I think that those two knives (Chinook & Military) are prime examples of how good :spyder: 's S30V is, apollo!

I have no real preference in the sense that either steel is fine by me.
Voted VG-10 because I find it just a bit easier to sharpen.

I like both steels. Voted VG-10 because I mostly EDC knives with that steel. (Delica 4 SS or Caly)

Mini Manix is my favorite Spyderco (until Caly 3 arrives), but that is because of the design, not the steel. S30v holds great edge, but I'm a bit worried that it could chip - so I don't use it that hard.

I must obstain.

Both are premium steels with excellent track records. Both do beautifully in SE, but plain edge use is a bit more steel specific. I like to do hair-popping razor edges on S30V, but toothy utility edges take (and hold) very well with VG10.

Thus, VG10 is an excellent choice for shorter PE blades like that of the Poliwog, Spin, and the Lava because that toothy edge gets a LOT of big work done with drawing cuts in a very short blade.

And S30V was a great choice for the Military, Chinook II, Manix, and the Native (nice having a VG10 option via the Native III too!) for those hot-knife-through-butter pushing cuts and macho shaving demonstrations :p

Either way, there's no wrong way to go between the two.

VG-10.

Holds an edge just fine for all my cutting jobs.

Added bonus of being easier to sharpen.

I'm a fan of the VG-10 because it has a history of good results and besides it is made from that good radioactive cobalt!

In my mind, S30V is the ultimate all-around steel... from the kitchen to the outdoors it can endure anything.

It was never used, so it can't be included. :o

S30V, it is superior to VG-10 in every way and it is made in AMERICA!

i havn't used any of my S30V knives enough to know what the steel is like but my VG-10 SE Harpy held up very well over the years. it's dull now (need to get send it in for all sorts of serviceing) but still cuts through most things better than alot of the kitchen knives i have.

I voted VG 10 for:

- superior rust resistance
- ease of sharpening
- and last, but absolutely no least, the way more aggressive pointier serrations :o :D

For me, VG-10 is very easy to sharpen to a freakishly scary edge.

S30V... not so much.

For me it is S30V with VG10 a close second. In third place would be good old 1095.

No question in my mind about which has more aggressive serrations! Hands down, VG-10.

Both are premium steels, but I chose S30V because it's made in the USA and has a better "look." Both cut extremely well for my needs, so I can't say one is really "better" for me -- just a personal preference.

I'd take either one. I don't have a strong preference either way. I would definitely say that S30V is more difficult to reprofile, but for the small amount of material to be removed for sharpening they are both equally easy to sharpen. I seem to get them both very sharp.

S30V seems to get the bum rap lately and my experience (which is exclusively Spyderco with this steel) has not been bad, to to go against the gain I voted for S30V.

Trying to keep this one going for a few days. BTTT. So far, a slight s30v advantage.

Easy choice for me. VG10 is nice but S30V is better.

I cast my vote for S30V, but I think VG-10 is a very good steel. I have more knives with S30V, but the blades on my D4, E4, older waved Endura, and especially my Shabaria, are all excellent. I would not forego a knife because it had VG-10.

With ready access to a sharpmaker, steel type is totally secondary to me. S30V is nice for the idea of having a steel that stays sharper longer. But for me the better 'user' steel is VG10, it's easier to sharpen.

I voted VG-10 more because I have more experience there and not quite enough to really say that S30V does hold an edge longer for what I do. Guess I should use my Paramilitary more :)

I can't say I radically preffer one or another when it comes to S30V vs. VG-10. I slightly favored VG-10 but S30V is excellent too.

S30V, for me.I voted for VG-10, but I really have no strong feelings on this one. I know that Spyderco does not use any low quality steels, so it's a question of liking a particular model, rather than caring which steel it is made from. But, since out of my seven most frequently carried Spydercos, one is AUS-6, one is H-1, one is S30V and four are VG-10, I voted for VG-10.

Truth is, I would not like my Kiwis, Stretch, Persians, or Calypso Jr. any more or any less if they were CPM S30V, or any other non-damascus steel for that matter. Stainless damascus would be a different thing, I would be more than happy to trade some edge holding for the beauty of it.

The same thing works the other way, the appeal of my C41 Native would neither be increased or decreased if it used VG-10. In fact, although my current "user" Native is S30V, I keep looking for a PE, pre Boye dent, 440V one to replace it, not because I think that steel is better, but because I dislike the Boye dent enough to be willing to use "last year's" steel to be rid of it.

why does vg-10 have pointier more aggressive serrations? It's not really that VG-10 has pointier more aggressive serrations, it's that Seki built models have pointier more aggressive serrations than Golden made ones. More a function of a jig, I'm sure, than the steel.

exactly what I was getting at. So the serrations shouldn't really be a criteria for liking vg-10 more. I can put the most wicked serration you have ever seen on a piece of aluminum, so would aluminum then be your favorite blade material?
