So I was on gpknives.com looking at the what's new section. As I paged through what was new I noticed 2 knives that looked very similar. I thought about how hard it is to make something look like a Spyderco without permission or copy-right infringement. This is a very good thing, and will keep our beloved company looking unique forever.

Oh and these knives shown - one is a Kershaw and the other is a CRKT. They aren't totally the same, just share some characteristics. Very similar design choices, it's hard for me to tell which came first and which is the copy...

So who wants the paint splattered one? :D

The Offset saw production first, but both knives have been customs for a while (dunno which one was first).

I see very few similarities, except for the fact that they have somewhat (not very) similar blade profiles. They both have black blades and handles as well. I don't think a company can patent a black blade or black handles, and the blade shape is nowhere near close enough to be copyright infringement.

One is an Onion design...the other a Tighe. These are both WELL RESPECTED knifemakers. Personally I don't see any similarities.

Just my .02 cents:)

I meant no disrespect to either knife maker.

I just find the shape of the blades very similar. Yes the handles are different, but the blade shape is not. One is either very Kershaw looking or very CRKT looking. Depends on who created that blade shape originally. I would bet it was Kershaw. No they are not identical, but someone is mimicing someone else's style, which one it is, I'm not sure.

With all due respect knightrider, I think your speculation is somewhat of a reach. With your superimposed pic, the only thing to match is a short part of the blade spine. If you were to say that is what is being copied, then you could just as easily say it came from the Jester or ATR. It’s like saying that someone is copying a drop-point, or spear-point blade. I believe it would fall under prior art.

They look similar, but so do a lot of knives. I don't think it's a copy cat design.

For the record, I like the Offset better, but that initial curve closest to the handle really needs some teeth :p

knightrider, put down the crack and move away form the pipe. there is nothing similar about htose 2 knives at all. you are really fishing here and no one is biting.

You have a point there ghostrider. I personally don't have a problem with either knife or company. It's actually flattery when someone mimics something - it means you are doing something right. And they are a lot of similar generic looking Buck-like knives out there that try to go the Buck direction.

They both copied the ATR blade shape... just kidding. :)

I actually don't mind the paint splatter look, I enjoy eighties looking things.

BOT:
I like the splatter look myself, and I wouldn't mind trying out that special steel they are using on the Kershaw.

Personally, I think the blade designs look different enough to be considered their own. Besides that I think it is very difficult to own a blade design, unless it is brand spanking new..and how often does that happen? Besides the CRKT looks way more like the Benchmade 420 Resistor then the Kershaw Offset. I'm not aware if Benchmade or Snody have a patent Gotham Swedged Clip-Point, and I don't think they do. If anything CRKT borrowed the handle, except CRKT got it right where Benchmade screwed up (again my opinion). CRKT's handle feels good, Benchmades is huge and needs a diet. The multiple layers looks gimicky and doesn't feel very nice to me either on both knives.

Saying the blade of the CRKT is a copy of the Kershaw is wishful thinking.

I think if you would hold them in your hand, they would look nothing alike. The grindlines (or should I say "mould lines" for the Offset) are totally different. One is essentially a saber with a swedge on the spine, while the other one is a hollow grind transitioning into a flat grind with a convex spine transitioning into a hollow spine  .

I think none of the knives is a copy. :)
