View Full Version : OCD, Insomnia and PetSmart...
Hannibal Lecter

Dear Friends,
My Lady, like myself, is an obsessive-compulsive disorder sufferer. Of late she has been experiencing unusual levels of sleeplessness due to, of all things, a television commercial. The commercial in question is the PetSmart commercial featuring Maggie, the Great Dane, and a little girl eating an ice cream cone. It is the song used in the commercial that is the source of my Lady's irritation. She is trying to find out who recorded the song, if it was merely a jingle recorded solely for the commercial, and if it is in fact a complete song where to obtain a copy of it.
This has been consuming her with greater ferocity over the past several weeks, finally culminating in her request to me tonight to thread here about it in the hopes that a member of my Spyder family will have an answer.
I have sent a couple of e-mails to PetSmart (most assuredly NOT using my Hannibal Lecter pseudonym ;) ) but have yet to receive a reply.
Any ideas?

:spyder: My dear Doctor,
Rather than wasting energy on the jingle that really doesn't matter I reccomend mindfulness and continuously bringing one's awareness back to the breath, without self rebuke. Reforming our mental habit energy more than the sating the obsession of the day that's driving us mad is the real goal. Awareness of the breath and the constant (because we're always losing it!) mindful practice of letting go is the only thing that really works in the long term. At least, it's the only thing that worked for me.
The great thing about breath awareness practice is that as long as we're not dead the breath is always right there under our nose, waiting for us to return to the here and now. Hang in there. :) :spyder:

:spyder: Also, I haven't seen the commercial :o :spyder:
Doc, I also suffer from OCD. I know the living hell that it can be at times, and I certainly sympathyze with your lady. I will say a prayer for you both, that you receive peace.
Re. dealing mentally with it: a bit of technique that works with me sometimes is that I talk myself into letting go whatever I'm obsessing about. Sometimes I mentally have to scream at myself (silently), "IT DOESN'T MATTER, YOU IDIOT! IT'S NOT IMPORTANT, SO FORGET ABOUT IT!!!!" I actually call myself an idiot, yes.
I know there's so much more to it than that, and I'm sure you've tried a myriad of techniques, but maybe that'll help a bit.

Hey Doc, does the jingle in question have any lyrics at all? If so, plug a line of them into google, and nine times out of ten you'll get directed to a site which provides the artist and name of the song.
Of course, if it has no lyrics...well...than you've got a problem.
Haven't seen the commercial though, so I won't be of much help. :p

I agree, I love to sit in a remote part of nature, watch the wind stir the trees and breath, a calmness....

Dear Doctor,
Needless to say I didn't see the commercial so I can't be of any use. :( Helas, life is too short to spend it in front of the TV (that's why they made computers for  ) But I was wondering what in God's sake is an OCD?

Wow, that's the first time I've ever come up empty. The only thing I was able to come up with a post on a random message board of someone else asking if anyone knew the name of the song.
Sorry Doc, I'll keep trying.

OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Basically the sufferer focuses on some thought, object, or action and can not let it go. It is shown in many movies/shows...an example is a man who has to open and close a door seven times before he will walk through it. Or someone who has to check to make sure the oven is turned off twenty-three times before leaving for the day.

I agree completely; by and large I despise television. I do not think it inherently bad; just that I personally have better things to do with my time. :D
I generally consider the miniscule amount of time that I spend in front of the television an complete and utter waste. Let's face it: I always have at least one knife that needs the edge touched up...

Hannibal,
I spoke with someone in the Corporate Communications office for Petsmart. They will be calling me back with the answer. He believes he can get back to me today. As soon as he does, I'll post. :) He thinks it's great that so many of you are searching for this.

I guess I'm lucky as I haven't seen this commercial and hope I don't. If I have to obsess about something, I would rather it be trying to obtain a ZDP Delica :D
I am just curious but have you ever tried any cognitive of psychoanalytic techniques for OCD? They have helped me quite a lot...if an offocial DSM-IV Text Revision diagnosis is given (which it sounds like it absolutely would), insurance will pay for it.

Please pardon me whilst I drop from character for just a brief moment...
You Rock!
Ahem, I meant to say that I extend you my sincerest thanks for your sincere efforts, as well as my thanks to all here whose good wishes and information have been so helpful in this pursuit. :D
Our OCD rarely runs completely rampant, so I haven't pursued treatment options in recent years. I have tried some of what has been suggested here with wonderful results, especially meditation/quieting of the mind coupled with controlled breathing techniques.
My sincerest thanks to you all!

I used to think I suffered from this condition alone. Heck, I was embarrassed to even tell people I have it.
But the more I go through life, the more I see that many, many other people suffer from OCD. It's good to know I'm not alone.
The environment in which I work is especially brutal for those with this condition...I can see it in many, many of my coworkers. We're drilled to keep security in the forefront of our minds, and almost need to be obsessed with it (for obvious reasons). As a result, many of us become obsessed with security (did I lock the downstairs door? Gotta go check it). We bring it home with us.
Then again, working with society's lunatics/rapists/murderers sure does make one a bit paranoid about one's family's safety. I'm always making sure doors are locked in my house.

I can't tell you how many times I've done this. :o
This and a few other things are my weaknesses.
