View Full Version : Serious use for my Rookie or not?

Greetings you all :)

Just for the sake of variety, I'm planning to take my linerless G10 Rookie/SE to work with me next monday.

I really like the knife and I am curious if it is usable for some serious tasks(other than the occasional thread or envelope) as well.

The knife will be mainly cutting plastic film(polyethylene) an occasional tie rip, some small spounges and some light card board. Absolutely no prying or scraping is involved (that's what my boxcutter is for :D )

The knife has absolutely no play in either direction at the moment and is scary sharp.

I wasn't very lucky with my Standard at this kind of work  , so I wonder if it is wise to do this to my Rookie since I suppose they were produced in about the same period(??? :o )

I'm curious as well if the clip will hold as the knife will be clipped to my working jeans pockets.

Could any of you give me any advice on this?

Many thanks in advance

I would be carefull with it. I think a linerless Rookie is kinda rare. If your's is still mint, I wouldn't use it.

My brother-in-law broke the tip of his PE Rookie recently, so be carefull how you apply force to the tip. I reground his tip and he now has sort of a drop-point Rookie, which, looks pretty good actually ;)

I don't think the clip is a problem.
I have a linerless G-10 Police and carried it dailly for months.
No problems with the clip.
The blade did develop a bit of vertical play though.
Only light use.

You know I've a G-10 Rookie and a G-10 Standard. The Standard had blade play from the beginning, but the Rookie had none. So my collectors heart says: "Let the Rookie stay at home."

I just know I wouldn't although it is probably up to the task. I would pick an easier replaceable model.

I think it has been mentioned here numerous times that Spyderco switched to single liner construction on the G-10 models specifically to address complaints that threads for clip screws cut directly in the G-10 were stripping out. I would imagine the danger of that happening is somewhat dependent on the type of pants you wear, and how you carry the knife. Thinner material, and pocket carry would put less tension on the clip than heavy material and IWB carry. In any case, it would make me hesitant to carry one clipped, or reccommend anyone else do so.

Thanks very much you guys

I think I'll stay with my E3 or D3 then and keep the Rookie for "off duty" carry ;)

Hard to beat a Delica in daily use.

This thread makes me cry to consider daily work use of the fragile rarity.
