Hey Simon, I was thinking of something a bit smaller.
It's for my wife.
She's planning to go over there to dig up some of her roots.
I have to know what cutlery she can take along.

SAK are about the only knife you can carry, and even then, the cops can arrest you for concealed weaponry..it is a tough one, and most people do not EDC anything...

Thanks Zackerty. Anything on owning or keeping a knife in your suitcase when you get into the country?

In your suitcase is fine, but once you are in OZ, the carry must be discreet...
Try not to use when strangers are around, as they will see it as a weapon.
If you travel from one state to another, it might be confiscated as you cross the border line....good luck!!!

G'day Piet.S

As Zackerty said, discreet carry is best.

It depends also on which state your wife will visit as all states have different laws. Basically though you can only carry a knife if you have a valid reason (such as food prep, work related reasons, religious reasons etc. Self defence is specifically stated as not being a valid reason.)

That blows. I love these stupid knife laws everywhere. Pretty soon everyone will carry sharp sticks, then they'll make those illegal. I still can't get over the negative attitude towards knives worldwide, what is going on?

The law in NSW states that you cannot carry any knife in a public place or a school without a valid excuse. However, I have carried a knife every day since the law was introduced, often with the clip showing, without any problems. I do carry something smaller like a Kopa or Kiwi if I'm in the city and I'm careful where I use it. The law is used to challenge gangs and hoods hanging around in known trouble spots. I'm 61 with a grey beard and don't go out much at night anymore :) so I don't think I'm much of a threat to public safety :D.

to the best of my knowledge, the other responses above are correct, you must have a good reason for carrying a knife and self defence is not a good reason,
normally SAKs and Multitools are overlooked Here in western australia, although i normally carry an endura or pacific salt, a cricket or dragonfly, a swisstool and a ladybug or jester.
i havent yet been questioned about any of my knives, however i elect to not use them in public areas

I must say that finding this out about Australia is kind of disappointing. I figured if there was anywhere else in the world that would be with us on supporting knife carry, it would be the Aussies. How strange.
