View Full Version : Short blade in waved Delica
Got my waved Delica yesterday. Fun fun fun to play with it. :D
One thing I noticed is that the blade looks a bit short. I don't have a normal Delica 4 to compare it, but there's still room in the handle for at least 4mm more... Anyone know how much space there's left in a normal Delica 4?
Ted
Ted, I just measured my D4 and from where the blade comes out of the handle to the tip of the blade it's 73 mm. The handle of the D4 also seems a little bit too large for the blade. Your estimate with 4 mm could be right.

I noticed that too, but I think it's an optical illusion. The wave makes the Delica blade look very short. The Endura waved looks like its blade is less than 4" as well, it's interesting.

Well, wouldn't say it's an optical illusion. There's 4mm space left for the blade in the handle and I was curious if the waved Delica has a shorter blade then the normal Delica. Judging from Rob's post, it appears they are the same length.

Ted, if you dont like it as it is, I can still PM you my snail addy :D :p ;)
Enjoy it!
I think they're the same length, although mine are at home and I'm at the office. I will try to remember to measure them tonight, but here is a photo of the D4 and WD4 together ...

My D4 had the same amout of room in the handle.I think they made the blade on the new ones shorter.
Wish it was a 3 1/8 in blade

I put them up against one another, edge to edge. They both have the same edge length. :)

According to the specs in the online catalog, the blade on the Delica Wave is 1/32" longer than the "regular" Delica. The Endura Wave blade 1/16" longer.

They must have measured the waved ones too close to the heat treat oven... :p

Ted, I concur with VictorLouis.
I don't have a standard Gen 4 Delica, but the blades on my Waved and ZDP-189 versions are both the same length. So, unless they're both shorter than the standard VG-10 blade, the extra space you see is normal.
Paul, I got a D4 in the mail for a friend yesterday, and it's the same length as the Waved one. So, it looks like it's all 'by design'. :D

So, it looks like it's all 'by design'. :DWell Ted, one reason may be that somewhere in the future, other blade styles may share the D4 handle, just as the Merlin, Salt I, and Tasman Salt shared that of the D3, and one of them may need that extra little bit of handle room. Or, it may just be a case that they detmined this was the minimum length at which the new handle would feel right in the hand.
Hi Ted,
The Delica blade length was kept at 3" long due to many requests from many wanting to meet local local legal restrictions which often are 3" blade.
The handle, was designed for ergos, control, saftey and comfort so it is a tad longer than the blade length might indicate.
Putting "as much blade in a handle as is possible" is not always the best solution, IMO. There are quite a few designs out there with smaller blades (and shorter handles) that, for me, offer handles that are far to short and not ergonomic enough for safety and control, IMO.
