line knives while the Great Spyder Factory moved onto better things about 5 years ago.

Now I'm not saying that they don't make a decent "hard use" knife because some of their stuff is OK. But none of it has any collectible aspects to it. And it seems like they are incredibly slow to change or modify anything. Looking over the composition of "VG-1" I would be willing to bet that Spyderco's or Benchmade's 440c is probably superior. It appears like they are taking some slightly above average blade steel and hyping it relentlessly. same old, same old>>

What else would you expect from a company who stabs car doors to prove how great their knives are. ;)

They have on occasion used decent steel, but not very often. I would expect VG-1 to be "ok" but I'm not metallurgist, so I can't say for sure.

I'll stick with proven steels

You will never see the aforementioned ever use ZDP-189 blade steel or any other space age innovation in a timely manner. Their customer service is a joke at best. The people that take orders on the phone barely have a single digit I.Q. But they are great "copy cats" i.e. the Spyder HOLE and Civilian blade design>> Pocket clips ect, ect at nausium It's no way to run an airline IMO

Quite frankly, what upsets me the most is that on the very cover of the DVD that is supposed to show off function and performance of their own "great" products is a design that isn't even their own, but got blatantly ripped off, very much to the annoyance and anger of the designer  :"Look how great the design that we....uhm...stole from someone else....works"! What a way to advertise  !

I'm fortunate to have never seen that video, and only heard about it. What knife is featured on the cover, out of curiosity?

Same old song and dance on all accounts, theirs and what is being re-hashed here (ex-cluding the part about VG1 of course).

I don't much like too many of their products, but the Magnum Tanto XII is a nice small-large fixed blade.

If it is something stolen...most likely it is the San Mai III Talon, which looks very similar to the Spyderco Civillian. Although on closer inspection it looks like the Sable...which people feel is a rip off of the persian?

I dont have an exact knowledge in CS collabs (or knock offs?) but the Sable looks to me as one of Brian Tighe´ s designs. I dont remeber right now if there was his name named in CS catalog.

The "new" Talvar is basically a Scimitar on steroids and better materials. The price is TERRIBLE, I believe you can afford a custom knife in the level of 460 USD.
Spyderco would build literally a sword of Jedi for that money ofr ELU´s.

Basically I would place these CS "semi-customs" in the price range around 150-200USD according to material that were used. Just IMHO.

No need to link to the rip-off. The original is the Tighe stick by Brian Tighe which he makes in several variants:
The upper one here:
http://www.tigheknives.com/TpgTGal2.html
and with his trademark ground blade
http://www.tigheknives.com/Tpg1Tac.html

I think Brian Tighe and CS worked something out, but it was again after the fact. I remember how Brian Tighe was contacted by a forum member of bladeforums and informed of the rip-off, when CS first came out with it. Brian Tighe is not a very active member of bladeforums, but after that he posted a few time stating very clear that he had no prior knowledge of this and never authorized CS's design. And since his designs are so individual and characteristic the rip-off is rather obvious.

Not only is it somewhat laughable: I watched about 15 minutes of one of those DVDs and I was left saying>> What's the point? Stabbing car doors, whacking rope, mutilating a side of beef? I would bet a lofty sum of money that any reasonable quality production knife could do the same. But then again the biggest money maker in the entertainment industry is WWE wrestling on TV. And believe it or not I have met 2 adults in their 30s that believe it is real  . Just like the Republican/Democrat fiasco here in the states>>some folks even believe that's real
