Hey guys, besides colllecting knives I also collect tattoos. I am almost finished with my left sleeve, just have some shading to do, about 6 hours worth and the left arm is done. I have a pic of my upper arm at outline stage. I will get some updated pics up soon as I have someone that will take the pics for me.

So if you have tattoo(s) lets see them.

I don't have any tatoos and anything I know about them is through osmosis only. Is that an "Asian" style tatoo?...or does it even have a style to it?

severedthumbs

some may refer to this style of tattoo as Yakuza style. I just prefer to regard it as traditional Japanese style.

The last 2 pics feature a tribal around my right arm.

Second pic is a lion.

This tattoo is a tribute to my dad's fighting spirit during his battle against cancer(which he regrettably lost after about 4 months in 2003)

The first pic is the name of my son in gothic lettering(DYLAN)

Hi severed, although i don't have any tattoo's i can enjoy Tattoo's from different culture's especially the Japanes style called Horimono. I also like the fact that you can still get it done by tebori.
Although very expensive the fact that you endure multiple tebori sessions is a brave act indeed.

severedthumbs
04-10-2006, 07:24 AM
Horimono, I can never remember that word. Not irezumi, horimono. So many people think yakuza, but I am not japanese mafia.

tebori is cool, takes forever though and it is hard to find a artist that does it in America. All my work is kikaibori. Kikabori is much faster and still very painful in some areas, especially the elbow. The artist that does my work is a japanese guy that is actually from japan. pretty cool to actually have a japanese artist do the work. he tells me so much japanese stuff and I don't hardly remember any of it. But it is kind of hard to listen to a lecture on japanese art history while the ink is being pounded.

I don't have any pix of mine. I have a rose that wraps around my right wrist, a moon and stars on my left shoulder blade (it was the first one), and a wolf howling at the moon, with purple tribal, on the right shoulder. The wolf was first. Then when I was in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, I had the blue moon and purple tribal done. So the wolf tat counts as 2. I LOVE wolves, by the way. I am always wanting another!!!

Hey Severdthumbs
What do you have on the lower part of you'r sleeve?

It is a koi swimming up stream with waves and wind bars. Also a peony and another flower that I forget the name of at the moment. Also I have a couple kanji on the waves. I will try to get a pic of it sometime. It begins at my wrist and goes up to my shoulder.

No tatoos on me, sorry (although I tatooed some of my colleagues when I was in the army). ;)
When I and my lovely lady got married, we were toying a little with the idea of making a small rose somewhere on the lower abdominals, but gave it up.
My father in law has a couple on his arms and thighs (he made them when he was in the army). They are the rough stuff they used to make with a couple sewing needles and ink.

I don't own a camera, but I have two tattoos as well, a knife on my left arm and a symbol on my upper back that is... well, frankly, just too nerdy to share. I got them both during tough times in my life, and when I look at them it serves as a reminder that I have the strength to overcome. Freak and a loser I guess.

Wraps around the front of my shoulders but here's the best angle. The web on my right shoulder goes right to my armpit. The spider and lizard are about 8 years old but were semi-redone when I had the rest added. I had never seen anything like it until Tanks pic of the tree frogs earlier in this thread. I really like his detail, little more in depth than mine.

Man do I feel like a jack@$$ :o . The only reason why I siad that, is because I ran into some morans from high school yesterday and they look down at us who decide to "ruin our bodies in that way". I was just fed up and tired of morans thinking that way. Whats worse is after two years of these moran working and going to college they're still as ignorant as they were back in school.

I can't really think of anything to get. I've looked at a lot of people's tats. Some of them are GARBAGE. They're a dumb design and they look like crap.

This guy next to me at work is probably 50 percent covered. I like all of his tats. They all look really good and they're all interesting and unique looking.

This other guy at work has his wifes name (MISTAKE) really huge on his fore arm in big letters, a fighting irish guy that looks ok, and a cobra on his leg that looks like crap.

If I was going to get tatted up, I'd at least get good quality work done.

here's a dragon for you guys, my sister drew it:
(look at bottom, it wouldn't let me link it so I uploaded it)

This was when she was in the 11th grade or something, she drew a lot of it on the way home on the bus. She started with pencil then used a bic ball point.

More stuff from her (LOTS OF DRAGONS):

I'd say, get your sister to design your tattoo, her stuff looks good and that would be the personal unique touch a good piece needs.
Also, go all the way for a good design and don't be shy about the price, you'll wear it forever...
Important: Be sure about the visibility - sometimes you want it out of sight due to the prejudice mentioned earlier.

The pieces worn by the people here are all nice, especially that full arm dragon should be great when finished.
I'll post a pic of my tattoo soon. :)

I've been waiting to get mine when I finally have a good job. Looking at $300 for the 2 small ones I want.

Trinity on one shoulder, raven on the other. Also plan to either get a barcode with my SIN(SSN to some of you) or a canadian flag somewhere(most likely on an ankle or calf).

Now if I can only find a job from this education.

Hey Skuslos
First off your sister does some nice work. One of the thing you need to look at if you want to get tattooed. Is the person's who might be tattooing you portfolio. One to see what kind of work they done and to see if they're style of art matches what you want. Trust me this will pay off in the end. If you look at the characters on my left arm before I put the dragon and scroll on it, it looks like crap because the guy who tattooed me "lost his portfolio" I should of known better and not have the guy tattoo me, because he used a magnum on me.

For those of you who don't know, that's a tattoo machine that has 30 or more needdles going in you at one time. A GOOD tattoo artist either never uses them or they use them only on big back pieces.

severedthumbs
04-22-2006, 09:13 AM
johnny8642, magnums are a necessity when it comes to shading. Magnum needles can have anywhere from 5 to about 23 needles in them. It just depends on how large the area is that needs to be shaded in is. All artists use magnum needles to shade.

Names of fame:LONNIE (http://www.milehitattoo.net/) at Mile High Tattoo also in Thornton colorado he did my last name and sword on my right arm. And CHAD MARTIN (http://www.sinfulltration.com) at Sinfulltration tattoo in Denver Colorado he design my dragon and scroll. I went to him originally to cover up the kanji characters on my arm.

As always, it helps to research the subject.
To get accustomed to tattoos, read a few tattoo magazines. They will show you good art and you get an overview of the possibilities and styles. Sometimes there are features about bad tattoos, too.
Maybe there's a feature article about an artist in your area...
This way you can develop your ideas and learn to spot good work when viewing a portfolio, Jonny is exacly right about that. It helped me a lot finding "my" studio. :)

It's the Canadian flag. A lot of us canucks have the flag tattooed in one way or another. I wanted something a little different, didn't want to be that guy with the same tat those other 6 guys have. I work with bricks & stone for a living(hence the screen name) and wanted something that involved that as well. They had these cool gargoyles in the same style as my tat and I asked if she could apply the same "stone look" to the flag. She said it was no problem and the tattoo was born.

Pictured is the new Koi tattoo to cover up a Celtic Knot on my chest - it is currently unfinished, needing final shading and possibly coloration (I haven't decided yet). Second pic shows the three tattoos I currently have together for perspective.

I don't have a tatoo but, if I did, it would surround my navel and show a chicken walking south.

Seriously, I am so covered by scars, I'm reluctant to add anything further to my beat myself up.
