Last Summer, midway through the season, i planted a pot of Fargesia Rufa (http://www.bamboogarden.com/Fargesia%20sp.%20'Rufa'.htm) clumping bamboo in the border of the field and the lawn, this was an area that we had previously used as a horse manure pile, there's none there now, *but* the soil there is rich and dark with lots of nutrients, and it gets a nice balance of sun and shade

Rufa is a fast-growing clumper, and it grew easily 3-4" taller since i planted it over last summer, it's total height was about 4 feet tall at the end of the summer, and the clump was a good 10 inches across , it's also hardy and can withstand temperatures down to -15, so with prodigious mulching, it survived our cold Maine winter quite well....

yesterday, i went up to clear away the mulch around the base and found a nice ring of new shoots, the shoots themselves were about 2" tall already and starting to show leaves at the tips of the shoots, with this new growth, the clump is now about 12-15" in diameter, every year it'll add a few inches to it's diameter until it reaches it's maximum clump diameter of 6-8 feet

if you've never experienced live bamboo, it's an awesome plant, a member of the grass family, there are some species (like the Moso) that can grow 60-75 *FEET* in a YEAR, and have culms (shoots) 4-6 inches thick (sadly, Moso isn't hardy enough for Maine winters....

if you've watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the fight they get into in the forest is performed in a forest of 80 foot tall Moso bamboo

Bamboo is up to 3 times more effective at cleaning the air of pollutants than *trees*, when you sit next to a clump of bamboo, the air actually seems fresher and a few degrees *cooler*, it's not psychosomatic, i tested a few people, had them sit next to the Rufa, every one reported feeling cooler and the air tasting cleaner.....

and the quiet rustling sound of the wind through the leaves and culms is very calming and peaceful.....

i can't wait to see how much more growth will happen this year, i mean it's only April and the bamboo's already started growing like crazy.....

My cousin has the same problem. Bamboo grows like wildfire! You have to cut it back every year -- I don't think there is a way to stop it from spreading. I picked up one of these recently with the thought of lending it to my cousin to help with his bamboo problem. Looks like a good tool for the task...

even though there are a lot of dead leaves on the main plant, there is fresh growth on the very tips, the dead leaves were just the victims of a cold Maine winter, the rootstock is fine and the plant *will* rebound

heck, i noticed the shoots had grown 1 inch from yesterday alone...

now, some Spydies with the Bamboo;

WOOHOO!!! :D :D :D

I've been spending so much time saving money and paying off the card, all the while NOT buying any knives, but could have had the damn things growning right in my own back yard :p

Bamboo seems to produce the "beaked" varieies very well! Now I need a Persian tree and a Lava bush! :p :rolleyes: :cool:

Well, Fargesia species are clumpers, once they achieve their maximum clump diameter (6-8 feet for Rufa), they don't spread anymore, even if it *did* spread, i have ways of keeping it under control....

Hey MacTech,
its pretty neat that you are able to get bamboo to grow in Maine. I would of thought it to be much too cold for it to survive. Apparently i was mistaken. Nice pics, i especially liked this one.

Mactech, you seem to know a lot about bamboo. Do you know if any bamboo species could tolerate Las Vegas desert weather? Granted with shade and water.

Zen, if you go to Bamboo Garden (http://www.bamboogarden.com/), you can search for bamboo in your hardiness zone (i believe Las Vegas is Zone 8, Nevada ranges from Zone 5-8)

there's two types of bamboo, running (i.e. "uncontrollable", the *pest* bamboo many complain about) and clumping

clumping bamboo grows in a roughly circular clump, and once it grows to it's maximum clump size, it spreads no more

running bamboo does exactly what the name says, sends runners *everywhere*, most bamboos are runners, and very hard to control without some form of sunken physical barrier (concrete, polyethylene plastic, etc....) the bamboo most people think of when they think of bamboo are the supertall runners like Moso (http://www.bamboogarden.com/Phyllostachys%20edulis%20%20Moso.htm) or Timber Bamboo (http://www.bamboogarden.com/Phyllostachys%20bambusoides.htm)

if i lived in one of the Giant bamboo freindly areas, you'd better believe i'd have a stand of Moso or Timber bamboo growing (in a restrained garden, obviously)

i wasn't able to get a pic this evening, as the light level was too low for the digicam to focus, but the shoot in the below pic;
http://homepage.mac.com/mactechg4/.Pictures/Cricketbamboo.jpg
is now taller than the Cricket by a good 1/4", yes, it grew that much in 24 hours.....
