In todays newspapers they wrote that 1,5 billion people will watch the game tonight.

It's going to be difficult to avoid soccer in general and the world cup in special for the next few weeks if you do not like soccer (like me  ).

I've heard on Austrian television that they are giong to broadcast every single game of the world cup live

That means no useful TV schedule for ages :( I am just happy that we didn't qualify. That would make it even worse over here, as soccer seems to be our national sport (although we most likely never win). One of our biggest brewerys actually ran out of empty bottles because there were already 4,5 million bottles of beer sold and no empty ones brought back so all machines had to be stopped untill they have enough bottles to fill again. The spokesman of the company said that this only happened once to them and that was in 1837.

Everybody seems to act a little bit crazy when events like that take place

Cheers, Rob

I wish good luck to any and all players on any and all losing teams, that their psychotic fans don't murder them.

I remember a Colombian goalie was killed because he let in the goal that caused his team to lose (this was a couple of years ago and I don't know if it was in a big tournament or not).

Why does violence and hooliganism follow soccer around so closely? Why do fans of the game so utterly and completely lose their minds over this?

Best referee I have seen so far. I can't remember the first yellow card for Pope but both the direct reds and the other yellow were completely justified. Still a shame the US didn't beat Italy though.

I'm not a huge soccer fan just because I find a lot of soccer players dive and over react to their injuries, but it was nice to see someone get injuried (not the nice part) busted open and all and actually walk off the field on his own. I wonder if the fact he was from the US had anything to do with it though...

I'm not knocking Europeans or anyone else.

Oh and the red card was totally the right call. That Italian player elbowed the American in the face.

oh WTF I am doing there is a hockey game on! lol

I don't trust a ref that has been found guilty of match corruption before. He was banned from the 2002 World Cup for a reason, I don't know why he was allowed back in 2006.

I am a bit cooled off now. I was frustrated with how the USA was ranked #5 by FIFA and we didn't play that well in our first match. Our second we played better, but didn't get the result. We're still in it, but we don't control out destiny.

I've got a very mixed bloodline, so I have a few other countries in my blood that I can root for :)

Red cards are very bad. In terms of hockey it is like a powerplay, but not for 2 min. it's a power play for the rest of the game. Your team has to play a man down, in addition the player is not allowed to play the next match, but the team gets a full strength side the next match.

Italy got 1 and the US got 1 I think.

But the US red card was actually 2 yellow cards I think...cause 2 yellow cards equal 1 red card.

*Cho* is correct. There are two types of cards, a yellow and a red. A yellow is a caution card, warning you that if you mess up again then you are ejected. Two yellows = red. A red card is given for a very dangerous play, or for stopping an imminent goal with your hands (if you're anyone but the goalie).

The picture is why Italy got their red card, busted open McBride pretty good.

Soccer allows the game to end in a draw. Both teams get 1 point in stead of 3 points for a win. If a decision has to be reached the game is extended for an additional 30 minutes overtime ( 2 x 15 minutes) and finally a penalty shoot out.

I take it that the two teams with the most points play for the championship?

I guess I could dig up some world cup rules or something, but it is much more enjoyable to discuss such things with folks from other lands...although a bit clumsy over the internet. :)

Gerard Breuker

Out of every group of 4 teams the best 2 go on, the other 2 go home.
The next rounds are knockout up to the final. Only the losers of the semifinal get to play for third place.

We're currently in the preliminaries. The tournament is divided into groups of four who play round robin. The two best teams of each group (best in terms of points: 3 for the winner of a game, 1 for a draw, zero to the loser - in case of a tie, the one with more goals advances) go on to the next stage, which is knockout all the way to the top.
Of course there are some fine points to all this, but that's the basic setup. :)

Regarding the much-discussed red cards: the sharper rules of this world cup state that attacks are to be immediately punished by red cards.

Personal note: I am not a soccer enthusiast, and I dislike the typical drunk, obnoxious fans. But as the event progresses I find myself drawn into the friendly party this is turning out to be. :)

Yeah, I've been pretty impressed with how smoothly things have gone. There have only been two problems so far that I've seen. The German and Polish fans has a bit of a tussle in the streets, but the police stopped that before it got too bad. Also some Nazis tried to stage a rally, little did they know that there were more counter protesters and that drove them off very quickly.

So far the cup has been very very entertaining and it should only get better once we hit the knock out rounds. :)

I actually thought the Netherlands - Portugal game was entertaining. It had many great scoring chances, with balls going wide or high (or off the bar! :( ). There were great passes and saves, as well as some rough play and some very silly pushing matches. (As an ice-hockey player and fan, it wasn't that bad really. I've done worse... I mean, I've seen worse! :o ). Sixteen yellow cards and four red cards - all in a 90 minute match!

Too bad the Netherlands lost, I like the Oranje. Portugal will be in tough with a couple of players not available because of the red cards. Will make for an interesting match vs. England.

Slvgx,

The diving is one of the things that I dont enjoy.I know it happens in every sport, but it seems more part of the game in soccer. It was interesting to hear the announcers commenting about the abundance of cameras now making it "tough to get away with anything anymore(diving)".That said,I am a fan of sports in general and am awaiting Saturdays final.Have fun watching gang.

They made it far enough to keep the excitement going but it is probably good that they didn't get to the final. Not to mention the calls that they had an unfair advantage because they hosted the games what would be sure to follow. I'd rather see them do honor to their country as a good host than as world champions.
