I'm looking to buy a new knife for EDC. However theres a catch. Since i live in Draconian Massachusetts, i want to keep it to a blade length under 2 1/2". I like the looks of the ss Dragonfly, but i also like the Byrd Robin which looks very similar. Is the blade steel of the Dragonfly far superior to that of the Byrd? I'm open to other suggestions, I just don't want to spend too much money as I can't justify it for the type of use I would give the knife (I have other spydies for more serious work).

you should look into any of the little big cutters.

-Poliwog
-Copilot
-Meercat
-Navigator
-Salsa
-Dodo
-Cricket
-ect

Spyderco makes alot of small bladed heavy cutting knives.

Hi graz985....my 2cents...i've heard the Byrd steel described as akin to AUS8 (probably in the catalog) but I'm no steel expert so I guess the contest would be ATS-55 vs. AUS-8....
Anyhow...the SS Dragonfly is my pic b/w the two...it's a lot more "elegant" looking...thinner profile ....superior fit and finish.....full flat grind....you can't go wrong! ;)

'Atta boy, dedguy! I knew something was missing from your first list ;)

When I saw the title, I had to see the thread...

So far as your initial two selections (Byrd/Dragonfly), I've heard very little about the steel used on the Byrds (still can't even remember the name/number), but I hold what might be very unfair ill will toward AUS-8. Everyone in my family carries a pocketknife of some sort, and each uses the hell out of it. AUS-8 seems to not hold an edge for very long... BUT (and here's where the "might" comes in), all AUS-8 blades were CRKT's carried by my brother and occasionally myself when borrowing, so I don't know about their heat treating process.

There is one fellow among us that I can think of (vampyrewolf) that has carried a Dragonfly for God knows how long, and will swear up and down by it. It is, though, a stainless steel handle Dragonfly with an ATS-55 blade so this will be much different in behavior than AUS-8. I've had an ATS-55 Rescue for more years than I can recall, and it has done absolutely AMAZING. Some have complained that this steel is reluctant to take an edge, and I cannot testify one one side or the other for a plain edge, but for serrated I've been THOROUGHLY impressed.

Even after all that, I HIGHLY RECCOMEND WAITING FOR THE LAVA!!! :D :D

This is a hidden appeal for a Hawkbill. I can spot it a mile off  . No you are not under a hypnotic trance either; it is the good part of your brain/conscience leading you down the right road ;) . There is a time and place for everything. And this is undoubtedly a time for a New Hawkbill. Start out with a Tasman, Merlin then go to the Dodo. The blade lengths of those Spyder claws won't even rock the boat of the Massachuttes dictatorial higharchy. These aquistions will be without any regret nor will there be any looking back or asking yourself: Should I have maybe gotten a Ladybug or Jester or Meerkat maybe ??? NO absolutely not. There are priorities in life. HAWKBILLS are very high on that priority list if you are to take a step to the next level.

There is a time in every man's life to transcend the barriers of the conventional blade and explore new avenues in cutlery. This could be the start of something great in your life. There will be no regrets>> only you saying to yourself>> Why didn't I do this a long time ago  ??

i've found most non-knife people are most drawn to hawkbills for some reason and a hawkbill was my first knife.

while I would recommend the new Spin as a great short blade EDC, I want to personally thank you for your talents bringing the 90 degree threads. You are making the whole idea come alive. Much gratitude. If you can send me a personal e-mail, I would like to call you. Let me know.

My first picks would be the Poliwog, Kopa, Kiwi and Navigator II. Ofcourse, I couldn't dream of living without a Jester. :D

Spyderco offers plenty choices in the small blade arena, which doesn't make things easier.

My favourite would be the Dragonfly in SS with either the NavigatorII or up-coming Lava as other possibles. Price-wise, the Dragonfly is very well positioned.

Many have seen pictures of the pinky-revealing Jester Dance, but few if any have seen it in motion!
